Georgetown University - TT Line Asst Prof in the Culture and Politics Program - Human Rights / Humanitarianism
The Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University invites applications for a new tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor with a focus on culture and politics. The position will start in Fall 2019. We seek candidates with research expertise in human rights and/or humanitarianism who have a demonstrated interdisciplinary background in cultural/social theory as it relates to global politics. Regional specialization and disciplinary field are open, but an international component is required. We encourage candidates who draw from multiple disciplinary and methodological approaches.
Applicants should have exceptional scholarly promise and substantial research accomplishments. The appointment is attached to the Culture and Politics (CULP) undergraduate major within the School of Foreign Service (SFS). CULP is a large interdisciplinary undergraduate program that emphasizes critical social inquiry within a transnational/global context, interrelating questions of power structures and identity.
The search committee will evaluate applicant teaching records and potential for excellence both in the classroom and in the related areas of course design, curricular development, and student mentoring. Preference will be given to applicants with teaching experience who have completed their Ph.D. The teaching load is two courses per semester, which includes the CULP major’s undergraduate Gateway course “Theorizing Culture and Politics.” The SFS offers a rigorous four-year undergraduate program in international studies, as well as several master’s degrees in area studies, security studies, global human development, and international affairs. Opportunities for interdisciplinary dialogue on human rights and humanitarianism span the university and bridge scholarly and practitioner arenas, such as the Institute for the Study of International Migration, Global Human Development Program, SFS area studies programs, and Institute for Racial Justice.

The University Honors College seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Urban Social Science beginning Fall 2019. Candidates with degrees in the fields of sociocultural anthropology and human geography will be considered; a Ph.D. in one of these fields must be completed by August 30, 2019. The position is open in regards to subfield specialization, although we are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in ethnic, gender, queer, or information studies.
This position is teaching intensive with a primary emphasis on disciplinary methodologies and writing instruction but we also expect candidates to have a strong scholarly agenda. The successful candidate will have an approach to teaching that includes close textual analysis, writing, and disciplinary methods. The Department of Geography, the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University seeks to hire a human geographer with interests in community geography and participatory geographies at the rank of assistant professor. We seek a human geographer whose research and teaching focus on some combination of the following areas: community geography, participatory (action) research, participatory mapping or participatory GIS, and/or community-based scholarship focused on social change. We expect to hire a scholar poised to make a significant theoretical contribution to key subfields in critical human geography, but whose work is also empirically rooted, preferably in the Global South. A tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor is available in the Department of Geography and Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences. We seek a human or nature-society geographer with expertise in social and/or environmental justice informed by contemporary critical perspectives and the ability to integrate their work with geospatial techniques. Areas of scholarly specialization might include: transnational, intersectional feminist, or post-colonial geographies; indigenous resource management or ecological knowledge; development and planning; medical geography or public health; race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality; or other sub-specialty that addresses spatial disparities and advances social equity. The candidate must be committed to teaching excellence, actively engaging undergraduates, and mentoring students from groups underrepresented in geography. The candidate will join a vibrant and well-supported geography department with a dynamic and integrated human/physical/geospatial curriculum. DEPARTMENT : The Department of Geography and Anthropology consists of 13 full-time and 1 part-time academic staff and one geospatial technology facilitator. The department has about 140 geography majors and its courses serve students from across the university. The Department of Geography at Memorial University invites applications for a Senior Research and Teaching Fellow in Resource sustainability and coastal community development (regular term position, 3 years, non-renewable, Assistant Professor rank), subject to budgetary approval. It is intended for senior post-doctoral candidates interested in developing a teaching portfolio and research experience on topics related to economic and resource geography, coastal and ocean sustainability, fisheries governance, and community development. The position will be based at the Department of Geography in St John’s. The appointment is for three years, non-renewable, beginning on July 1, 2019 and will involve both teaching (limited load) and research.
The position is funded through the Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI; oceanfrontierinstitute.com), a collaborative research initiative between Dalhousie University, Memorial University of Newfoundland, and the University of Prince Edward Island, working in partnership with federal and provincial government agencies, private sectors and international partners to understand our changing ocean and create safe, sustainable solutions for development. The successful applicant will contribute to two OFI research modules based in the Department of Geography at Memorial University in St John’s. OFI Module I - 'Informing Governance Responses in a Changing Ocean' and Module M – ‘Social License and Planning in Coastal Communities’ are the two social science-focused research modules led by Ratana Chuenpagdee and Charles Mather, respectively. Module I aims to examine issues related to the short- and long-term impacts and consequences of social, ecological and institutional changes for the future of fisheries, coastal communities and the economy in Newfoundland and Labrador. Module M is a research module that critically assesses social licence and social acceptability of aquaculture in Atlantic Canada. Together, research in the two modules is concerned with improving the governance of fisheries and aquaculture for sustainable ocean and community development in Newfoundland and Labrador, Atlantic Canada and beyond.

