Dartmouth College - Assistant Professor, Japanese Language, Literature, and Culture

The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Languages and Literatures at Dartmouth College invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank in Japanese. Appointment will become effective July 1, 2015, with teaching duties beginning in September 2015. Applicants for this position must either hold a PhD or be ABD; additionally, they must have native or near native fluency in Japanese and English.

The field of specialization will be literature, film, or culture, with priority given to candidates whose research incorporates language and its relationship to issues of representation. In addition, candidates should have a demonstrated commitment to foreign language instruction. The successful candidate will participate in administering the Japanese language program and alternate direction of the annual ten-week study-abroad program in Chiba, Japan. The classroom teaching load is four courses per year, to be taught over three of the four quarters, and would include introductory classes and seminars in English as well as thematic courses in Japanese.

Florida State University - Assistant Professor in Japanese Literature and Cultural Studies

The Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at Florida State University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Japanese Literature and Cultural Studies, to begin August 2015. Full-Time, Tenure-Track Appointment in Modern Japanese Literature

The Department of Classical, Middle Eastern and Asian Languages and Cultures at Queens College, City University of New York (CUNY), invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment in modern Japanese literature at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin in the fall semester of 2015.

Responsibilities include teaching modern Japanese literature in translation, Japanese language courses at all levels, and contributing to departmental programs in East Asian Studies as well as to the College’s liberal arts curriculum. The successful candidate will also be expected to share responsibilities for committee and departmental activities.

Applicants should have a demonstrated commitment to teaching college-level Japanese literature and language courses and must provide evidence of an active research program.

Our department offers a wide variety of courses. In addition to language courses in ancient Greek, Latin, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic and Hebrew, we offer courses on both ancient Western and non-Western classics and on modern Asian and Middle Eastern cultures, taught in English and in one of the foreign languages we cover. By providing linguistic and cultural knowledge we help our students gain a solid foundation for a liberal arts education. We encourage students who have a background in the languages we teach to enhance their proficiency by taking advanced courses. Sequences of our courses may fulfill requirements for majors, minors and interdisciplinary concentrations.

UC Berkeley - Assistant/Associate/Full Professor - Northeast Asian Literature and Culture

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track appointment in Northeast Asian Literature and Culture. The expected start-date is July 1, 2015.

The department is particularly interested in receiving applications from scholars whose work focuses on premodern Japan (to 1868) and on one or more of the following: prose narrative, drama, visual studies, or cultural criticism. We are also open to scholarship that engages with multiple historical periods, geographical areas, genres and media.

Teaching duties will include courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels as well as doctoral advising. Candidates are expected to participate actively in the programs of the department as well as in larger Northeast Asian area studies initiatives within and beyond the university. Applicants for an assistant professor position must, at a minimum, be in the process of writing a doctoral dissertation or the equivalent at the time of application; applicants for an associate or full professor position must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent at the time of application. The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Florida invites applications for a tenure-track position in Japanese literature and culture, period open, beginning August 16, 2015. The successful candidate will contribute to the Japan track of the undergraduate B.A. in East Asian Languages and Literatures and will be able to contribute to the objectives of the University in the areas of interdisciplinary studies and internationalization through such activities as course development, curriculum enhancement and a dynamic research agenda. University of Oregon - Department Head/Advanced Associate or Full Professor, East Asian Languages and Literatures

The College of Arts and Sciences, University of Oregon, invites applications for a tenure-track advanced associate or full professor to head the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures (EALL).  EALL offers instruction in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, and courses focused on Chinese, Japanese, and Korean linguistics, literatures, and cultures.  The department offers bachelor’s degrees in Chinese and Japanese, master’s and doctoral degrees in Chinese Literature and Linguistics; master’s and doctoral degrees in Japanese Studies; an undergraduate minor in Korean Studies (a major is being developed) and accepts master’s and doctoral students in Korean Studies.

We seek a well-published scholar and accomplished teacher and administrator whose research expertise will contribute to the vibrant East Asian Studies community at the UO, which emphasizes specific area studies as well as transnational perspectives.  Requirements include a Ph.D. in an appropriate discipline, a current appointment as an advanced associate professor or full professor, and previous administrative experience. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to working with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.

The successful candidate will serve as department head for a three-year term, with the possibility of continuation; will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in her/his area of competence; and will participate in graduate advising, including serving on M.A. and Ph.D. committees for EALL and associated departments.  While the area of specialization is open, we have particular interest in scholars with expertise in one of the following areas: Japanese visual culture; premodern Japanese literature; Chinese visual culture; transnational media and culture. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Located 110 miles south of Portland, the University of Oregon has an enrollment of 25,000.  The Eugene metropolitan area (pop. 215,000) is in a region noted for its dynamic quality of life and a progressive cultural environment.  We are about an hour’s drive from the Pacific coast and the Cascade mountains.  The university is an AAU research institution and a member of the PAC-12 conference.
