  • 12/10 - I wouldn't jump to the "fake search" conclusion. They're probably trying to get as much done on this search as possible before winter break. I'd assume that teaching videos would be reviewed in a later round. It is surprising, though, to hear of actual rejections so quickly - many schools keep the pool of applicants available for as long as possible.
  • 12/10 - In that sense, it's sort of refreshing that they'd actually send rejections, since so many searches ghost all the candidates until well after they're out of the running...
  • 12/10 - I agree, I'd rather just know right away rather than clicking "refresh" on this wiki every hour. (The last search committee I was on, I remember being explicitly told by HR that we could not officially "reject" anyone until the search closed.)

  • 12/12 University of Chicago: does anyone know what is going on there? Why do they have searches at every level?
    • 12/13 - Wondering the same thing (have heard rumors/warnings about turnover and departmental instability, but don't have specifics). Currently, the UChicago Composition faculty consists solely of Augusta Read Thomas and this year's post-doc, Felipe Tevao-Honar. Sam Pluta, formerly on faculty and director of CHIME Studio, has been appointed Associate Professor of Computer Music at Peabody, following his wife Sky Macklay's hiring last year. This appointment appears to be an internal negotiation, substituting for Peabody's announced search for Adjunct Computer Music Teacher. So, the UChicago Assistant Professor search, preferring "advanced fluency with electronic music techniques," will replace Sam Pluta. The Associate/Full Professor search may be a modified repeat of last year's failed [Assistant/Associate] search. The Post-Doc has been annually renewed since 2017.
    • 12/19 - my understanding was that there are two searches because two composers (Anthony Cheung and Sam Pluta) have left in the past year or two, both because other institutions offered them spousal hires. Maybe this is a lesson to UChicago admin about what they should do if they want to retain faculty.
    • 12/19a - The "UChicago admin" is not going to learn a lesson from faculty taking another job. They don't need to "retain" faculty. The University of Chicago is one of the best schools in the entire world. It is greater than any single faculty member. The great universities are always in competition with each other at levels much more complex than what happens with individual faculty. It's delusional to think that Chicago, or any school for that matter, needs to do a spousal hire to get an outstanding person for the job. And to be frank: are the positions these two people left for (Brown and Peabody) "better" than Chicago? No, they're not. Never underestimate the harshness of universities and academics.

I think none of us have underestimated the harshness of universities and academics, just that people have run the calculation and decided they would rather not, thanks.

  • Belmont University: It's a rather interesting sociological phenomenon seeing how on this wiki there's a yearly massive controversy about topics related to gender and race, but not a single person complains whenever a post like this emerges, a job ad that shows blatant discrimination based on religious beliefs. I attribute this event to the fact that this wiki is almost entirely US-centered, a country with normalized behaviors towards exclusion when it comes to adhering to a particular (the majoritarian Judeo-Christian) religion. I would love nevertheless to hear opinions from my American colleagues.
    • US-based composer here. Unfortunately, private colleges and universities here can use religious affiliation for hiring criteria. It stinks, but it is allowed. This is not allowed at public universities, so 300+ applicants gravitate to those jobs that do not promote this kind of discriminatory practice.
    • There's a few issues here. One is that religion is a choice and race/gender isn't, so it's legal to openly discrimate like this, as morally abhorrent as it is. But more importantly, the people that post on here about race and gender are always parroting conservative viewpoints, and their favorite Republicans also promote the same evangelical nonsense that these schools espouse. It really has little to do with most mainstream Christianity, and certainly not with any Judaism: these schools specifically operate within the American tradition of right-wing evangelical proto-fascism. And the adherents who benefit from this are also the ones most opposed to "wokeness." One can only wish that these schools would go the way of Grove City College and reject all federal funding if they're going to maintain these obscene sorts of practices.
