The School of International Letters & Cultures (SILC) at Arizona State University (ASU) is seeking a full-time, 9-month faculty member at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor in the area of Modern Japanese Literature and Culture. The successful candidate will contribute to curriculum development in Modern Japanese language, literature, and culture; teach a minimum of two courses per semester at the undergraduate and graduate level on the Tempe campus; supervise honors, masters and doctoral students; conduct research and publish in top-tier journals and presses; participate in professional and university service. We seek teaching and research strengths in Japan and/or Korean studies, ideally including trans-national/inter-Asian empirical and theoretical interests. Earlham College (IN) - TT Assistant Professor of Japanese Studies

Earlham College invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Japanese Studies, a tenure-track position. The position in the Japanese Studies Program begins in July 2018.

The College's hope is to find a colleague with expertise in the Visual and Performing Arts or the Humanities who is committed to helping to foster an innovative Japanese Studies program that is diverse and inclusive. The Program is particularly interested in candidates who can teach courses in pre-modern or modern Japanese literature and whose courses intersect with existing programs in the Humanities or Visual and Performing Arts.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities: This is a full-time, nine-month position that includes a teaching load of three courses per semester. In addition to teaching courses in their area of expertise, the successful candidate is expected to share teaching of the Program’s core courses Introduction to the Study of Japan and Senior Capstone Experience. Candidates whose teaching and scholarship relate to literature, visual and performing arts, art history, film and media studies, or popular or visual culture of Japan are highly encouraged to apply. Language teaching is not expected as part of this position.

In addition to teaching, the successful candidate is expected to be actively involved with institutional committees, academic advising, and leading off-campus study programs. Finally, the successful candidate should carry on active scholarship focusing on Japan or East Asia.

Experience & Qualifications: Candidates with an earned doctorate are preferred, though ABD candidates will be considered provided they can demonstrate significant progress towards completion of the dissertation. The successful candidate’s research and teaching should focus on Japan, but candidates whose scholarship and teaching include additional East Asian geographical or cultural contexts, especially those related to China, are welcome. Florida State University (FL) - TT Assistant Professor in East Asian Languages and Linguistics

The Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at the Florida State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in East Asian Languages and Linguistics beginning August 2018. Nagoya University (JAPAN) - Tenured Associate Professor of Cultural Studies and English

The Graduate School of Humanities, Nagoya University, Japan is pleased to announce a job opening for an Associate Professor starting from April 1, 2018. This position entails instruction at both the graduate and the undergraduate levels.

5. Primary responsibilities: (1) To teach graduate courses in cultural studies (preferably on subculture) or translation studies in the Global 30 Linguistics and Cultural Studies Program. (2) To teach undergraduate English as a Foreign Language courses. (3) To contribute to the research and educational projects of Nagoya University. (4) To do other duties including administrative work.

• Note: The teaching load will be approximately five 90-minute classes per week. Northwestern University (IL) - Associate or Full Professor - Asian Humanities

The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at Northwestern University seeks to appoint a full-time, tenured faculty member in a field in the Asian Humanities beginning in Fall, 2018. Randolph-Macon College (VA) - TT Assistant Professor of Japanese Studies - OFFER ACCEPTED

The Asian Studies Program at Randolph-Macon College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Japanese Studies, to begin in the Fall semester of 2018. The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Stanford University is seeking applicants for a tenure track Assistant Professor in the area of premodern Japanese literature. Areas of secondary interest include but are not limited to Japanese History, Performance, Religious Studies, Visual Culture, Gender Studies, and Chinese Language and Literature. The Department of East Asian Studies in the School of International Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (SILLC) at the University of Arizona invites applications for a tenure-track position beginning August 2018 at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of Japanese Studies with an emphasis in history, cultural studies, or thought. Ph.D. in hand is expected by the time of the appointment, August 2018.

We seek applicants with specializations that offer potential for trans-regional, interdisciplinary, and thematic resonance within the EAS department and across the university. Period of research specialization is open, but our strong preference is for broadly trained scholars of Japan who can contribute to teaching and advising across both the pre-modern and modern period. Doctoral training in historical method is preferred, but applications from other specialists in thought or intellectual history are welcome. We are particularly interested in applicants with innovative, interdisciplinary approaches to Japanese studies in teaching and research, who situate Japan in regional and global contexts and engage diverse audiences, and who broaden existing departmental strengths in literature, religion, linguistics, and the anthropology of East Asia. For candidates interested in the history or culture of science and/or technology in Japan, possibilities may exist for collaboration with Planetary Scientists working in collaboration with the Japan Space Agency.

Teaching responsibility is four courses per year, including a lower-division Japanese Civilization course complemented by upper-division courses on pre-modern and modern Japan, graduate courses, and topics in the applicant’s area of specialization.
