Does anybody know why this position attracts all these weird discussions? As I recall people complained about the shortlist having only people from the east coast, about a PhD student getting an offer, gloated that the first candidate rejected the offer, and now everybody's upset that they chose a semanticist. Calm down!

She took the job and is in Boise teaching, but now she's leaving for another position.

Anyone know why "she" is leaving for another position?

From the one leaving: an opportunity for the whole family arose elsewhere. It has nothing to do with the job here (in case that's why you asked), which has been great (hope it's allowed for me to say that here). I've been meaning to post something in the "places to love" Wiki.

Notes:

Did anybody get confirmation of receipt of your application?

Yes, for the Variation job, on 11/12.
- Eep. Did you ask for it? (Could it be that both my mailed AND emailed applications got lost?)
No. (Not really possible.)
Yes, on 11/21. (In reply to an email I sent on 11/15 asking for confirmation.)
Interesting, I didn't get any confirmation and I sent my material on Oct 30th. Should I ask for a confirmation?
Probably not necessary (given the 2 different formats requested) unless it makes a big difference to your anxiety levels. I don't think confirmations are being sent consistently except for those who request it - I got an acknowledgement when I emailed about another matter a few weeks after the deadline.
Invited for LSA interview (12/15)

Department: Linguistics

Rank: TT Assistant Professor

Notes:

Conf. of receipt via email the day after application was sent (11/10)

Received rejection via email (12/8) x5

Was this rejection received after an interview, or no interview at all?

After no interview.

Interviews with 8 finalists scheduled for LSA or Skype in early Jan.

There seems to be a shortlist. Some job talks have been scheduled, not sure how many candidates. (1/23)

Was there an offer?

yes, and it was accepted.

Apr. 19th - Unless there are TWO acceptors in Portland, OR, the above response relates to the OTHER Socio-Phonetics job.

They have recruited an anthropological linguistics TT AP in addition to filling the socio-phonetics job above. He can also teach sociolinguistics, and he has probably been hired instead of the sociolinguist. He is from Alaska not Oregon (as per Department's e-newsletter on their home page). Since G'town has hired 4 linguists for Fall '12 it's unlikely that will hire anyone else this year.

Feb. 3rd, 2012: Two MIT graduates scheduled for Job Talks in February.

They picked a candidate.

There was some info here, why did you delete it? Anyone knows what is happening with this position?

Their candidate of choice has declined their offer. They have now made a second offer, to the semanticist who was on the shortlist.

Is that even legal under affirmative action law? I thought you had to hire in the advertised area, to ensure the whole relevant applicant pool was considered? -- Given that the hire is a woman, I doubt any affirmative action watchdogs would mind. As long as it's not a white male, they ain't care.

Does anybody know why this position attracts all these weird discussions? As I recall people complained about the shortlist having only people from the east coast, about a PhD student getting an offer, gloated that the first candidate rejected the offer, and now everybody's upset that they chose a semanticist. Calm down!

Amen to the previous comment. Congrats to the person who got the offer! -- Can't it be both? Congratulations to the person who got the offer, and gee whiz Harvard has a screwed up process?

LSA Interview (1/8)

Got request for a phone/skype interview x 2 (1/11/2012)

Received email (after having a first-round phone/skype interview) saying that a shortlist has been formed and I'm not on it. (1/23/2012) x 2 {C}Six people have been shortlisted for campus visits, and the visits are already in progress. Some details can be inferred from the schedule of talks .

There seems to be a taboo around here on naming names, so let's infer more specifically that the shortlist includes:

Two current Ph.D. students from Harvard
One 2006 Ph.D., University of Frankfurt
One current Ph.D. student at MIT
One 2011 Ph.D, UCLA
One 2011 Ph.D., UC Santa Cruz
Feb. 14, 2012: a candidate has been chosen; the name will be known as soon as the offer is officially extended.
-- And the winner is? Frankfurt ...

