Arizona State University School of International Letters and Cultures The School of International Letters and Cultures (SILC) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track assistant professor appointment in Environmental Humanities, with a background in German, Italian, or French Studies, beginning in August 2019. We especially encourage applicants with research and teaching interests in comparative European approaches to Environmental Humanities, including such areas as comparative eco-criticism; critical plant/animal studies; the Anthropocene; the nonhuman in the humanities; and energy humanities. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic, creative teacher-scholar committed to high-quality undergraduate and graduate education and student-faculty research. The successful candidate should have a strong interest in helping to forge links between SILC and the School of Sustainability, and in collaborating with scholars from other disciplines whose research lies within the overarching areas of the Environmental Humanities. Required Qualifications:

Ph.D. in German, Italian, or French, or related comparative field at the time of hire
Native or near-native proficiency in German, Italian, or French, and English

Experience teaching college-level courses in language, literature, and cultural studies
Evidence of ability to teach in the target language and in English

California State University Fresno (CA) - TT Asst. Professor - Italian[]

Title: Italian. Rank: Assistant Professor. Status: Tenure Track. Start: Fall 2019 (August 2019)

The successful candidate will be expected to teach Italian language courses at the undergraduate level. The successful candidate will also be expected to create and coordinate an interdisciplinary minor in Italian Studies that emphasizes Italian language, literature and culture as its core, and builds on the impact of Italy in art, engineering, fashion merchandising, graphic and interior design, history, political science, viticulture, among others. The upper-division courses will be taught in English. Should the successful candidate grow the program sufficiently large, there will be an opportunity to offer upper-division Italian literature courses in Italian in the future. The course load for the first two years is a 3-3 course load or 18 weighted teaching units. Beginning in the third year, the normal course load is four courses per semester. The successful candidate will also be expected to develop and enhance appropriate curricular offerings, supervise and assist students, and maintain a productive research agenda, including peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and other professional activities. Other faculty responsibilities include: serving on department, college, and university committees, engaging in community service and outreach, advising students, and interacting with faculty and students in related fields. Outcomes assessment and service learning are important components of the university curriculum. The successful candidate will be expected to work cooperatively with faculty and staff in the program, department, and college. Specific assignments are dependent on departmental needs and the background of the individual.

Stanford University (CA) - TT Asst. Professor of Italian[]

Stanford University is seeking applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Italian with a starting date of September 1, 2019. As part Stanford’s Division of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages – an innovative consortium of departments that collaborate on curricular and research initiatives – the Department of French and Italian at Stanford fosters comparative and interdisciplinary work. Candidates will be expected to teach courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, with preference given to those who have broad competency in the history of Italian literature and culture and can teach different time periods, from medieval to modern. Native or near native fluency in Italian and English is required; fluency in one or more additional languages is preferred. University of California, Davis (CA) - TT Asst. Professor in Medieval and/or Early Modern Italian Studies[]

The Department of French & Italian seeks a scholar of superior accomplishment and/or promise to fill a tenure-track, entry-level Assistant Professorposition in medieval and/or early modern Italian Studies, beginning July 1, 2019. We are seeking a literature specialist with broad interdisciplinary interests, a solid foundation in Italian language and culture, and a proven record of teaching excellence.  Candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent, native or near-native proficiency in Italian, and a strong commitment to research, teaching, and service.  Specifically, they must be able to demonstrate expertise in foreign language pedagogy, commitment to a student-centered classroom, and interest in designing and implementing large-enrollment, interdisciplinary lecture courses for non-Italian students.

University of California, Los Angeles (CA) - TT Asst. Professor of European Languages and Transcultural Studies (2 Positions, incl. Italian)[]

The Departments of French, Germanic, and Italian and the Scandinavian Section in the UCLA Division of Humanities are seeking to hire two (2) new faculty at the Assistant Professor level as part of an initiative to establish a new Department of European Languages and Transcultural Studies (ELTS). The ideal candidates will have expertise in transnational European contexts in any time period from the Middle Ages to today, have fluency in at least one of the above language traditions, while also being able to contribute in meaningful ways to a core curriculum. We are especially interested in applicants who work in literary studies, visual culture, film and media studies, digital / environmental / medical / urban humanities, and on critical thought and issues related to translation, diaspora and race, ethnic and religious minorities, migratory movements, and gender/sexuality. Applicants must have completed the Ph.D. by the time of the appointment (July 1, 2019).

