The Department of Geography and Planning seeks applications for a tenure-track faculty position in human geography at the assistant professor level with an expected start date of July 1, 2015. We encourage human geographers from any area of expertise to apply. We especially encourage applicants with expertise in health, well-being, international specialties, and sustainability. Applicants should be able to provide evidence of excellence in teaching, as well as a demonstrated commitment to research and the pursuit of external funding. The successful candidate will teach courses in World Regional Geography, Human Geography, upper division regional geography courses, and Qualitative Methods. In addition, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop courses in his or her own specialty areas, including courses in our graduate program.

We are seeking candidates with a broad training in Urban Geography/ Planning & Policy with teaching or research experience in GIS applications. Expertise in one or more of the following areas will be highly desired and befitting our strategic growth over the next five years: sustainable urban development, urban planning/policy, transportation, quantitative analysis and GIS applications. The successful candidate should be able to expand our course offerings in urban environment, planning, and development policies. Candidates with experience or an interest in teaching the general education course in Human Geography, research methods courses for majors, upper division courses of Urban Transportation, Transportation Geography, GIS Applications in Political Sciences, and GIS Applications in Urban Planning, as well as a graduate level seminar course on Geographic Thought will be given preference. Additionally, candidates with an interest in doing community-based research and developing civic/service learning courses are highly desirable.

Colgate University (NY), Asst Prof of Peace & Conflict and Geography (Oct 1)[]

Colgate University’s Peace and Conflict Studies Program (P- Con) and Department of Geography invite applications for a jointly appointed tenure-track assistant professorship in Peace and Conflict Studies and Geography, with a focus on environmental security, to begin Fall 2015. Completion of Ph.D. is expected prior to or shortly after the date of hire. We seek a scholar who focuses on extractive violence and conflict in the context of issues such as global ecological destruction, resource scarcity, and climate change. Preference will be given to candidates whose scholarship is grounded in field research, or to those well situated in comparative or systemic theoretical analysis of the environment/extraction/security nexus. We especially desire to hire a scholar able to employ and teach diverse methodologies for the study of extractive conflict. The successful candidate will provide new intellectual connection points between Geography and P-Con, helping to bridge the methodological and theoretical interests of these two dynamic faculties around environmental security.

Hofstra University, Assistant Professor of Geography (Dec 2014)[]

The Department of Global Studies & Geography at Hofstra University invites applications from broadly trained human geographers with expertise in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for an anticipated tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning in Fall 2015. Ideally the candidate will have expertise in the use of spatial data and methods to analyze comparative public policy problems such as those related to health, demography, migration, urbanization, economic development, transportation and logistics. The candidate will create a new graduate program in GIS and develop new courses at both the graduate and undergraduate level. We expect the candidate to foster collaborative linkages with faculty and students in other schools, such as Engineering, Health Sciences and Medicine. The candidate should also involve students in research projects, fieldwork, and data analysis, and mentor students for careers in the GIS profession. They are also expected to advise students, serve on committees, participate in professional conferences, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and seek external grants. The normal teaching load at Hofstra is 3 classes per semester. The Department currently has around 200 UG majors and minors. Evidence is required of a commitment to excellence in teaching and scholarship. It is expected that the candidate will have a PhD in geography or related discipline by the time of appointment. King's College London (UK), Department of Geography, Senior Lecturer in Systemic Risk and Resilience, (Dec 8)[]

In keeping with the aim of the Department of Geography to enhance its position as one of the top ten departments in the country, we seek to appoint a Senior Lecturer with expertise in systemic risk and resilience examining the movement of risk and loss between bio-physical, economic, political and social domains, and how society might improve anticipatory or responsive management of such systemic risks. The post is a strategic investment in the development of transdisciplinary research in these fields, and the successful applicant will collaborate with the King’s Centre for Integrated Research on Risk and Resilience. Close collaboration is also expected with the Hazards and Risk Research Group and its associated King’s Centre for Risk Management, to build on the departments research strength in climate, society and culture. Applicants should have an established record spanning research and teaching, and will also contribute to senior leadership and administration within the Department.

Lancaster University (UK), Lectureship in Governance of the Subsurface - Human Geography (Sept. 30)[]

The Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC) together with the British Geological Survey (BGS) is advertising a Lectureship in Governance of the Subsurface with a closing date of 30 September 2014. Preference for someone who understands law and legal geography in the area of energy, oil and gas, water, mineral or property. A UK Lectureship is generally equal to an Assistant Professor in the US system.

Mary Washington University, Visiting Assistant Professor of Urban Geography (March 6th)[]

The Department of Geography seeks an urban geographer with the ability to teach introductory urban geography, an advanced class in urban-environment relationships, introduction to human geography, as well as a class on race to fill a 9-month position at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor beginning in August 2015.  The successful candidate must demonstrate excellence in teaching. Michigan State University, Asst/Assoc Prof of Economic Geography (Dec 15th)[]

The Department of Geography (geo.msu.edu) at Michigan State University invites applications for a full-time, academic-year (nine-month) tenure-system Assistant or Associate Professor to begin in Fall of 2015.  We seek an outstanding Economic Geographer whose primary research and teaching interests are in applied and theoretical aspects of the field (for example but not limited to, market analysis, transportation, entrepreneurship, or economic development). Mellon Visiting Assistant Professorship in Comparative Border Studies - University of California, Davis(Feb 6)[]

The UC Davis Graduate Group in Cultural Studies is pleased to announce a two-year Visiting Assistant Professorship for 2015-2017 in Comparative Border Studies supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Applicants should be specialists in research on one or more border zones, such as: US-Mexico, Israel-Palestine, Afghanistan-Pakistan, North- South Korea, East-West Germany, North Africa-Europe, etc. We are interested in promoting comparative and transnational research so these perspectives are preferred, but not required. The specific field is open, but interdisciplinary orientation in humanities and qualitative social sciences is preferred.Our new three-year Mellon Research Initiative in Comparative Border Studies focuses on the making, unmaking, crossing, and fortification of borders—national, regional, colonial--and aims to rethink notions of border crossing as well as containment within different regional studies contexts as a result of transregional, comparative dialogue. The initiative is organized around three major themes: 1) human rights, citizenship and racialized belonging; 2)mobility, militarization and containment; 3) protest cultures and transnational solidarities. Research interest in one or more of these areas is preferred. We will consider junior scholars including recent PhDs and ABDs (the degree must be completed by July 1, 2015). The Mellon Visiting Assistant Professor will receive an annual stipend of $55,000, plus health benefits, research funding, and relocation funds.