    • I can only speak for myself. I have no desire to work at one of these "Christian" schools because they're all terrible. On the other hand, many of the most elite institutions in the country are jobs that interest me and reflect my own training and skill set. Tragically, these same institutions have often been pressured into prioritizing a couple specific races and sex over qualifications, artistry, and experience. We see this movement increasing even more openly in some of the postings this year. I'm not a conservative in any way; I just don't support discrimination and/or elimination based on race and sex, which is what's happening in so many searches in recent years.
    • Oh goodness, this old chestnut again: "Tragically, these same institutions have often been pressured into prioritizing a couple specific races and sex over qualifications, artistry, and experience." There are tons of people who aren't white men that are highly qualified and do good work, and I say this as a white male. I can't think of anyone in the past several years who won a job simply because they were a "diversity hire," with one possible exception that I won't go into details about (there were also other shady things going on with that search). I understand the frustration of not getting a job (I've given up at this point since I'm 14 years out of my Ph.D.), but to say that people are getting hired simply because the fit a specific profile is ridiculous. There are just too many highly qualified people of all shades and makes, and too few jobs, for this argument to make any sense. And hell, does anyone actually expect to get hired at an "elite" institution? Finally, and unfortunately, experience means nothing. Ageism, along with the financial privilage to play the game, is the elephant in the room that nobody wants to talk about. I can think of many people aside from myself who have loads of teaching experience, have received numerous commissions (yes, actual commissions), have pubilshed in good journals, won grants, etc., but nobody will touch them because they are older and aren't present at every conference because they can't afford to go. Add to that the numerous people who got stuck in the adjunct grind (god forbid at a community college-GASP!) for a number of years, and continued doing it because they love teaching, all the while being active in the field. Look, academia is broken, and nobody really wants to talk about how or why. But to say that well qulified people are being passed over for jobs at elite institutions because they would rather hire an underqulified minority, woman, furry, whatever, is insane.
      • Replying to this. It isn't easy to be sure, and the whole situation is unfortunate. I can certainly assert that there is nobody to blame for not getting a position in 2021. Anyone with a doctorate degree deserves a full time job. The increasing reality of the past decade or so is that some institutions provide a helping hand in terms of achievements for students, while others still expect some recognition on a wider field. It's impossible to determine how a committee will react to an achievement's value, especially if what can be given by an institution (directly or underhandedly) appears better than anything that could be gained outside of it. Comparing someone 5 years out of school with someone just out of school is like comparing apples with oranges, I am sure. And yes, there is a lot of denial about the problems, but I'm certain that most committees know right from wrong. We can't really say what they will do, however. Academics tend to be very skilled at coming up with premises that fit the way they view the world, for better or worse. It's human nature, really. Thank you for once again bringing awareness to a problem in academia that needs solving. Best of luck to you. And yes, I do respect the beliefs of others, and that is important to the way I live. I can respect the need of institutions to hire individuals who support their specific religious mission, and get a job somewhere else. Imposing my views on them, or being a bad example to them and their students would be disrespectful. I think everyone is happier that way.

  • 1/6 For those who have made it to/past the interview stage, what kinds of additional materials have been solicited (besides letters of recommendation) and what kinds of tasks were you asked to performed during your interview? e.g. classroom teaching (theory)? master class (composition)? lecture presentation on your creative or scholarly interests? I am new to the job market (recent Composition PhD, with secondary qualifications in Theory) and have only observed searches from a student perspective within my own institutions. I am especially curious about the expected subject matter (whether given or chosen) for teaching demonstrations in theory and the amount of prep time beforehand.
    • To answer 1/6's question, I have been asked to provide work samples (scores and audio/video), course descriptions and syllabi for classes I would like to develop, and teaching evaluations from students. I have had two finalist interviews for comp-only jobs and two for theory/comp jobs. For all of them I gave a presentation about my music and for all of them I gave composition lessons to students with faculty watching. For the theory job interviews I taught a normally-occuring theory class for one session, so I was given whatever topic was on the instructor's syllabus that day. For the amount of prep time, I think they should give you at least a week of warning, usually multiple weeks. I would say start prepping as soon as you know what the topic is and over-prepare so you're super confident.

