So someone else should be getting a call soon. <--I'm not holding my breath for this call, but thanks for posting, and congrats on your job! (From what I hear Framingham has some real issues, so well done you!)
Rejection (after campus interview):
Offer made: Offer made and declined (3/6)

NOTES:
Has anyone else ever heard of a request for a teaching DVD? I suppose that means they'd rather not bring anyone to campus for a teaching demonstration.
- I know someone who was shortlisted last year for a world lit job, and they still had campus visits for the position even with the DVD request.
Any updates?
- 2/10: In the last e-mail exchange I had just after Christmas, I was told they would decide who they will invite to the campus by the end of January. I have not heard anything.
- 2/10: Same here.
- 2/12: Not invited for campus interview via e-mail
- 2/14: No invitation & no email (after finalist status). So I assume I'm in the same boat as you--but did you inquire, or just receive the e-mail? Thanks! (x2)
- 2/15: I inquired via e-mail. Received a nice, fairly long and apologetic response within an hour. So at least it was a classy and heartfelt rejection and not a form note.
- 2/15: Ah. I wouldn't give them too much credit for that, though. They ask A LOT from finalists--to make a video for them when most people, even if they are teaching, have only a week or 2 left in the semester, to produces specialized syllabi, etc. And THEN they can't be bothered to send a polite note to candidates who have done all this (often at great trouble to themselves and others I might add--not everyone is a videographer, or had equipment/skilled people on hand). It's really a little much to begin with, and they seem to have no sense of this--or of how their school and department look as a result. (But that said, I'm glad you got a prompt and apologetic response.)
- 2/16: Hey, I hear you. It was the biggest pain in the a** application. And I'm not a videographer. It took me days. Let's hope this is not the way of the future for applications.

NOTES:
Does anyone know if candidates need to send a dissertation abstract with this application? I don't see this mentioned in any of their job ads, but Interfolio is asking for one.
Yeah, I just saw that too. I'm assuming that perhaps "dissertation abstract" was implicitly contained in the word "dossier" in the job ad (though usually I just take that to mean LORs). In any case, if they're asking for it on Interfolio, I'll assume it's required.
The more I look into this job, the more it seems like a potential inside hire. There is a modernist studies VAP who fits this ad who also appears to have ties to another faculty member in the dept. Is this a fake search?
- If so, at least they did the nice thing and made the application free!
- These days VAPs rarely turn into permanent positions at elite schools like Swarthmore, even if the VAP in question "appears to have ties to" someone on the tenure track. Sorry, but "fake searches" don't often happen at this level and when they do, you're unlikely to find out by just Googling around.
Any word on this?
- None here (12/14)

- Note: Based on 4 reports of requests in 10 minutes on a holiday weekend in the US, I would assume this request was sent to all applicants and is more of an "acknowledgment" than a "request for additional materials."
- -- According to the discussion below, perhaps HR has given the applications a once over and are selecting a wide swath of applicants to send references, based most likely on meeting HR requirements.
-- Question: I logged into my account and hit "send" next to my letters (the send box was lit up). These are linked email addresses to my Interfolio account letters. NOTES:
Unlike other application sites, this one doesn't appear to automatically request letters from Interfolio when the links are entered (at least, it didn't for me). Is this everyone's experience? I'm assuming they'll either ask for the ones they want upon review (or ask for all of them together when the apps are in--but then why not just do it automatically?). But this seems weird (though at $4 a pop now for Interfolio letters, maybe considerate as well...) Has everyone had the same experience with the site? Thanks!
- A: This was my experience too. I assume they will request letters from their long-list.
- A: I actually contacted the HR department. In prior experiences with the Microsoft App platform, the pending request on the Interfolio site had always populated within an hour of submission. Indeed, the word from HR is that they only push the request button after the first culling.
- Can someone explain the above please? I too entered the information for my references, but that is all I could do. Will UMass send out an e-mail request to the recommenders if one makes the first cut?
- A: Apparently, yes.

PhD. should be in hand at time of appointment.