- Princeton University is pleased to announce the call for applications to the Fung Global Fellows Program at the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS). Each year the program selects six scholars from around the world to be in residence at Princeton for an academic year and to engage in research and discussion around a common theme. Candidates will be considered in three categories: (1) Four of the fellowships will be awarded to early-career scholars employed in the equivalent of tenure-track positions who are expected to return to their position. (2) One fellowship is set aside for a postdoctoral research associate who at the time of application does not have a tenure-track faculty appointment. (3) In addition, one fellowship will be awarded to a senior scholar. All candidates must be based outside the United States.
- During the academic year 2019-20, the Fung Global Fellows Program theme will be “Thinking Globally.” How people have thought about the planet has informed the institutions, norms, and policies that have pulled it together and torn it apart. For centuries, ideas of free trade, human rights or global governance have framed cooperation and competition, order and disorder. Such ideas have also spawned border-crossing movements, from campaigns to end slavery to commitments to reduce carbon emissions. In turn, global thinking and action have often reinforced commitments to national ideas and efforts to curb global exchange. The goal of this research theme is to explore how ideas framed the understanding of interests and the making of institutions that have yielded commonness and conflict across and within borders. We also want to understand how these ideas and practices came into being through scientific networks, foundations, and think tanks. The Program will also examine rival world ideas that have challenged prevailing orthodoxies. Nowadays, with cooperative norms under challenge, global institutions under stress, and a century of guiding ideas about global convergence in doubt, we want to take a broad look at where these ideas came from, their effects, and the prospects for intellectual renewal or rethinking. The goal of the 2019-20 Fung Global Fellows cohort will be to explore the ways people learned to rely on or to reject strangers far away, as well as to imagine how global relationships came to be and could be different. We welcome applicants from all disciplinary and inter-disciplinary fields from the sciences to the humanities whose work addresses this set of themes in any historical period or world region.

The Program in American Culture Studies (AMCS) at Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in “Immigration, Cultures, and Law,” for the academic year 2019-2020 with the possibility of renewal for a second academic year, contingent upon satisfactory performance; duties starting in the Fall semester of 2019. AMCS is an endowed program in Arts & Sciences that fosters cross-disciplinary intellectual exchange and transformative scholarship at the intersections of the humanities and social sciences.
We are particularly interested in applicants, academics and/or practitioners, whose research, teaching, and practice (1) have a strong theoretical awareness, and deeply engage substantive empirical, ethnographic, and/or historical materials; (2) center on the richly-informed study of immigration in relation to America (broadly defined), especially as immigration issues intersect with cultural dynamics and legal issues; (3) speak to public debates about immigration, the law, identity, exclusion, citizenship, borders, and race/ethnicity.

Delta State University (Cleveland, MS) Assistant Professor of Geography and Social Science Education
The Division of Social Sciences and History at Delta State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Geography and Social Science Education position, to begin August, 2019. The successful candidate will teach 12 credit hours per semester, which includes teaching methods of teaching social studies/social sciences as well as introductory, advanced and graduate-level geography courses. S/he will be required to develop and deliver courses in a variety of modes, including online courses that ensure quality and effective assessment. Responsibilities will include serving as a liaison to the College of Education and Human Sciences (COEHS) in respect to accreditation and the supervision of teaching internships and field experiences. S/he will be required to serve on committees and support accreditation efforts as needed. Developing an active research agenda and engaging in service to the division, college, university and community, as well as advising students are other requirements. Teaching and advising may include students working towards the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies and the Master of Education in Secondary Education degrees. The candidate should have expertise in social studies/social science learning theories, practice, and pedagogy and a commitment to promoting diversity and equity. Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge and application of culturally responsive pedagogy. Traveling Faculty: International Honors Program (IHP) Food Systems: Agriculture, Sustainability, and Justice

The International Honors Program (IHP), a program of World Learning/SIT, offers international, comparative study abroad programs. We are currently seeking traveling faculty members to join an interdisciplinary team of faculty, fellows, and host country coordinators for IHP’s Food Systems: Agriculture, Sustainability, and Justice program in Fall 2019 and Spring 2020. Each four-month program will take approximately 30 students from top-tier U.S. colleges and universities to four countries to do inter-disciplinary study from a comparative perspective.
IHP Food Systems examines how the dynamics of food production, distribution, consumption, and provisioning are affected by population growth, capitalism, rapid urbanization, climate change, and globalization, and which responses offer the most promise for sustainable food futures at local, national, and global levels.
Students will analyze local, national, and global food systems—and the very direct impact of food on our daily lives—to develop a deeper understanding of one of the most significant challenges of our time. By examining the implications of technological advances, changing geo-political landscapes, international trade regimes, and climate change on food security, students work to identify strategies to support healthy communities, prosperous livelihoods and sustainable environments in a rapidly changing world. Field studies will include meetings with subsistence farmers, small-scale producers and multinational corporations, rural and urban communities, trade organizations and community-based NGOs, multi-lateral organizations, international agencies, leaders of social movements and human rights advocacy groups.
Specific Responsibilities: We are seeking traveling faculty members who will facilitate learning and teach two courses in either or both semesters: Politics, Ethics and Food Security (a Political science course) and Getting from Field to Fork (an Economics course).
