The Department of English invites applications for two faculty positions in Medieval Literature and Modern Studies (Rank open). The successful candidate will have a minimum of three years’ experience teaching college-level courses with a commitment to lower-division teaching. Requirements: (1) Ph.D. in English or a related field preferred by the time of the appointment begins; (2) ability to teach introductory survey courses and writing classes. We are seeking qualified faculty committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service. Experience in the American educational system is preferred. The American University of Kuwait (AUK) is a private university in Kuwait organized on the U.S. model of undergraduate liberal arts education. The medium of instruction is English. The University is accredited by the Council for Private Universities of the Kuwait Ministry of Higher Education. AUK also has a Memorandum of Understanding with Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH. Location: Lewiston, Maine
Open Date: Sep 4, 2019 The Program in Classical and Medieval Studies, Bates College in Lewiston Maine, invites applications for an approved Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Classical and Medieval Studies (300-1500 CE) to begin August 1, 2020. We are particularly interested in candidates with significant interdisciplinary training who can teach a broad range of topics, such as the history and culture of Late Antiquity and medieval societies and/or the interactions of Western European, Byzantine and Islamic cultures. The candidate will also be expected to teach introductory medieval and/or classical Latin, although we do not assume prior classroom experience in teaching language. Candidates with demonstrated success in teaching marginalized and underrepresented students are especially encouraged to apply. Research and teaching areas are open, but we welcome scholars who interrogate existing methodological and theoretical orientations of Medieval Studies to examine issues of equality, power, difference, and identity; who work in Digital Humanities; or who consider links between the past and the contemporary world.
The annual teaching load is five semester courses. The successful candidate will develop a curriculum that complements the existing curricular and scholarly strengths of the Classical and Medieval Studies Program, and those of the Department of History. Responsibilities include a one-semester survey of medieval history, upper-division thematic courses, senior thesis advising, and some Latin instruction—medieval and/or classical. Alternatively, Koine or Byzantine Greek will be considered. Responsibilities may also include a course on historical methods.

Position We invite applications for a tenure-track position in Medieval literature with a secondary teaching expertise in Early Modern literature. Scholars with comparative or transnational approaches, or theoretical interests in race, gender, sexuality, or disability studies are especially encouraged to apply. The appointee will be expected to teach a range of courses in all areas of the English and Comparative Literature majors, at the upper-division and graduate (M.A.) levels, as well as lower-division, introductory, and general education courses. Of particular importance will be the ability to teach Chaucer, Shakespeare, and British literature survey courses, along with advanced studies in medieval literature in English and transnational perspectives. Faculty generally teach 3 classes per semester. A reduced teaching load is provided for the first two years. Evidence of an active research program and high-quality teaching is required.
CSUF faculty are committed teacher/scholars who bring research and creative discovery to life for students in classrooms, labs, studios, and individually mentored projects. They teach broadly in the curricula of their departments, advise students, and serve on departmental and university-wide committees. The person in this position will also be responsible for producing scholarship / creative work commensurate with the requirements for tenure. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to and participate in the life and development of the department, advise students, serve on committees, and participate in the broader university and disciplinary communities.