  • This is a terribly disfunctional department that has shrunken dramatically in the last year. Former chair was put on leave for assaulting a graduate student. Godspeed to whoever gets the position. 
    • Which department are you talking about? ELTS will comprise French, Italian, German and Scandinavian. - It only became an umbrella department this year. Mismanagement and toxicity forced the collapse, after years of failing to improve undergraduate outreach. New chair tends to thwart Italian Studies' success as well. 

- Is it possible that nobody (not even in French or German) has heard a word about this? Are they actually so behind?? It seens that a candidate from French Studies has a campus invitation. Anybody from Italian?

University of California, Santa Cruz (CA) - TT Asst. Professor - Italian Literature and Culture[]

The Department of Literature [1] at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an Assistant Professor tenure-track position in Italian Literature and Culture. The study of literature at UCSC is organized as an interdisciplinary field coordinated through a single Department of Literature, rather than through separate departments of English, modern languages, and Classics. This structure fosters innovative and comparative approaches to literature among faculty and students. Courses in the major encompass traditional literary history and interpretation, cross-cultural inquiry and current theoretical debates, and new media. We seek a scholar specializing in Global Middle Ages and Dante, with interdisciplinary and/or comparative interests, who will contribute to existing departmental and divisional/campus strengths in any of the following areas: Mediterranean Studies; digital humanities; science and humanities; environmental humanities; empire, race, and colonial/postcolonial studies; film studies; gender and sexuality studies; Jewish Studies. The successful candidate will be expected to have expertise in at least one language literature outside Italian, and research/teaching areas that expand outward from Europe into the Arabo-Islamic Mediterranean, Asia, and/or Africa. The candidates must have university-level teaching experience and evidence of a developed research trajectory, as demonstrated in publications and professional activity. The appointee will be expected to teach large undergraduate lecture courses in English and smaller courses in both Italian (immersion style) and English; to contribute to a small but vibrant interdisciplinary Italian Studies Program; and to join an innovative graduate program in a large department of Literature.

Vassar College (NY) - TT Assistant Professor of Italian[]

The Department of Italian at Vassar College invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to start in Fall 2019.

The successful candidate will show a firm commitment to participating fully in a highly collegial department and teaching at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum. Teaching load in the first year is four courses. In ensuing years, it will be five courses or four plus an “intensive”. Experience and/or demonstrable interest in study abroad are highly desirable.

SOUTHERN METHODIST UNIVERSITY - FULL-TIME NON-TENURE TRACK LECTURER. The Department of World Languages and Literatures in Dedman College at Southern Methodist University seeks a full-time, non-tenure-track lecturer with an ability to teach beginning and intermediate French and Italian beginning in fall semester 2019. One year contract, renewable. M.A. or equivalent in French and/or Italian required; Ph.D. preferred. Normal teaching load is twelve credit hours per semester. We seek dynamic candidates with demonstrated excellence in teaching a variety of language and culture courses at the college level and with training in second language acquisition and pedagogy. Native or near-native proficiency in French, Italian, and English as well as experience teaching French and/or Italian at the university level are required.  Strong preference for candidates who can teach upper-level courses in either or both languages. Ability to develop and teach content courses in English, on topics like French and/or Italian cinema, literature, or culture, a plus. FRANKLIN & MARSHALL COLLEGE - One-year Visiting Assistant Professor/Instructor Position.

Each year the Center for Italian Modern Art (CIMA) awards multiple CIMA Fellowships to support research and study of Italian modern and contemporary art for doctoral and post-doctoral scholars. Citizens of all nationalities are eligible. CIMA offers a unique experience to its fellows: the annual exhibition serves as a hub for scholars from diverse academic backgrounds to share research derived from the artworks on view with each other and the public. The exhibition for CIMA’s next season (October 2019–June 2020) focuses on the series of nudes created by Marino Marini between 1936 and 1945.
