Discussion[]
- Two requests: Please do not delete any position that has been added. If a search has been cancelled, strike through it. Please also check before adding a new position to see whether it might already be in a different section. If you disagree with where the position has been placed, discuss the categorization in this section rather than simply duplicate it.
- Positions that are open rank = tenure track faculty + senior faculty. Should be listed in both. (Some things, studies have shown and experts agree, are more than one, not either / or ... )
- The purpose here isn't to deny that some jobs could reasonably be placed in multiple categories. It's just to make things easier once people start posting status updates.
- Idea: post it in both categories with request for people to post update status updates under tenure track.
- This is becoming needlessly complicated. Senior faculty positions are only for already tenured faculty whereas the tenure track positions are either expressly for or open to non-tenured applicants. Positions that are open rank or adv. asst. have in the past been listed in the first section.
- Q. (Ball SU) Does anyone know why their system asks applicants to upload their own LoRs? Am I to understand that they want non-confidential letters of recommendation?!
- This is most likely due to a miscommunication between the dept. and HR rather than a request for non-confidential letters.
- According to their search committee head, Ball State just implemented the job site this year and this was not something the department anticipated HR doing. They're in communication with HR right now about fixing it.
- HR has resolved the issue.
- The Naval Academy job is now listed on the USNA website.
- The Ball State German/Russian Instructor job is actually at the Indiana Academy of Science and the Humanities, a magnet school for advanced high school students. We can list it here, but it's not a college/university position.
- Anyone know anything about the U Chicago search? The interfolio link seems to be inactive. Was it cancelled?
- U of Chicago isn't actually using Interfolio for submissions; it's using a local job site. There seems to be a problem with the job site though too. I was able to access the Interfolio page advertising the position. I recommend contacting the job site's administrative email (ACOppAdministrator@uchicago.edu) and the department contact person, Ingrid Sagor (isagor@uchicago.edu), especially as letters of recommendation are instructed to be sent to her email.
- I am able to access the application site here . You should be able to find the listing by searching with the job posting number from the Interfolio page linked above (03483)
- Has anyone heard anything about the Oakland University Job? Have they contacted first-round interviewees?
- Oakland, anyone?
- Campus visits? Has Oakland sent those invitations out yet?
- Haven't heard anything yet. My guess is that several interviews were probably postponed to skype because of the weather in NYC, and thus it might take longer?
- Good point. I suppose that's the case for a lot of positions that had MLA interviews this year.
- Has anyone heard about USC Upstate?
- job site says Skype interviews to be conducted in January 2018. They will likely contact people after the holidays.
- Has anyone heard about Worcester Polytechnic Institute?
- I was told (after having a phone interview with them) to expect to hear from no later than the end January.
- U of Cincinnati posting: Has anybody figured out how to get into the actual online application? I can set up a profile but the link they give for the actual position kicks me back to the jobs home page. >>> solved: turn off adblocker and/or use Safari.
- Follow-up question: has anyone heard anything about their TT position in film and culture yet (first hand, second hand) that wasn't the auto-generated email from HR notifying applicants that their applications were under review?
- Nope, just that. My suspicion is that this was a pro forma call for applications, but obviously I don't really know.
- Northern Michigan University: Did anyone else receive an e-mail that they had "not met the minimum qualifications? Thanks!
- Yes, I got the same email. (x3)
- Yes. WTF? (x3)
- Besides being untrue, it seems pretty cruel. Are they that desperate to pretend their inside candidate is the only possible good candidate?
- IDK if they're desperate, per se. The message looks like poorly thought, auto-generated text from HR. It just looks like they had a difficult time getting around the whole "let's make it look like a legitimate search to HR" thing. Sloppy on their part, really.
- Agreed. I sent a reply asking them if this was an error message, as I did meet the minimum qualfications. I know it is pointless, but I thought I would call out the unprofessionalism to their attention.
- "Please do not let this discourage you from applying to other positions for which you are qualified." - just WOW. I did not realize I applied for a senior faculty position at Harvard. My bad.
- U of Nebraska Lincoln: Just a fair warning, this position was made possible through a grant and is advertised as a 9-month position at $31,500. You can finally teach a graduate seminar while still earning a graduate student's salary.
- Sam Houston SU- So, is everyone expected to send non-confidential LoR for this position? I've attempted to get in touch with their department multiple times with zero response to my messages.
- Can't get a response on this, either...anyone??!
- Yep, sent in the same e-mail. No response.
- Ok, the chair's secretary got back to me and said, "They can be confidential letters. If you would like to email them, please just include a word document for each recommendation in your application that they will be sent directly to the department. All letters are kept in my office confidentially and shared only with the search committee." The chair's secretary is April Darby and it's her email that's used as the contact email in the advertisement.

- Does anyone know how long the anticipated VAP position for the College of Charleston is for? It doesn’t specify in the job ad.
- One year, I believe. They said in the interview they hope/plan to do a tenure-track search next year.
- Does anyone have news on the status of the High Point or University of Iowa jobs?
- Don't know. Also had good interviews with them last month, but crickets since.
- Has anyone heard anything from Wabash?
- Friend of a friend says they had mid-March Skypes and are inviting people to campus now one-by-one.
- Is there any news from Pacific University? Thanks!
- I got an invitation for a Skype interview late yesterday 4/16
- Could someone explain why links to sites where job hiring announcements are made are repeatedly being reversed? It appears that Inma99 is responsible for this. It seems to me that if the announcement of a hire is made on a graduate school's website, it is perfectly acceptable for that information to be posted next to the job listing. Moreover, it has been standard practice in previous years.
- Yes, please do not delete that information.
- Dear Inma99: please stop reversing this update. This is an act of vandalism to a communally-constructed Wiki. To any moderator: is there a way to prevent Inma99’s repeated deletion of information?
20. Metoo alert. Chair in Foreign Languages at Kennessaw State has multiple sexual harrassment allegations made against him at previous jobs, particulary against young female faculty. That would be something good to know going into the job.
