University College Cork: Postdoctoral Researcher in Digital Humanities with the CIPHER: Hip Hop Interpellation Team (2 yr)[]

  • Deadline: 31 May 2022
  • A Post-Doctoral Researcher post in Digital Humanities is available at the Department of Music in the School of Film, Music, and Theatre at University College Cork. The position is funded by the European Research Council and are associated with the research project CIPHER: Hip Hop Interpellation. This study of global hip hop knowledge flows will synergize ethnographic and digital humanities methods to examine how hip hop “unlocks the global through the local.” The researcher will work closely with the Principal Investigator, J. This CIPHER Map will be a user-friendly interactive web-based world map complete with search functions, user submissions, and moderation. The successful candidate will show an ability to manage the data and visualization sides of the project.
  • In the Application Letter, candidates are expected to outline how their interests and skills align with the CIPHER project – namely, how they might attend to the particular challenges that websites like Genius.com, Shazam.com, WhoSampled.com, and others have approached in the last decade—and how they might further develop and extend those solutions.

Word on the Street[]

Has anyone heard from Swarthmore about the visiting asst. Prof position in linguistics? --I know someone who was interviewed for the position (long-listed).

Has anyone heard from Northwestern? I haven't seen anything, but it's been ~1 month since the application deadline. -- I contacted them to ask what was up on Feb 15, and they said they are currently forming their long list. ---- 3/4: a friend inquired about the status of their application, and was told that "finalists" had been selected.

Any news from Georgia? Have they scheduled campus/final-round interviews? -- https://twitter.com/lingdustin/status/1491850252688982017?s=20&t=8ePjRN2GArXu5vr-olJhug

Any news from California State University Northridge (language policy and planning, contact linguistics, bilingualism) or University of Texas at El Paso (bilingualism)? -- I heard that CSUN is scheduling long-list interviews (2/10)

Any news as to whether OSU (semantics/pragmatics) has a shortlist? They conducted Zoom interviews in December, but have heard nothing since then. -- Campus invites have been extended (Jan 24)

Any news out of either Yale or UBC (computational positions)? I haven't seen either discussed here, but it's been about four-six weeks since the application deadlines. --I haven't heard anything (Jan 17) --A colleague was invited for a first-round interview for the Yale position (Feb 5)

Has anyone heard from UCSC Syntax? --Had a zoom interview 12/6, but nothing since. -- Are the colloquia listed on the homepage (but not in the calendar, or the colloquium page) job talks?

Has anyone heard from Baruch College CUNY? --Baruch has scheduled campus interviews for end of Feb. -- > Did they go straight to short-list interviews? -- no, they also had a long list

Has anyone heard from Montclair?

Has anyone heard from Ohio or San José State? -- Ohio State is conducting Zoom Interviews. >> Official rejection from OSU: 1/24. -- San Jose State phone interview notifications have been sent out: 2/4

Has anyone heard from U Toronto Mississauga (General linguistics with expertise on Chinese linguistics)?

Has anyone heard from Mississippi, Montclair or Illinois? -Mississippi State (phonetics) held virtual interviews the week of 12/13. Has anybody heard about campus visits? -> Colleague got an invite for a campus visit to Mississippi State in February.

Has anyone received (or heard about) campus visit invites for Michigan? (open-field; focus on social justice?) -Got rejection email 12/17.

Has anyone heard from Harvard (syntax)? // How about their Phonetics & Phonology search, any updates? - 12/17 got interview invitation (syntax). no (phonetics) 1/11. got rejection email after screening interview (Syntax) 1/12

Has anyone heard from any Applied Linguistics jobs?

Has anyone heard from University of South Florida (Applied Linguistics)? No... - a colleague has. They are interviewing this week. -12/09 -Got rejection email 12/14.(x2)

Has anyone heard from Illinois or Stanford? - Received long list interview request from Stanford on 12/12 -Has anyone heard from Stanford since?

12/28: Illinois is sending out invites mid/late January and going straight to campus visits for top candidates.- Does this mean these short list invites have already gone out? -> From what I've been told (I did not apply to this job, but know people on the committee), nothing has happened yet. They are skipping long list interviews and will send out invites to around 5 top candidates to come to campus. Aiming to send them out in mid-january.

Has anyone heard from Georgetown? - had zoom interview 12/13

Has anyone heard from University of South Carolina (Assistant Professor of Creole Language Studies)?

Has anyone heard from San Bernadino after 10/08? --> Also heard from them for letters 10/08 but nothing after. -> same! --> Received a call on 11/19 to schedule long list interview.

Has anyone heard from UBC? Interview requests for long listed candidates have gone out [11/02]. Any recent news?

Have not heard from Michigan myself, but a colleague has, so I think long list interview requests have gone out. - Received rejection on 6/12/21.

Has anyone heard from USC ? (AP of Phonology, Deadline : Oct 31 2021) --> nope; letters were requested from reccommenders around 11/10, but unsure if that's standard for everyone or if that indicates any kind of internal list-making... --> interview request on 12/13/21 (presumably long-list) --> Received rejection 1/7/2022; Received invitation 1/10

Received rejection from UCLA (fieldwork) after initially making the long list. I assume this means they have made their short list for campus interviews.

UCLA (phonetics) the shortlist has been made.

Has anyone heard from Queens (Cultural Communications)? No... - I haven't heard ANYTHING from them. I am assuming interviews for this position have already happened?

Still no word from Queens?

Has anyone heard from Grinnell College about the 2-year Visiting Assistant Prof position? --> I heard that someone has been offered, and accepted, that position.
