Experience teaching Korean language and Korean culture courses at college level. Research program and publications in the area of desired specialization or related field. Experience and interest in the use of technology and the development of hybrid courses. Background or experience in applied Korean linguistics and familiarity with new pedagogies and methodologies of teaching Korean language and culture.

Cornell University (NY) - TT Assistant Professorship in Northeast Asian Critical Humanities (incl. Korea)[]

The Department of Asian Studies at Cornell University welcomes applications for a Tenure-track Assistant Professorship in Northeast Asian Critical Humanities. We seek teaching and research strengths in Japan and/or Korean studies, ideally including trans-national/inter-Asian empirical and theoretical interests. Applications are welcome from candidates working in modern, or across premodern and modern, contexts. Candidates should be prepared to contribute to the undergraduate curriculum through courses in their fields of specialization as well as through survey and gateway courses. The successful candidate will enter a department that approaches Asian Humanities from diverse, but often complementary, disciplinary and theoretical arenas, including literature, film, media and visual culture, literary and intellectual history, religious studies, the investigation of imperial and colonial cultural forms and processes, translation studies, and study of modernities. While the Department of Asian Studies constitutes the teaching and tenure home for this position, the successful candidate will also make contributions to one or more of Cornell University’s thematic and area studies programs. Emory University (GA) - TT Asst. Professor - Korean Studies[]

The Department of Russian and East Asian Languages and Cultures (REALC) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Korean Studies with a background in the humanities including, but not limited to, the fields of literature, gender, media and cultural studies, philosophy, religion, and history. The candidate is expected to teach a survey course with a focus on modern Korea. The Department is particularly interested in candidates whose scholarship is inter-disciplinary and inter-regional (within East Asia and beyond). Successful candidates must have a PhD in hand by the time of appointment, and demonstrate an active research agenda and a commitment to teaching at the undergraduate level and to development of graduate programming. Candidates will also adhere to best practices and demonstrate an ability to advance Emory College’s goals of diversity and inclusion. Near native proficiency in both English and Korean is required.

Northwestern University (IL) - Associate or Full Professor - Asian Humanities[]

The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at Northwestern University seeks to appoint a full-time, tenured faculty member in a field in the Asian Humanities beginning in Fall, 2018. We welcome candidates who work across multiple genres and media, from classical to contemporary periods, and in any Asian languages. We are particularly interested in a scholar and teacher who combines intellectual breadth and scholarly distinction in his or her field with a commitment to programmatic leadership and growth.

The successful candidate will join several tenured and tenure-line faculty specializing in Chinese, Japanese, Hindi, Korean, and Urdu literature and media cultures, as well as sixteen continuing lecturer faculty in Chinese, Hindi-Urdu, Japanese, and Korean language in the newly-formed Department of Asian Languages and Cultures. As a new member of a growing department, the candidate should bring excellence in research and teaching, as well as enthusiasm and creativity to developing undergraduate curricula, and, at a future date, building a competitive graduate program.

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at Smith College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Korean Language, Literature, and Culture, to begin July 2018. The position is a full time appointment with full benefits. The successful candidate will teach four courses in Korean language and Korean literature/culture in translation. Applicants must have a native or near-native fluency in Korean and English, a Ph.D. or ABD status with a specialization in Korean literature/culture, and experience in language teaching at all levels, with a commitment to excellence in scholarship and teaching. The ideal candidate will be able to teach courses that bridge disciplines, which may include environmental literature, film and media, or the study of women and gender.

Stanford University seeks candidates for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position in the social sciences. The position would be a dual appointment in the Department of Anthropology and the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI), affiliated with the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center. The successful candidate will have an outstanding record in teaching and research with a focus on contemporary Korea. S/he would be expected to provide leadership for further development of the study of Korea at Stanford University.

University at Albany, SUNY (NY) - TT Assistant Professor, Modern and Contemporary Korean Culture[]

The Department of East Asian Studies at the University at Albany, State University of New York, seeks candidates for a tenure track assistant professor position in modern and contemporary Korean culture to begin Fall 2018. The successful candidate is expected to 1) teach five lower and upper division courses on pre-modern and modern Korea per year; 2) pursue an active program of research; and 3) participate in service responsibilities, including undergraduate advising. Ph.D. in hand from a university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization is required. Preference will be given to candidates whose research demonstrates an ability to locate Korean culture within the broader context of other East Asian cultures, especially China and Japan. The University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and UI International Programs invite applications for the position of C. Maxwell and Elizabeth M. Stanley Family and Korea Foundation Chair in Korean Studies, at the full professor or senior associate professor levels, to commence in the Fall of 2018.

Applicants must be specialists in a humanities or social science discipline, must have primary research and teaching expertise in Korean Studies, and may also have interdisciplinary and/or supranational research interests.

Appointment will be to an appropriate disciplinary department. The successful applicant will also hold a 0% appointment in International Programs, and is expected to be an active participant in the activities of the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies. Review processes, teaching assignments, and primary responsibility for mentorship will reside within the department of appointment. This is an endowed position with a reduced teaching load and annual research funds.

Applicants must demonstrate a record of excellence in scholarship and teaching commensurate with a position at the senior associate professor or full professor levels, and be able to teach courses that meet the needs of the department of appointment as well as complement existing strengths within the department and college. Applicants must also demonstrate a level of language fluency in both English and Korean appropriate for research and teaching.

The Department of Asian Languages & Literature seeks to appoint a full-time Lecturer or full-time Senior Lecturer in Korean. The initial appointment, starting Autumn Quarter 2018, is for three years, with the possibility of renewal. Applicants must have at least an M.A. degree in Korean, Foreign Language Teaching, or another relevant area, must have native or near-native proficiency in Korean, be fluent in English, and have at least one year of experience teaching at the college or university level.