    • I think that the prep-time should be proportional to what's at stake (if a tenure-track job, and if tenure is ultimately granted, then a life time of full-time income with benefits totalling $1-$2 million or so over a life time, depending on the institution, location, etc.) SO: come prepared to your job interview. Of course you can't anticipate every student question or interaction and might have to improvise some of the time (the same of course goes to the interview portions with committees and administrators and chats with students, where you need to prepare but might also haver to improvise). It's really in the committee's best interest to put you at ease and see you perform at your best--if they're not out of their mind--but on your end, PLEASE COME PREPARED.

My question about prep time was worded ambiguously but meant with reference to a teaching demonstration in theory, i.e. how much advance notice a committee might provide with respect to a given topic. (The post above suggests a week+, which is good to know).
  • 1/10 This is a question especially for people who have been on a search committee before. I've noticed a bunch of listings that list an application deadline but also say "review of applications starts immediately". In these cases, is there any benefit to getting an application in well before the deadline as opposed to just before it?
    • 1/25: Nope. I've been on a bazillion search committees and it's never made any difference when someone submits their materials, as long as they're in hand by the deadline. Now: reference letters are another thing. I don't know how you can suss out who's going to get their letter in by the deadline, but we have had borderline cases where we say "damn, if only we had the letter from [faculty member], it would really help us decide..."
    • 1/25a: Agreed. Have been on one search committee (for a performer) and files were not released to the committee until a few days after the deadline. The chair might have had access, but I doubt many HR departments would allow this. I can't speak directly to those "review begins immediately" jobs, but as a busy faculty member, there's no way I'm spending weeks on the edge of my seat looking at apps as they come in if I know there's a deadline in the future before which no decisions will actually be made.
  • 1/15 SUNY Buffalo recently posted an opening for a "Clinical Assistant Professor" non-tenure track job. With the increasing number of non-tenured lines, is it time for mass action, namely refusing to apply to posts that don't offer tenure. No more adjuncts, no more visiting, no more "clinical", no more period. We deserve better, and without us (the workers), the universities can't operate. Mass action. Shut them down. Make them beg. If Starbucks and Krogers workers can take action and improve their lives, why can't people armed with PhDs?
  • 1/18: 1/15, Labor relations in academia are a most worthy topic for serious conversation. I would just like to point out a couple of things: 1) There is a sharp difference between temporary gigs, adjunct gigs, visiting lectureships etc., vs. long-term, continuing lectureships (not sure how the specific posting that you mentioned works, I am just giving some general information on the topic as I understand it). The latter can be full time, with benefits, with an option for promotion (lecturer-->senior lecturer or some other title), though with no tenure at any stage---the exact length of contracts etc. might vary widely between institutions, so ask a lot of questions and read advertisements very carefully, and also look at faculty handbooks and HR documents. Good continuing lectureships might even be more desirable for some PhDs---academic laborers--who would rather teach more courses and have no expectations for research productivity like publications for a theorist or high-profile creative stuff for a composer. 2) There is of course no guarantee that a temporary gig would lead to a tenure-track or good lectureship gig in the future, but if it's a stepping stone for a better job, then it might be the right thing to do to accept a temporary gig / adjunct gig for a year or two (or for as long as one is able to play this game and stay happy). So just going on a national strike of the type that you describe (anti-all-non-tenure-track jobs) may not be the right thing to do. Also, I wouldn't assume that---if all job applicants go on this type of national strike---universities would create tenure lines or continuing, good lecturer positions to replace exploitative adjunct positions and the like. They might simply increase teaching loads for tenured faculty or find other creative solutions. Another consideration: Kroger and Starbucks employees during the pandemic have more bargaining power than academics, for a variety of reasons---labor shortages, government stimulus money, and the like. It is of course very positive that---for a change--employers have to compete for employees and entice them to work. With the over-production of PhDs respective to available good positions (tenure-track jobs or long-term lectureships), I am afraid that academic laborers do not have much bargaining power. This is not to say that PhDs don't all deserve tenure-track jobs----there's so much interesting and innovative work being done in music theory right now---only that it might not be a realistic prospect for academic laborers to force all academic employers to only create good tenure lines and lecturer lines (OR: per your post, create only tenure lines) and discontinue all other types of positions.
