About the Position: Carleton University’s Film Studies program, located in the School for Studies in Art and Culture, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning July 1, 2019. This posting is directed towards specialists in Asian cinema and media cultures, with a preference for scholars of Japanese cinema. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses at all year levels, as well as MA-level seminars, and also to supervise graduate theses. Although Carleton Film Studies does not include a PhD program, students have the option of applying to do doctoral work on film-related subjects under the supervision of Film Studies faculty members, through Carleton’s Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Culture.

Connecticut College (CT) - TT Open-rank Position in Transnational and Transcultural Japan Studies
The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Connecticut College invites applications for a full-time, open-rank tenured or tenure-track faculty position in transnational and transcultural Japan studies within the broader contexts of East Asian and global studies, beginning July 1, 2019.
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in East Asian Studies or a related field at the time of application and demonstrate excellence and experiences in both research and teaching. Areas of specialization are flexible, although we are particularly interested in hiring a Japan specialist who is also well-versed cross-disciplinarily in fields such as Korean studies, gender and ethnic studies, religious studies, environmental studies, or film and media studies. Preferences will be given to teacher-scholars showing native or near-native proficiency in both Japanese and English, and those who are flexible and accommodating in their course offerings.

Earlham College (IN) - TT Asst. Professor of Japanese Studies
Earlham College invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Japanese Studies, a tenure-track position. The position in the Japanese Studies Program begins in July 2019.
The College's hope is to find a colleague with expertise in the Visual and Performing Arts or the Humanities who is committed to helping to foster an innovative Japanese Studies program that is diverse and inclusive. The Program is particularly interested in candidates who can teach courses in pre-modern or modern Japanese literature and whose courses intersect with existing programs in the Humanities or Visual and Performing Arts.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities: This is a full-time, nine-month position that includes a teaching load of three courses per semester. In addition to teaching courses in their area of expertise, the successful candidate is expected to share teaching of the Program’s core courses Introduction to the Study of Japan and Senior Capstone Experience. Candidates whose teaching and scholarship relate to literature, visual and performing arts, art history, film and media studies, or popular or visual culture of Japan are highly encouraged to apply. Language teaching is not expected as part of this position. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate is expected to be actively involved with institutional committees, academic advising, and leading off-campus study programs. Finally, the successful candidate should carry on active scholarship focusing on Japan or East Asia.
Experience & Qualifications: Candidates with an earned doctorate are preferred, though ABD candidates will be considered provided they can demonstrate significant progress towards completion of the dissertation. Job requirements: The position is open for all fields of Japanese Studies. Candidates must exhibit the ability to conduct high-quality academic research which draws on Japanese-language sources. Knowledge of other Asian languages is an advantage.

Kanagawa University (JAPAN) - 2 Open Rank Faculty Positions
Kanagawa University (position starts in 2020) Kanagawa University in Yokohama, Japan, invites applications for two full-time, open-rank faculty positions in the Department of Cross-Cultural Studies, part of a new Faculty of International and Japan Studies that will be established in 2020. University of California, Irvine (CA) - Open Rank - Japanese Environmental Humanities Position
The Department of East Asian Studies invites applications for an open rank position in Japanese Environmental Humanities, appointment to begin 1 July 2019. Discipline is open to Japanese cinema, literature, philosophy, history, theater, anthropology, visual studies, political thought, or any field that uses Japanese texts to study the relation between nature and society, science and politics, the material and the ideal. - Princeton University is pleased to announce the call for applications to the Fung Global Fellows Program at the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS). Each year the program selects six scholars from around the world to be in residence at Princeton for an academic year and to engage in research and discussion around a common theme. Candidates will be considered in three categories: (1) Four of the fellowships will be awarded to early-career scholars employed in the equivalent of tenure-track positions who are expected to return to their position. (2) One fellowship is set aside for a postdoctoral research associate who at the time of application does not have a tenure-track faculty appointment. (3) In addition, one fellowship will be awarded to a senior scholar. All candidates must be based outside the United States.
- During the academic year 2019-20, the Fung Global Fellows Program theme will be “Thinking Globally.” How people have thought about the planet has informed the institutions, norms, and policies that have pulled it together and torn it apart. For centuries, ideas of free trade, human rights or global governance have framed cooperation and competition, order and disorder. Such ideas have also spawned border-crossing movements, from campaigns to end slavery to commitments to reduce carbon emissions. In turn, global thinking and action have often reinforced commitments to national ideas and efforts to curb global exchange. The goal of this research theme is to explore how ideas framed the understanding of interests and the making of institutions that have yielded commonness and conflict across and within borders. We also want to understand how these ideas and practices came into being through scientific networks, foundations, and think tanks. The Program will also examine rival world ideas that have challenged prevailing orthodoxies. Nowadays, with cooperative norms under challenge, global institutions under stress, and a century of guiding ideas about global convergence in doubt, we want to take a broad look at where these ideas came from, their effects, and the prospects for intellectual renewal or rethinking. The goal of the 2019-20 Fung Global Fellows cohort will be to explore the ways people learned to rely on or to reject strangers far away, as well as to imagine how global relationships came to be and could be different. We welcome applicants from all disciplinary and inter-disciplinary fields from the sciences to the humanities whose work addresses this set of themes in any historical period or world region.

- The Department of Asian Languages and Literature at the University of Washington seeks to appoint a full-time Lecturer in Japanese.
