Discussion[]

  1. Shouldn't Wofford job be listed under Multi-Language positions? The ad clearly states that the candidate will have to teach German and Arabic or French.
    • Change Made.
    • The original listing now clearly lists the position's secondary requirements
  2. Open rank searches are traditionally listed with the other tenure track positions and not with senior searches. Please check to see if a position is already listed in one of the categories before you add the position.
  3. Is the College of Charleston job a VAP or tenure-track? The word "visiting" is in the posting, but the title is just assistant professor, and the application material, if I'm not mistaken, is much more comprehensive than for the VAP listing they had last year...
    • Received confirmation from the search committee chair that C of Charleston's search is for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of German, 10/26
    • Search Committee confirmed that applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis starting tomorrow (12/8) and confirmed Interfolio page for CofC job will remain open into the start of the new year.
    • Communicated with the Chair at C of Charleston about replacing the requested teaching demo with something else. Here's the response: "Although our preference is for a teaching video, the committee does not want to preclude anyone from applying and is happy to accept a portfolio of course evaluations from students and observations from colleagues in lieu of a video." 12/7
  4. Re: Furman U: Per insider information, anyone who is willing and able to contribute to the university's linguistics program is encouraged to apply, this includes German Studies candidates.
    • Applicants are encouraged to contact the Chair of the search, Linda Bartlett (linda.bartlett@furman.edu), to confirm all of their materials were successfully submitted. Furman recently switched to a new computer administration system
    • Due to some technical issues with the aforementioned computer system, the application due date has been extended to November 8.
  5. Metoo alert on Kennesaw State job. Chair of language department has history of sexual harassment/assault attempts at previous positions.
    • Bless you for this (x5)
    • Read comment #7 by user "grand forks": https://www.chronicle.com/blogs/ticker/tenure-appeal-at-u-of-north-dakota-puts-spotlight-on-collegiality/67855
    • Comment refers to this part of the report: "Rice, who met with Mosher and reviewed documents in her case at her request, said a sexual harassment claim Mosher made against a former colleague apparently had "tainted" her reviews, noting that one faculty member had said she voted against Mosher because she didn't want to be called as a witness in a possible legal action. That former colleague, no longer at the university, appeared to give undue weight to some criticisms of Mosher's behavior toward students "in retaliation for his spurned romantic advances," Askim-Lovseth, the former mentor, testified."
    • What are tenured faculty and search committee members doing to protect applicants?
    • I deleted a response that contributes to rape culture on college campuses.
    • I deleted another response that contributes to rape culture on college campuses.
    • I sincerely hope the person(s) who keep writing those unwarranted remarks on this discussion board find a new hobby. This is a space for information and transparency. They should learn to keep on scrolling.
  6. RE: The Longwood lecturer job-- I just corresponded with one of the German faculty members and got more specific details on the position beyond those in the ad. I was told to spread the word to other applicants that both faculty members are happy to answer any questions about the position directly.
  7. Wait, so did Lawrence send out MLA invites or not? Receiving mixed signals here...
    • They did. Not sure why it was deleted. I restored it.
  8. The UCLA search has 500 applicants.
    • So you're saying there's a chance (x2)
    • ^ Bless you for the much-needed LOLz today!
    • Apologies for posting 2nd hand info about interviews being held; my information turned out to be false, so I deleted it.
    • candinates accepted their offers (source: departmental email)
  9. Do we know what is going on with the Emory University search?  It seems pretty quiet on that front...
    • I have heard from a reliable source that there is likely an internal candidate, just FYI.
    • I see - that makes sense since there have been absolutely no changes since the job was advertised.  Thank you so much for posting the update!
    • Keep in mind too that there are probably several people on the market lurking without otherwise contributing to this site as well and I imagine the university will still have to go through the hopes of preliminary interviews, etc.
    • Very true...never boring, I guess.
  10. Re: the German-Jewish position at UNC Chapel Hill: Some interviewees thought they were told that they would hear about progressing to on-campus visits by 12/14. But the Wiki hasn't been updated to indicate that anyone has been told. Do any readers know if invites have been sent out? And thanks so much for maintaining this page!
  11. Deleted repeated entry for Northeastern University position.
  12. Re: Rejection letters from Duke: are they post initial interview or not?
    • I received one without having had an interview.
    • Did campus interview invitations go out when rejections were sent out?
    • Did the Duke search fail?
  13. Re: the post-1945 position at Rutgers: have any readers heard back after their MLA interview? The wiki has not been updated to reflect that campus interview invites have gone out but it seems late to hear. Any second-hand info is also welcome!
  14. Congrats to the candidate who accepted the position at Wofford C! (x2!!)
  15. I moved the Iowa State lecturer job because the posting says it's renewable
  16. Why did someone delete all of that information regarding offers and campus visits from the TT postings? What the heck?
    • Not just TT, but like EVERY category! WTF 128.138.65.123 !??!!! This isn't only about you!
    • I've restored it as best I can. I think I got everything!
    • Someone deleted a bunch of stuff again--I just undid that. Not sure what the deal is...