  • 1/19 (1/15 again) Thank you for your reply. I am new to the search (ABD) but also active in worker rights, and I do spend time thinking about what can be done. My advisor was hired as an ABD to his current position (a couple decades ago) and has told us that those who "make it" (his words) get hired as ABD because they represent "the cream of the crop." I'm hoping to get a post this year--there have been a couple positive signs--but I wonder whether I should also consider these non-tenure track posts. I just get the feeling that if I don't get a job right away it's over. I've also heard that we have "2 years max", after which our degrees are too old to be considered. Anyway, just sharing some of my fears anonymously here. Thanks for all the wisdom!
    • 1/21b Pessimism can be profoundly liberating, but you received terrible, outdated advice -- I'm sorry for that. I taught in K12 public schools for three years after getting my Ph.D. (2015) in theory from a good university, but not an Ivy or an Ivy-of-the-blank. I was completely out of the field for two years but went on the conference circuit my third year after deciding to reenter academia. I submitted nearly 50 applications and received one offer for a NTT assistant professor gig. Two years later, I found the TT position I'm in now. I don't consider myself to be an above-average theorist in any way. I received help from family, friends, and mentors and got very lucky. I recommend reaching out to a variety of people to get a broader perspective. I think you'll find it empowering.     • 1/21 Despite what many people think, I don't think we can generalize on what the behavior of a search committee will be, at all. From being an entrepreneur, there are certainly patterns that characterize human behavior that might provide results. But, those patterns are not fully predictable. When I put in X amount of work, I don't expect the same results each time. One of the big pitfalls of being young is that you might see people who have a certain opinion about something and not question it. As you create your research, art, etc. you have that in mind as the right way. But, not everyone thinks the way you do. Theory ped anyone? Some people don't want to rock the boat, and others do. Personality is a big factor in the study of the arts, like it or leave it. You probably want to get a job with people you get along well with.
  • 1/19b Ironically, it's the adjuncts and lecturers that I've seen most successful at creating faculty unions and boosting pay/benefits, etc.. With the way things are going in academia, non-tenure jobs are the way of the future; perhaps a longer-term contract plus unionization for job protection is a boon for today's faculty. Should we instead applaud universities replacing part-time, ephemeral gigs with long-term lecturers? Given what I've heard anecdotally about the shenanigans in tenure-track promotion and hiring practices, I'd jump for a contract (with union support). (And remember, this is how virtually every other job out there works. No one gets multi-year job guarantees in most industries. Employment is "at will.")
  • 1/19c: (Replying to 1/15) This is the first reference I've ever seen of a two-year limitation on our degrees. I received my DMA in 2018 and, while admittedly not yet having been offered a tenure-track post, have held several appointments since my ABD days as adjunct, VAP, and as of October of last year a postdoc at an institution of some renown. Furthermore, I have acquaintances who were languishing for years without any academic appointment finally strike gold and land tenure-track positions. It could be that one has a grace period of two years without any kind of appointment or scholarly/creative activity, but so long as one remains active in their field and continues to network then one will remain a viable candidate. Please don't worry and continue to remain active and apply! Eventually your efforts will bear fruit.