From the HSSP page:

Email from school of PPLS: "The PPLS appointment panel made decisions about shortlisting for all Fellowships in the School. The strenght of the applicant field was such that we shortlisted only candidates already submissible for the REF. This meant that everyone shortlisted is some years past their PhD and already in a research or teaching post. We were obliged to choose the people with the strongest records, which simply meant that recent PhDs were not competitive". Frankly, I found this a bit surprising as the scheme sounds like it is aimed more at junior-level applicants but I guess considering the current state of the job market they'll take the highest possible qualified applicants.

Had you written to them? (I also applied, but have heard nothing...) (x2)

University of Hawaii (SLA)

Deadline: December 31, 2011

Field(s): Second Language Acquisition

Department: Second Language Studies

Rank: Assistant Professor

URL: http://www.hawaii.edu/sls/sls/?page_id=1590

Additional info:

Assistant Professor, with specialization in second language acquisition, two positions (position numbers 82418 and 82462), University of Hawai’i at Manoa College of Languages, Linguistics and Literature, full-time, tenure track. The Department of Second Language Studies offers a BA, an MA and a PhD in Second Language Studies as well as an Advanced Graduate Certificate. The University of Hawai’i is a Carnegie “very high research activity university” with a strong orientation to the Asia-Pacific region. The University supports interdisciplinary initiatives within and across departments and colleges and places high value on extramural funding.

Duties and responsibilities: The Department seeks to hire two faculty members at the assistant professor level in the area of second language acquisition to teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the area of SLA, with opportunities to teach in other areas of the Department’s curriculum as appropriate.

Of particular interest are candidates whose research focuses on one or more of the following areas:

  • acquisition of SL phonology
  • bilingualism in social and cognitive contexts
  • cognitive, sociocultural, neurological and ecological perspectives in SL learning
  • heritage language learners
  • identity and SLA
  • individual differences in SLA
  • instructed SLA
  • multilingual literacy development
  • technology and SLA
  • young learners.

Minimum qualifications: Doctorate in second language studies, applied linguistics, or closely related field by August 2012. Demonstrated ability to carry out research in the applicant’s major areas of specialization, as evidenced by publication.

Annual 9-month salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience

To apply: Send cover letter describing research and teaching interests and experience, a CV, a research statement, a teaching statement (including a list of courses taught), sample publications, and a summary of teaching evaluations. In addition, letters of reference should be submitted directly by three recommenders. All application materials should be sent as email attachments to: slschair@hawaii.edu. Please do not specify position number; application for one implies application for both.

Notes:

Applied: (x3)

I applied on 12/31, but have not received confirmation. Has anyone received confirmation?

  • R: I applied on 12/23 and received confirmation on 12/26.
  • R2: I sent my materials on 12/27 and received a confirmation on 12/28. I'd give them a couple of days to catch up from the holidays.
  • 12 Jan: Recieved request for missing recommendation letter indicating that the rest of my application is in hand.
  • Applied 12/2 and received email confirmation on 12/18 (1/13)

Received an email from their EEO office to provide voluntary applicant race/gender information for administrative purposes. (1/13) x4

Received a second email confirmation that my application was in. First one came on 12/18. Another one today on 1/19. Strange. x5

Feb 4 have not heard anything more than the 2 confirmations.

Feb 4: Me either. It's been over a month and no official word. Strange. Most places start scheduling interviews within a week or two.

  • Not strange at all to me. In this crazy dry market right now, a tenure-track SLA gig at an R1 university in a tropical paradise is the sweetest job on the planet, and they have _two_ of those open along with another in SLEd. They are probably innundated with hundreds of applications, and each poor search committee member can only read but so many while still getting regular work done. I'm surprised they're even managing to move as fast as being able to host campus visits possibly at month's end.