  17. I removed the Wellesley position from the fixed-term listing because it was already (and correctly) listed as a renewable position on this wiki.
  18. OH recently, campus visit between faculty interviewer and candidate in Comp. Sci: Faculty "Wow, you sure have a busy schedule, how many campus interviews would you say you have?" - Candidate "hmm, I'm not sure, I lost track... 18?" - me *stifles scream/mad laughter* #notinmyfield #bebravefriends
  19. I would like to request we either stop posting part-time/ adjunct positions on this site or create a separate category for them. I'm not sure why people have decided this year to include them, but I'm inclined to remove them at the moment.
    • 1. why would you stop posting them and make it harder for people to find the jobs.
      2. we have always posted the jobs to this list, but we have had them in various places on the page
      3. don't we already have a place for them? "Visiting/non-tenure track/term limited faculty positions." We split these jobs off from the renewable non-tt positions a few years ago.
    • Well, ok, so I've been on the academic job market/ monitoring this wiki since Jan. 2016 and this is the first year in that time where positions that were part-time/ non benefits-eligible have been posted within the wiki (I was under the impression there was an unwritten rule where the jobs on here were exclusively full-time and benefits eligible). I am not, as you're suggesting, referring to one-year positions that are otherwise eligible for benefits and constitute as full-time, as defined by their respective institutions. But to your point of the wiki being a source of information, the primary sources for the job lists are given at the top of the wiki page (all those jobs sites we know and love) and there are many part-time, non benefits-eligible positions on those job sites, which people on this page are not posting. I am proposing to either remove those specific positions, or give them a separate heading indicating they're not full-time and/or not benefits-eligible. But that's also why I suggested it down here rather than deleting them arbitrarily.
    • I think it's important they are posted. I also think it's important that they're posted in their own category. I suggest: Part-time/Adjunct Positions
    • The category is now available
    • I'm on board with this, but why are the Iowa SU and U Wisonsin-Whitewater positions listed there? In the latter case, the ad specifically says it's full time, and the Iowa SU job is, as far as I can tell, just a normal lecturer job as well.
    • The UWW position lists the position as both part-time and full-time and Iowa SU only has a clear "part-time" listing. I've emailed the contact at UWW and ISU for clarification on the position and am fine having it moved back to the full-time heading if I have some confirmation. Otherwise, the job description seems for those positions seemed ambiguous to me. But if you think those positions definitely belong in the full-time category, I will happily yield to restoring them.
    • I'm fine with whatever the contacts say. I see you're right that the UWW says both full- and part-time. It also says it's a 5/4. So that better be full-time...
    • Pursuant to an email I received from ISU's contact, I've restored the position to the fixed-term category.
    • Pursuant to an email I received from UWW's contact, I've restored the position to the renewable category.
  20. Re: Emory VAP: CV and references due in one PDF to unknown recipient.
    • From a pdf copy of the announcement circulated on a listserve: "Candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, and the names of three references in one pdf document by May 1, 2019 to Prof. Peter Höyng, Chair, German Studies Department (phoeyng@emory.edu)."
    • Is the announcement posted anywhere?
    • I saw it on the WiG-List, but I don't know if it has been posted or advertized anywhere else.
    • The announcement is posted as a PDF file on the department's website (http://german.emory.edu/home/) under "news".
  21. I removed the scare quotes around "postdoc" for the GA Tech and Penn jobs. While I appreciate that both jobs have a higher teaching expectation than many postdocs, they are still postdocs, and in some sense far less disingenuously titled than the ubiquitous visiting asst prof. We all do need opportunities to call bullshit on the contemporary job market, but doing it in this way also belittles candidates who are interested in these positions, and who might be thrilled to get them.
    • well said.
  22. Re: Georgetown: Link not actually included. Please include a link or delete.
    • sorry! it should work now.
  23. Re: Tulane: Is there a contact person for the job?
    • There isn't. I'd assume it would be the department head though. There also isn't a deadline listed and the Interfolio advertisement for this position is inconsistent with the ad for this position I saw on HigherEdJobs when I posted it this morning
    • That's what I want to ask
    • Position moved to renewable-lectureship since time limit wasn't indicated.
    • Unpopular opinion: with the sloppily and hasty way this advertising was set up, it looks like a position for an inside candidate. With this said, I encourage anyone interested wholeheartedly to apply. I applied this morning, giving them the four (4) research statements and five (5) student evaluations they requested and even gave them a cover letter they didn't request in the additional materials.
    • Sorry, I didn't mean to delete others' comments, but for some reason they were already gone when I came in to add my two-cents to the post.
    • Seems very tailored to their current VAP...oh well applying anyway
    • I contacted the department chair and he thanked me for pointing out the inconsistency and suggested I go with the requirements that are posted on HigherEdJobs. Of course, you can't submit the application on Interfolio without all the required documents, so you do have to fill up the research statement with 4 documents some way.
  24. Re: Roanoke: I received an invitation to interview for this position yesterday. I indicated as much on the wiki yesterday, as did somebody else, who received a rejection letter from Auburn indicating that position had been filled. Why was this information deleted?