  • "1/18" again. A few things: 1) It might be that it's different between theory and composition--I think that theorists who land full-time (tenure-track / continuing lecturer) gigs in music theory tend to have no academic "gaps" on their resume--moving from grad school to a temporary gig and then to a more stable position (or getting hired ABD), but I have not studied this issue closely, so take it with more than a grain of salt. 2) Saying that those hired ABD are the "cream of the crop" is self-indulgent nonsense as you describe it, I'm really sorry. You can't take getting really lucky and make it into a statement about quality of work seriously. 3) There's no question that institutions would do better to rely on continuing lecturers rather than adjuncts in terms of emplolyment relations in academia, but I am not sure how these lecturer lines are born in reality (sometimes to replace older tenure lines)? From an individual's perspective, it's surely better to accept a continuing lecturer line rather than adjunct, no question. 4) Circling back to one-year or two-year positions and the like: one of the greatest nightmares of a hiring institution would be to hire an ABD and discover that all of those advisor/diss. committee promises that the "work is almost done" and the "student is on track to defend on X date" were actually false, and that instead of discharging their duties in research, teaching, (and service), the person is going to be hard at work on their dissertation while on the job. Therefore, it is safer for a hiring committee to hire someone with a PhD at hand, who is also currently teaching somewhere on a 1-year position, say. This means that the person is surely and unequivocally "done," and also that they have unequivocal independent teaching experience (though many teaching assistants teach with a great deal of independence and have good experience already). 5) This ties nicely to my next point: if you really want to talk about exploitative labor practices in academia, you also have to take into account the efforts of graduate teaching assistants. If this is an apprenticeship (borderline indentured servitude?) that leads to stable employment later, so be it, but if this is one step of a cycle that ends up in adjunct positions, then it's perhaps more difficult to justify. 6) Of course, the counter-argument (call it "neoliberal") might be that individuals enter graduate school voluntarily, often knowing that employment propsects are problematic (OR: without having done a sufficient amount of research in advance). One can also say that you can quit at any stage and that you have a lot of qualifications for many jobs, even if you don't think that you had been trained for them (see under Karen Kelsky et al.'s organizations). Surely people pursue degrees that make them look at this wiki not because they think it's lucrative, but because they have a passion for something. That's it--enough rambling. Good luck to everyone!
    • Thanks. I can add it here as well. I love positive vibes and supportive comments on here. I think how easily it will be to get out of academia largely depends on what you want to do. In some circumstances, I think it's better if you go back to school to achieve your objectives if making money and doing what you want as a career is what you desire. In any case, I have seen people get research jobs when they left academia. If you want to do music, it might actually be more problematic in some situations. Academic learning about music and working in the music field outside of institutional teaching are two different, distinct fields for composers and theorists. Some academics may not like that that is the state of things in some situations, but it's often true. Just so you know, that's going to take a while. And in some situations, it's better to shed academic attitudes that don't work. Academia doesn't always have a good reputation. I echo what was said before: good luck in whatever you do!
  • 1/21a (Replying to 1/15). I'm on the search committee for the position at Buffalo. We've seen a general increase in the number of non-TT "Clinical" positions (aka "Teaching Assistant Professors", "lecturers", etc) here over the past decade. It would be great to return to the days when there were lots of academic jobs and they were all TT, but it's unfortunately unlikely to happen any time soon. And in my opinion, these clinical positions are vastly superior to hiring fewer TT faculty and supplementing them with low-paid adjuncts. I'm not sure about elsewhere, but at UB clinical professors are treated very well: the pay is a bit lower, but comparable to TT faculty; there are good benefits (including retirement and medical insurance); clinical faculty are involved in decisions about what they'd like to teach; clinical faculty can be promoted; clinical faculty can serve on important university committees. Clinical faculty also have relatively good job security. Sure, the contracts are term-limited, but if a person is doing a good job, they should have a high degree of certainty that they'll get renewed. At UB, there's even some movement in regards to allowing tenure for clinical faculty. In my experience, the best way to make change is by advocating for it internally, on those committees and in conversation with people that make big decisions. I hope that our clinical hire at UB will be the kind of person that would do that kind of work. At the end of the day, this isn't as good as an all-TT university, but it's better than most alternatives. And so while we can, I think we should probably be doing everything possible to give as many rights and protections to clinicals as possible.
