Applicants should have a Ph.D. in a Social Science discipline with a proven track record of effective teaching and research in any area of the social sciences, broadly defined. The Department of Geography, University at Buffalo, The State University of New York seeks a tenure-track faculty colleague (open rank) in Health Geography focusing on health inequities resulting from the uneven geographies of development and environmental change.
Rapid environmental change and degradation present challenges for human health in all regions of the world. Within regions the resilience of populations at the national, community, and household scales vary considerably. The interaction of increased risk and concentrated vulnerability exacerbates the disparities in health outcomes. This results in complex patterns of population health measured broadly, including infectious disease transmission, chronic disease incidence, and mental health disorders. We welcome applicants whose specialties are related to any aspect of human health and geography. The focus of the research, however, should be on the relationships between patterns of inequity, the relevant systemic drivers of disparity, and the key causal pathways across spatial scales.
This hire will be one of two new faculty members who are focused on the interactions between climate, health, and development. The successful candidates will have a strong interest in using disciplinary strengths to think across disciplinary boundaries and will be expected to contribute to the Department’s PhD program. The Department of Geography and Spatial Sciences (GSS) at the University of Delaware, Newark, DE, invites applications for a Teaching Assistant Professor faculty position (non-tenured, continuing-track with a clearly delineated path to promotion), with an anticipated start date of August 2023. The Department is looking for exceptional individuals with a demonstrated experience in and passion for teaching environmental studies who: a) are scholars in any fields related to environment, including but not limited to, global/regional environmental change, human dimensions of environmental change, human geography, political ecology or environmental social sciences, b) are interested in undergraduate teaching and mentoring, and c) demonstrate a commitment to incorporating innovative evidence-based pedagogical methods into undergraduate classrooms and courses.
GSS offers six undergraduate majors, four graduate degree programs, and several minors and certificates. This position would primarily support teaching in the Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science, and the Bachelor of Arts degrees in Environmental Studies and Geography. Responsibilities will include teaching and teaching-related tasks for lower and upper division undergraduate courses; mentorship of undergraduates; continued professional development and scholarship, particularly relating to instruction and pedagogy; and participation in university service. The anticipated workload is 6 3-credit courses a year, with 3-4 courses supporting shared requirements in the Environmental Science and Studies majors such as introduction to the environment course and capstone, and one additional lower division and one to two upper division classes related to the instructor’s topical area of expertise. Examples of lower division courses are Topics in Human-Environment, Human Geography, Conservation of Natural Resources and Introduction to Cultural Geography. Examples of upper division courses include Environmental and Society, Urban Geography, People, Politics and Place, and Water and Society.
Applicants must have already obtained a PhD degree in environmental studies or a closely related field. Prior teaching experience as the instructor of record is required by the time of application. Preferred qualifications include a demonstrated ability to mentor undergraduates, experience with evidence-based teaching methodologies and best practices, and participation in program development and assessment. Successful candidates will have a record of teaching excellence, and will be able to contribute to the improvement of the undergraduate experience in GSS. Scenario Planning Postdoctoral Fellow
JOB PURPOSE:
This postdoc will work on an NSF EPSCoR-funded project called WY-ACT (Wyoming Anticipating Climate Transitions) project. This project seeks to help Wyoming stakeholders and communities anticipate and prepare for changing water availability. The 5-year grant will support the creation of integrative models showing the cascading effects of changed water availability through socio-environmental systems with implications for hydrology, ecology, economics, and dependent human communities. Core responsibilities will include co-designing scenario workshops with knowledge of current scenario planning methods, coordinating logistics for workshops in the three-basin region in northwest Wyoming, conducting interviews and focus groups, and overseeing qualitative and quantitative research. Salary will be competitive and includes a generous benefits package and support for travel. The appointment is for two years, renewable for further years subject to satisfactory performance. The position will be supervised by Dr. Corrine Noel Knapp and Dr. Mary L. Keller.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This post-doc will be responsible for conducting pre-workshop interviews and focus groups, co-designing scenario workshops with knowledge of current scenario planning methods, coordinating logistics for workshops in the three-basin region in northwest Wyoming, and overseeing qualitative and quantitative research during and after workshops. Job Description Summary
Wake Forest University’s Environment and Sustainability Studies Program seeks an engaged, creative, and committed teacher-scholar to become a Visiting Assistant Professor in Socio-environmental Geographic Information Systems/Sciences (GIS). We welcome candidates with a Ph.D. in geography, environmental studies, anthropology, environmental engineering, conservation biology, environmental sciences, natural resource management, forestry, or other fields where the candidate has pursued research and/or teaching on environmental justice, with connections to environmental justice, equity, communities, or sustainable development. This is a one-year, non-tenure track position. The Visiting Assistant Professor will teach three courses per semester or the equivalent. Compelling applicants will have a commitment to interdisciplinary, experiential, and place-based learning and a record of teaching and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds. We welcome applicants who are familiar with participatory GIS, public participation GIS, or community GIS, and have demonstrated experience teaching socio-environmental GIS, using global positioning systems and drone technologies, teaching with commercial and freeware GIS software, and public scholarship with digital storytelling. We seek scholars who share our dedication to cultivating a positive, inclusive culture of belonging among faculty, staff, and students, including international and first-generation students and those who identify as members of historically marginalized communities.

The successful candidate will join an innovative and interdisciplinary group of scholars from the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences who address the environment and sustainability. The goal of the Environment and Sustainability Studies Program is to prepare students to create just and sustainable futures. We teach students how to think across disciplinary boundaries to address environmental challenges and to act within their communities for environmental justice. Our program leverages the applied and experiential learning of liberal arts education and strengthens it through our vibrant professional schools. We ready students to be bold and ethical leaders who respond to environmental issues using socio-environmental synthesis for evidence-based, creative, and principled action.
We recognize that making positive environmental change means creating and sustaining partnerships and collaborations, and we are looking for candidates who strengthen and broaden our commitments to just environmental futures by innovating spaces where students learn both the theory and practice of collaborative and inclusive environmental problem-solving. We seek candidates with a vision for experiential learning and knowledge co-production in the campus, Winston Salem, and/or global communities. This encompasses the many resources of the Piedmont area, including local and regional organizations and government agencies, as well as the campus gardens, forests, maker space, and global education programs.
