Although the area of research specialization is open, the successful candidate must have the demonstrated ability to teach a variety of introductory and more advanced courses. The ideal candidate would be able to teach courses in any two of the traditional fields of anthropology.

Preferred candidates will hold a Ph.D. in Anthropology or a related field and will demonstrate a primary commitment to undergraduate teaching and an ongoing research program. University of California Berkeley (CA) - TT Assistant Professor - Historical Linguistics or Language in Social Context - Deadline: 17 Nov. 2017[]

The Department of Linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley, has been authorized to make one appointment in either historical linguistics or language in social context. This position will be at the rank of assistant professor (tenure-track). Salary will be commensurate with experience. Duties will include undergraduate and graduate advising, teaching (up to four courses per year), supervision of student research, and development of a successful and original research program. The PhD (or equivalent degree) is required by the start date of the appointment; all degree requirements other than the dissertation must be complete at the time of application.

Applicants must have a broad intellectual engagement in linguistics and a research specialization in either historical linguistics or language in social context. A research specialization in historical linguistics might address language change, contact, diversification, or spread; linguistic reconstruction; or relations between linguistic prehistory and human prehistory generally. A research specialization in language in social context might address social variation; bilingualism; language contact; language ideologies; social pragmatics; or language attrition, endangerment, or revitalization. Applicants should also ideally have research interests or skills that intersect with a neighboring area (e.g. anthropology or archaeology, cognitive science, computational or statistical modeling, corpus or experimental linguistics, language documentation, linguistic theory, linguistic typology, or literary analysis), and that will contribute actively to the intellectual life of a broad linguistics community. Applicants must be able to teach general linguistics courses and courses at all levels in historical linguistics or language in social context, including seminars and research mentoring.

University of California San Diego (CA) - TT Assistant or Assoc. Professor - Linguistic or Sociocultural Anthropologist - Deadline: 20 Nov. 2017[]

Description The University of California San Diego Department of Anthropology http://anthro.ucsd.edu invites applications for a position in linguistic or sociocultural anthropology at the rank of associate or assistant professor with a start date of July 1, 2018. Candidates must have received their PhD in anthropology or a closely related ethnographic field. We strongly prefer that candidates have received their PhD and have at least five years experience teaching or conducting research at the college or university level.

We seek ethnographically grounded and theoretically rigorous scholars whose research examines relations of power. We are particularly interested in a new colleague who focuses on: language use and regimentation; socioeconomic disparity and political ecology; formations of race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, or religion; or colonial/postcolonial relations. Geographic region is open; candidates whose area of expertise is the Middle East, Africa, or their diasporas are especially encouraged to apply. We seek a colleague who will complement and expand our department’s current conceptual, methodological, and regional strengths while communicating across disciplinary and departmental boundaries, including, when pertinent, co-teaching with departmental colleagues.

The Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Child and Family Studies at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette invites applications for an Instructor of Anthropology position to begin August 2018. We are seeking a candidate with a strong background in Linguistic Anthropology with interests in Indigenous linguistics, critical language policy, and geolinguistics.

Requirements: A minimum of an M.A. in Anthropology is required, Ph.D. preferred. Qualified candidates will possess demonstrated excellence in teaching, scholarship, and outreach. Candidates should also have experience working with a diverse student body. Preferred candidates will be able to teach a variety of courses including Linguistic Anthropology, Introduction to Cultural Anthropology, Anthropology of Religion, North American Indians, Digital Anthropology, and Introduction to Anthropology at the undergraduate level.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in anthropology (5/4) and advise students. This position is also expected to provide service to the department, college, university, and the community.

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania seeks to fill a position in linguistic anthropology at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to start Fall 2018. Specialty and geographic area are open. We welcome applications from candidates whose work employs the analysis of language as semiotic form to study large-scale sociocultural processes, such as those enabled by institutions of media, democracy, law, education, or commerce. Desired qualifications include a broad training in linguistic anthropology, a background in language-centered fieldwork that includes work in a non-Indo-European language, an established research program and publication trajectory, evidence of effective undergraduate teaching, and the ability to direct graduate research.

University of Richmond (VA) - TT Asst. Professor - Linguistic Anthropology / Anthropology of Language - Deadline: 15 Oct. 2017 - CANCELLED[]

The Department of Sociology & Anthropology invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position to begin August 2018. We seek a candidate whose research is theoretically rigorous and ethnographically grounded and who possesses a strong commitment to high quality undergraduate education, with a primary expertise in linguistic anthropology/anthropology of language. The candidate should be prepared to teach introduction to cultural anthropology, ethnographic methods; and advanced courses in their specific areas of expertise. The teaching load is five courses per year with small class sizes. The successful candidate will be expected to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds. The position requires that the successful candidate pursue an active research agenda. The department and university also provide the opportunity to supervise undergraduate research. In the past year, the School of Arts and Sciences has added to its current linguistics-focused language professors, three new linguistics specialists in the fields of psychology, classical studies, and Spanish language studies. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Anthropology or be ABD with an anticipated completion by July 31, 2018.

Kansas State University (KS) - 1 year VAP with possibility for renewal - Deadline: 29 March 2018[]

The department seeks applicants with specializations in teaching linguistic and cultural anthropology and additional teaching interests that complement current faculty. This is a one year teaching position starting August 2018 with the possibility of renewal. Teaching responsibilities include six courses per academic year including Introduction to Linguistic Anthropology and other linguistic and cultural courses to be determined in consultation with the program. At least one course will be delivered online. PhD or ABD in linguistic anthropology or cultural anthropology (with ling anth training) needed. Documentation of teaching excellence at the undergraduate level is also required.