Durham University (EU:UK:Eng) - Assistant Professor in Medieval Literature[]
The Department of English Studies at Durham University seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor in Medieval Literature (Grade 7 or 8). The successful candidate will have research and teaching interests in the field of later medieval literature and culture, as well as the ability to teach Old English language and literature and the history of the language. Applications are particularly welcome from candidates with interests in the history of ideas and in the intersections of medieval literature with other discourses and periods. This might include the connections of medieval literature with medieval science, philosophy, medicine, psychology and/or visual culture, with cognitive studies, and/or with later literature and culture. An ability to contribute to transhistorical research themes and to teaching in other periods will also be welcome. The successful candidate will join and contribute to a department with existing strengths in many aspects of medieval literature and culture, including romance, Arthurian literature, early Middle English and Old Norse.
The successful candidate will be able to provide evidence of outstanding research potential and/or achievement in any area of the literature and culture of the medieval period and will be expected to develop undergraduate and postgraduate modules reflecting their research specialism, as well as to teach broadly on the Department’s curriculum as appropriate. 2/27: They filled the position. They are now conducting campus visits for a generalist position and seem to be drawing from the pool of candidates from the medievalist search.
James Madison University (USA: VA) - Assistant Professor of English, Medieval Studies[]
The Department of English at James Madison University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professorship in Medieval Studies, to begin in fall 2020. We are especially interested in candidates whose work engages digital humanities and/or the Global Middle Ages. Secondary fields may also include the environmental humanities, manuscript studies, and/or women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, among other fields.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach introductory survey courses in early British literature serving the General Education curriculum, as well as upper-level undergraduate and graduate (MA) courses in medieval literature as well as their research focus. The English faculty does not teach freshman composition. This position carries a 3/2 teaching load. The Ph.D. is required in hand by the summer of 2020.
The department is especially interested in qualified candidates who have a demonstrated commitment to building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. The English Department at Oklahoma State University seeks to hire a tenure track assistant professor in British Literature and culture, pre-1500. We are seeking applicants for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in global medieval literatures beginning August 2020. Given Geneseo's mission to embrace diversity and pluralism and to encourage global awareness and engagement, we welcome applicants who will challenge and complicate student assumptions about the Middle Ages. The successful candidate will enable the English Department to offer courses in medieval literatures that incorporate global perspectives, will contribute to Geneseo's interdisciplinary Medieval Studies minor, and will expand the humanities general education requirement.
The department consists of eighteen full-time faculty who teach courses in literature, creative writing, comparative literature, and film studies, as well as staffing courses in American Studies, Women's and Gender Studies, and Black Studies. English faculty typically teach 4-credit courses, alternating each year between a 2-2 and a 2-3 load.

NOTES: Can someone from the search committee confirm whether there is/or is not an "inside" candidate, or whether this is/or is not a job created for an existing Visiting position? A basic search of faculty reveals there to be current VAP that would, on paper, fit this call.
Yeah I saw that too. Definitely a "bad look" either way––if it is a sham job ad, imagining having to be the inside candidate in the end, and having to work with people who put you through a national search only to hire you anyway? Imagine if at best there's just a lack of honesty about it all or myopia about the market, then imagine being the person already there and feeling invested via the labor already put into the curriculum, working with students, colleagues, etc., only to have the rug pulled from under you? I hope the best situation is that maybe someone left, they could only get a VAP line for an interim period, and now this is the real job ad. I do wish there was more transparency though. I'd applaud the committee that would straight up say, "Hey, the situation is this..."

The Department of English at the University of Houston invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in medieval literature. Applicants should demonstrate research and teaching expertise in the works of Geoffrey Chaucer and a broad range of non-Chaucerian Middle English texts, Arthurian texts, continental medieval literatures and knowledge of languages most relevant to the study of English medieval literature in its European context: Latin, Old French, German. The successful candidate will have a strong, developing research profile, with an established publication record; they will also have evidence of effective teaching, with possible nods to classes with community-based research, digital platforms, or innovative pedagogical designs.

The English Department at Rowan University seeks applicants for a tenure-track position specializing in global medieval literatures, with secondary teaching strengths in early modern British literature. The Faculty of English Language and Literature, in association with Jesus College and Oriel College, is seeking to appoint a Departmental Lecturer. This is a 1-year fixed-term teaching and research appointment in English Literature, with a core focus on medieval literature. The purpose of the post is to cover the Faculty and College teaching of Dr Marion Turner, who will be on research leave funded by the Leverhulme Trust. It is anticipated that the appointee will take up their post on 1 January 2020.
The postholder will be expected to provide 8 hours of undergraduate tutorial teaching per week for the College, and up to 16 hours of Faculty lectures or classes per year. The Faculty teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate lecturing on Troilus and Criseyde (the set commentary text) in particular. The postholder will also undertake dissertation supervision, examining, and the normal duties of a college tutor, including admissions.
The successful candidate must possess or be near to completing a doctorate in medieval English Literature or a related field and must have experience of undergraduate teaching and possess excellent interpersonal and organisational skills. They should also have a research and publication record, appropriate to their career stage, in English literature.