  • 2/15: Can anyone help me understand the timeline/logistics of a job listed with "review begins immediately" in place of a deadline? The only searches I've been on have had specific deadlines, so I'm having a hard time wrapping my brain around when the process starts to move in the other kind of situation. Do these committees usually have an internal deadline that they just don't publicize? Do they usually ask for additional material/etc from a number of candidates at the same time, or is it more "rolling" than that? (I know my school will not let you invite anyone for a Zoom interview before that list of semi-finalists has been vetted by HR, and likewise again for finalists for the on-campus interview -- so I assume at some point, there has to be a cut-off). Anyway, if anyone has insight on how these searches run, I'd love to learn. Thank you!
    • 3/4: At my institution (public, regional), faculty members receive a formal charge to serve on the SC from the department/school chair, and the job ad posts soon after. The SC completes training for HR (if needed), discusses desired attributes, and creates an evaluation rubric before its members begin their individual reviews. I'm currently on a SC for a non-theory/non-comp position that posted three weeks ago. Although, the ad states that "review begins immediately," we only began looking at applications yesterday. We will (informally) narrow the list to 5 or 6 candidates in two weeks, at which time we'll call references and schedule Zoom interviews. The committee will then name 3 finalists for campus visits that will take place during the second and third weeks of April. Importantly, we must continue to evaluate new applications until we've identified this list of finalists. Altogether, it will be about 8-9 weeks from posting the ad to naming finalists, and another week to make a soft offer. Searches posting closer to the end of the term will move more quickly. I was recently on a search for a NTT job that posted the last week of April. We named finalists in 4 weeks.
  • 2/25 I can't tell you how they work exactly. I would apply relatively fast (maybe within a week of the posting going out). If you are on the market and have your materials (CV, cover letter, research/teaching/diversity statements), the process of researching an institution and applying should be relatively fast, I think. (Is this a "high research/creativity position?" is this a "teaching first institution"---these are some of the things that would help you fit your cover letter etc., beyond some institutional identity stuff. If they DO have a date where "review of applications will begin on [date X]," I would apply the day before then at the latest.
  • 4/18 I think a lot of about the state academia these days. I think it's easy for academics to blame funding; I mean, it's obvious. However, I do know that the employment problems in academia are worldwide issues. There isn't a single place I can think of where academia hasn't fallen short. That being said, I think it's time for academics to stop looking outward and look inward. They should ask: how do we show that we care about academics who want jobs? I don't really see any claims to advocacy adding up to genuine care if this isn't accomplished. This is so obviously a problem. It's time to look inward and stop looking outward. If we try to uphold a music scene that is separate from the music scene outside of academia, we are going to fail sooner or later. The idea that we teach people so that they can teach never had the best math in it. We aren't keepers of the flame: we serve the people, first and foremost.
  • 4/20 I don't really understand your post. Academia is not about "care." It is about giving a small group of (relative) experts the opportunity to pursue their research and/or craft. This requires them to be at least somewhat (or perhaps largely) removed from society. I am not serving the public in my role as a composer or a teacher of composition and other music courses. I am pursuing an art that has been the focus of my existence since I was a young child. This is not related to academia, funding, the public, or anything else except it's what I want and need to do. The general public has no clue what academia or advanced arts are about.

I invite those who don't understand my point of view to find out more about it. Humans all have something worthwhile about them. Nobody is better than another person. People should be useful and serve others. This is what advocacy is all about. Those are obvious axioms in mainstream society that I'm sorry you missed.

