The Department of Anthropology at Binghamton University (SUNY) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Linguistic Anthropology to begin in Fall 2015.

The Department seeks a linguistic anthropologist who takes a semiotic approach to language and power as they relate to micro/macro political processes focusing on cultural belonging and citizenship. Of special interest is scholarship in one or more of the following areas: linguistic citizenship, participatory democracy, sociolinguistics, language and ideology, language endangerment, and/or language and gender/class/ethnicity.

The successful applicant will teach undergraduate and graduate courses as required by the Department, including introductory core courses and advanced seminars; contribute to the Harpur College of Arts and Sciences' Linguistics Program; advise students; and engage in scholarship and service. This position will contribute to the University's transdisciplinary area of excellence (TAE) in Citizenship, Rights, and Cultural Belonging. The TAE program seeks to build on several key existing strengths across departments at Binghamton University. This TAE focuses on claims to citizenship, rights, and cultural belonging, as well as the conflicts that these claims often create. Requirements: Applicants must have a PhD in hand, extensive ethnographic field experience, demonstrated teaching experience, and publications. Applicant interests should complement existing strengths in the department, particularly those of our sociocultural anthropology program.

Montclair State University (NJ) - Linguistic Anthropology - New Deadline: Dec. 15 - CAMPUS INTERVIEWS SCHEDULED[]

The Department of Anthropology at Montclair State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in linguistic anthropology at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning Fall 2015. We seek a publicly engaged linguistic anthropologist whose work addresses questions of language, power, and inequality. Specialty and geographical area are open. A willingness to engage students in local ethnographic fieldwork or internship projects and an interest in applied aspects of anthropology are also welcomed. The successful candidate will be expected to teach introductory undergraduate courses in linguistic and cultural anthropology, upper-level undergraduate courses in their fields of specialization, and exhibit a commitment to service to the department, college, and university.

Candidates must have a PhD in Anthropology at the time of appointment, an active research agenda, a demonstrated excellence in teaching, and an ability to interact with a diverse student body.

SUNY Albany (NY) - Asst. Professor - Linguistic Anthropology and Linguistics - Nov. 30[]

The Department of Anthropology, University at Albany, SUNY, seeks an Assistant Professor with a specialization in Linguistic Anthropology and Linguistics. The candidate will be expected to teach core undergraduate courses in introductory linguistics (including morphology, syntax, or semantics) and contribute linguistics courses to the graduate program in Anthropology (e.g. historical linguistics, language documentation, field methods, language and culture). A regional focus in indigenous languages of North America or Mesoamerica is preferred.

Requirements: The successful candidate must hold a doctoral degree in Anthropology or Linguistics, with an emphasis on fieldwork and language documentation from a university accredited by the U. S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization. Additionally, applicants must address in their applications their ability to work with a culturally diverse population.

University of Alabama (AL) - Linguistic Anthropology - March 3 - POSITION FILLED[]

The Department of Anthropology of The University of Alabama invites applications for an entry level tenure-track position in linguistic anthropology, to begin August, 2015. The PhD is required at the time of appointment. We seek a linguistic anthropologist with an active research agenda who possesses advanced skills in both linguistic and ethnographic methods. Topical and geographic specializations are open, although the applicant should complement existing specialties in the department’s four-field anthropology program. The successful candidate will teach core undergraduate and graduate level classes in linguistic anthropology, as well as courses in their areas of specialization.

The Department of Anthropology takes a traditional four-field approach to the BA, MA, and PhD degrees, emphasizing two areas of specialization that crosscut sub-disciplines: biocultural medical anthropology and the archaeology of complex societies in the Americas. The Department of Anthropology invites applications for a tenure-track position in linguistic anthropology beginning July 1, 2015. We seek applications from linguistic anthropologists whose anthropological research is broadly concerned with the study of language within the context of cultural and social life as it articulates with the intersections of class, race, and/or gender. Specializations in bilingualism or multilingualism are also desirable.

The ideal candidate’s research and teaching should interface with one or more of the areas of departmental strength. The successful candidate will be expected to teach lower-division as well as upper-division and graduate courses in her or his area of specialization. Job Title: Assistant Professor in Sociocultural Linguistics

The Linguistics Department of the University of California, Santa Barbara seeks to hire a specialist in sociocultural linguistics. The appointment will be tenure-track at the Assistant Professor level, effective July 1, 2015. We are especially interested in candidates whose research has theoretical implications bridging linguistic anthropology, sociolinguistics, and related areas. We prefer candidates whose research engages with the departmental focus on discourse-functional approaches to language and who can interact with colleagues and students across disciplinary boundaries at UCSB. Language area is open, although experience in conducting research on a language other than English is desirable. Candidates must have demonstrated excellence in teaching, and will be expected to teach a range of graduate and undergraduate courses in sociocultural linguistics and to contribute to the department's majors in Linguistics and in Language, Culture, and Society. The Department of Anthropology, Sociology and Languages at the University of Missouri-St. Louis invites applications for a tenured position at the Full Professor level to begin in the Fall of 2015. The successful candidate will serve a three-year, renewable term as Department Chair, and must provide evidence of leadership skills and three years of experience in college or university administration. Preferred experience includes curriculum design, program-building, and outreach.

Rutgers University (NJ) - Visiting Asst. Professor (NTT) Cultural/Linguistic Anthropology (Deadline May 15, 2015)[]

The Department of Anthropology at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, is searching for a visiting assistant professor (teaching instructor) in cultural and/or linguistic anthropology in New Brunswick, New Jersey, for the 2015-2016 academic year. The candidate will teach five semester-long undergraduate courses including Introduction to Linguistic Anthropology, Language and Cultural Diversity, Method and Analysis in Cultural Anthropology, and two other courses. Topics might include Islam, local-global systems, sexuality, medical anthropology, and law, justice, and rights. ABD candidates will be considered, but candidates holding a Ph.D. are preferred.
