MLA JIL 12/24/14

Deadline: Jan. 15 2015 (review begins)

Request for additional materials:

Rejection (no interview):

Preliminary interview scheduled (please specify: MLA, phone, Skype, etc.): 1/15, (<-really? preliminary interview scheduled on the day they begin reviewing files? x4 for bemusement); 1/23 (via e-mail), 1/23 (via phone)

  • Internal candidate? Might explain why it had such a small window? x2 for same suspicion
  • I wouldn't jump to conclusions (says a non-applicant). Catholic has an impressive network with medievalists, and it is likely they got several top applicants as soon as they posted the job.  So, while they may have reviewed other candidates starting on the 15th, I'd imagine they also had one or two top contenders already by that day.
  • I agree with ^.  It's perfectly possible to read applications as they come in and know whom you want to interview by the time the application deadline arrives.  And it makes sense that CUA would want to stay on the same schedule as the schools that interviewed at MLA.
  • Yes, but...1/15 was not a deadline per se; it was the date on which review of files would begin. Is the implication, then, that applications received shortly after that start date would not be reviewed--that the interview list was already set as of 1/15? If so, that would seem to cut out a lot of the applicant pool, especially since the ad had only been up for a couple of weeks. It is a rather busy time of year for applicants who have interviews.
  • It looks like they're continuing to schedule interviews.  There's no need always to assume the worst about search committees.

  • Question(s) for previous commenter: are these letters in addition to the ones submitted in the original application? And did they contact via email/phone? [12/02]
  • To above: I was using Interfolio to upload the letters originally, but it seems that they did not query the Interfolio addresses given until today. The contact was via e-mail.
  • I can maybe cast some light on the letters. One of my recommenders tried to submit his letter to Dickinson via the electronic prompt, but realized that it did not go through correctly. He e-mailed the head of department a couple of days ago to resend my letter. This may have caused them to realize that other people had problems and solicit copies of the letters they were missing.
  • Question: Can anyone comment on the "short list" remark above? Has anyone been told specifically that they've been shortlisted?

[posted Mon 11/10/14]: Hello candidates,

I’m Laura Miller, the eighteenth centuryist at West Georgia. I’m on the 20th/21st/Anglophone search committee but this information applies to the medieval search as well so I'm posting here. I am writing to give you a heads-up that Interfolio submission to our positions will close this Friday so that search committees have enough time to review applications and meet to discuss interviews. We will contact interviewees in early December. So if you have been waiting to send in an application, I thought I’d come by the wiki and let you know in advance.

Best wishes and good luck on the market.