Of course, "humans all have something worthwhile about them", but this has nothing to do with academia or the academic job process. To say "nobody is better than another person" is also irrelevant to the discussion. In fact, academia is partly about supporting some of those people who are, in fact, better in certain areas than other people. That's called expertise and achievement. That's why we have grades, juries, degrees, prizes, letters of recommendation, and all manner of output. Academia is not related to or part of "mainstream society." Quite the opposite. Have you heard of the Ivory Tower? That's the place where specialists go to pursue their work apart from mainstream society. If we rely on mainstream society, we won't have anything except fast food, pop music, and Marvel superhero movies. A rather sad world with no hope for advancement. Your thoughts seem to align more with counseling, social work, volunteer work, religious work, or similar pursuits, but not so much to do with academia or even the arts.

There is no special circumstance that ever justifies ignoring right and wrong, even in a so-called "ivory tower." I understand some of you aren't that feeling-prone and would prefer facts to feelings, so all of this is no doubt foreign. But here's the truth: most people do have feelings, most people want to feel something about art, and if nobody is benefiting we are doing except ourselves, I will not be surprised if funding keeps getting cut. This, despite the realities of academia. I'm very intentional about avoiding jobs where the values you have stated true. Many people share my point of view within academia as well, and I wish more did. I'm very happy where I am, much happier than in a cut-throat, self-serving, ego-laden environment, the very embodiment of torture for me.   • 5/31 This is my first year on the job market looking for comp/theory and comp only jobs. I notice there has only been one visiting professor opening in these categories this year (not counting the University of Pittsburgh one which seems like it should be in the comp/technology section) and that deadline was back in March. I was told to expect a last wave of visiting positions opening up late in the year after those taking new positions gave notice to their employers, but it seems this hasn't happened. Is this an unusual year in this respect? Any ideas why?
  • 6/1 There's still a little time left before that final deadline. But I haven't seen that great of a surge of openings late in the game in the past several years. In some situations, a last-minute search can be a closed-door opportunity in which a search committee does not legally need to widely advertise a short-term hire. If your faculty are well integrated into the fabric of their academic community, they might receive a request from one of those search committees and might recommend you if you have worked closely with them (a good reason to keep in touch with your former professors). Aside from those types of last-minute hires, I've noticed that purely composition or composition/theory jobs are becoming a bit more difficult to find. Technology is a big deal because it's a bridge into commercial music. Similarly, experience in film or video game scoring is becoming a common ask as is a music business class. Performance+theory/comp is big because they can let go of their adjunct faculty or reduce their workloads, and that could include directing ensembles. It's a great time to consider wearing three hats if this year's searching hasn't come to fruition--to start performing again or getting a nice electronic music/digital media portfolio together (or even better--teaching these subjects somehow, even if to a few private students). Side note: kudos to those who have contributed to the "Other Positions of Interest" category here. There have been really amazing opportunities there for those who are ready to jump ship (like me!).
  • Page Updates:
    • 2/17 Am I the only one who doesn't care how many rejections a post receives? Updating the number of candidates advancing/interviewing is important to see how many folks are potentially vying for a job, but rejections tells us almost nothing and clog up the edits on the page.
    • In my opinion, the main thing that is useful is to know is whether a search has moved on (and someone knows about it because they had some request from the search, such as a Zoom interview invitation). *2, *3, *4, or *91 is not a representative sample and does not help---there might be any number of wiki readers vying for any number of positions, but this remains pretty opaque either way. (*4 on campus invitation would indicate that there are 4 finalists, but that would require all of them to report that here, which they may well not be willing to do---exposed IP address or not).
    • I think it comes from a more "community-oriented" perspective where you are not only contributing some bit of information (even if, as you say, it's not that useful), but also feeling like part of the community. As one who has used this wiki to get jobs over the last few years, I am beyond grateful for it. I want to contribute in any way I can because so many others have done that, which in turn helped me. You're not wrong in that knowing if 3 people got rejected vs. 2 people is somewhat useless for us as readers. But perhaps it helps the person make it final for themselves by adding it.

What it does give me is a general idea of how many people are using this page and finding it helpful. I also moderate the Piano wiki but aside from me posting jobs, it gets almost no updates from candidates, so I think I probably won't bother with that one next year.