Feb 6: I contacted the dept. asking for an update on the search schedule. They responded that they anticipate inviting finalists to Hawaii for campus visits late Feb early Mar. As far as I know, said finalists have not yet been notified. Just wanted to put this info out there for those of you trying to organize yourselves and figure out where the timing of this search might fit into whatever else you've got going on this season. Good luck!

Feb 15: I heard they are conducting phone interviews over the next couple of weeks.

  • Do you know whether they have contacted those being interviewed yet?

Feb 20: Any news? Has anyone been called for phone interviews or campus visits? Feb 23: Anybody?

Feb 26: I know someone who had a phone interview already but I don't think they've made any decisions about campus visits yet. That phone interview only happened the other day.

A: Sometimes candidates look a lot less interesting and impressive once you get them on campus in person. Or, if the candidate is so highly-qualified, they might get multiple offers and turn a few down.

19 Dec: received email saying they are now reviewing apps, and they hope to contact people for phone interviews by 1/13 (for interviews in the 3rd week of January) x4

details from the email received 12/19: "They hope to hold phone interviews with 9-12 candidates during the third week of January 2012. If the committee would like to schedule a phone interview with you, hopefully you will be contacted no later than Friday January 13th."

1/15: still no word beyond the email saying they would hopefully contact us by 1/13 x4

1/23: Anyone heard anything?

1/23: I had a phone interview over the weekend. They said they plan to come up with a shortlist within the next week or so. x2

2/16: from the looks of their website , it looks like they have made their shortlist. there are 3 "syntax search" talks and sample lessons listed, and they had told interviewees that the shortlist would be a 3-person list.

2/18 Does anybody know if these "syntax search" talks are actually happening? (One should have already taken place this week, by the schedule.) No rumours concerning the shortlist, no rejection emails, and the talk listings are anonymous. Very strange stuff.

2/27: rejection letter (snail mail) indicating 3 people have been invited to campus

3/13: I heard they are going for the same person as another syntax search...

4/02: At any rate: http://whisc.blogspot.com/2012/04/andrew-mckenzie-goes-to-kansas.html -- this is not the same job. But both have indeed been offerred and, if I'm not mistaken, accepted.

I'm pretty sure they have a shortlist now. I'm not on it, but I've been told that someone else is. Not sure what other people's experiences were, but they didn't even get as far as asking my referees for references.

UK departments normally don't ask for references for people they are not going to interview, and I've heard they had several hundred applicants - imagine reading through all those references in addition to everything else!

Dec 8: received acknowledgement of receipt and affirmative action survey. I guess they just wanted to tease those of us who didn't get asked for LSA interviews? (x8)

Dec. 19: received e-mail saying I'm not on first-round interview list, but my name is still of serious interest...any ideas what this is supposed to mean?

I'm guessing that means they might interview you if they don't like what they get after LSA

Yes, I'd second that. Sounds like you're an alternate. Nice of them to say something, rather than leaving you in the lurch, as they do to most alternates.

12/20 In the lurch x1

Dec 21: received email saying I'm no longer under consideration for the position x3

Jan 2: received email saying I'm not on the inverview list but that I'm still "under consideration" x3

Mar 3rd: There's a 'Past Event' on Feb. 17th, 2012 marked: "Recruitment Colloquium-department speaker - TBD; 04:00PM - 05:30PM"

To above - as I understand it, that was a colloquium that was taking place during *student* recruitment. The campus visits had already concluded by then. (according to a friend who was on the short list)

Mar. 24th: Offer accepted, see HERE.

March 27: The blog post linked to on March 24th was for a different position. As far as I know this search is still open.

-- It's a little more complicated than that: after the campus visits concluded, they petitioned their administration to make two offers, one to their preferred Phon candidate, and one to the person mentioned in the link above (who is more of a neuro-/psycho-linguistics person). That request was approved, but their original Phon candidate chose another offer over them. So on the assumption that the Phon position still exists, this search is not over.

Four candidates have been invited for campus interviews.

When and how did the notice go out? Congrats to those with invites.
