Word on the street[]

Post your questions here, so we can have all our inquiries in one spot.

  • Any word on the phonology & syntax positions at the U of Ottawa? (07/01/14)
  • Any word on Yale post-doc (syntax/semantics) position?
    • Yes, they've decided not to hire anyone. I just got an email. (2014/06/16)
  • Would anyone object to making names public on the wiki once an offer has been accepted? It would be nice to know who is ending up where, and it'll basically be public information anyway in a short amount of time. I've taken the liberty of pasting the name after Rutgers, since it was public already. Thoughts?
    • I second this idea. It would be nice to follow up on who's going where. (x2)
    • I'm in favor of this in theory, but I think a bit of cautioun is in order. I do not think it is appropriate to advertise that a position has been accepted, or make a name public, until the school itself and the candidate agree that it is okay to do so. This job season, I learned (over the internet) that a position for which I'd had a campus visit had been offered to and tentatively accepted by someone else. It was a full three weeks between when I learned this online and when the school called to inform me personally. No harm, no foul, in the sense that I had other offers and the info actually simplified my decision-making process. Unfortunately, however, the timing also affected how I felt about the school in question, the department, and even the people with whom I had interviewed: that I learned through the internet something that I think should have been conveyed first in person (either via phone or email) made me perceive them as discourteous and unprofessional.
      • Many schools are bound by arcane HR rules or other policies that prevent committees from communicating as openly as they would prefer. The wiki largely exists as an informal way to sharing this information when the committees cannot (or will not).  That said, I agree that the candidate names should not be posted here unless the school and/or the candidate have publicly released that information in some way.
  • Any word on the Hampshire position? Was an offer accepted?
    • An offer was made and accepted.
  • Any news on the Edinburgh Bilingualism/Ling position (3/2/2014)?

    • Job search suspended, no offer made.

    • an offer has been made but not yet accepted
    • email rejection (2/17)
  • Any word on the U de Montréal position (application deadline on 11/04)? I was told review of applications was under way mid-January. Any more recent news?
    • Campus visits are ongoing
  • Has anyone heard from UW-Stevens Point (1/29/2013)
