Capital University: Assistant Professor of Music History and Theory

The Conservatory of Music at Capital University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty member as Assistant Professor of Music History (primary) and Theory (secondary). The successful candidate will have significant experience and a documented record of success as a teacher at the collegiate level. Salary is Assistant Professor level and dependent on the candidate's experience and qualifications. This is a 9-month contract beginning in Fall 2023.
Major responsibilities: The successful candidate should be prepared to teach The History of Western Music I and II, Introduction to Music and Listening, Musicianship I and Audiation I. The department defines Sound Studies as a hybrid area of research that is at the intersection of musicology, ethnomusicology, music analysis, digital audio technology, acoustical research, and contemporary sound design.

University of Notre Dame: Associate/Full Professor, Sacred Music Program Director, Musicology

The University of Notre Dame seeks a music historian, appointable at the level of associate or full professor, with tenure, who will direct Notre Dame's Graduate Program in Sacred Music. The person appointed to this position will have a distinguished record as a scholar, a gift for and interest in teaching graduate students, and successful experience in or a strong aptitude for administrative work and collaboration within the arts. Knowledge of the musical and liturgical traditions of some period within the history of the Roman Catholic Church, and/or an understanding of contemporary issues regarding music and liturgy within the Church is essential.
Affiliated faculty, most of whom are also appointed in the departments of Music and/or of Theology, work with the Director of SMND to design the curriculum, manage the choral ensembles, and maintain musical instruments and facilities. The Director of SMND shares the responsibility with the Chair of the Department of Music for O'Neill Hall of Music and Sacred Music (opened in 2018), including its concert venues, classrooms, and other spaces. O'Neill Hall also houses a full-service music library. The Director reports to the Dean of the College of Arts and Letters, liaises with the development officer within the College, manages the SMND budget, and is a member of both the Dean's Committee of Deans, Chairs, and Directors, and of the Provost's Committee for Departments Chairs/School Liaisons/Program Directors.
The Director works in close partnership with the Chair of the Department of Music and with the professional staff of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart to sustain the vibrant musical life now flourishing at the University of Notre Dame. The Director also meets regularly with the Director of the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center to advance common goals. DeBartolo Performing Arts Center (opened in 2004) (https://performingarts.nd.edu) has six acoustically outstanding performing spaces, including the Reyes Organ and Choral Hall, and presents top-ranked international and national performers. O'Neill Hall and the DPAC form the core of an emerging “arts corridor” on campus.

Two previous rounds of this cluster hire initiative took place in 2020-21 and 2021-22. This Initiative is funded by the Office of the Provost. Williams College: Assistant Professor of Music

The Department of Music at Williams College announces a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor appointment in Musicology beginning in the fall of 2023.
Duties: Teach four courses each year, including a survey of European music history before 1750 for majors, introductory courses on early music, and other courses related to the candidate's interests and experience. Qualifications: Doctorate in musicology with particular expertise in any period of European music history before 1750; expertise in a secondary area that complements the strengths and interests of current faculty is especially welcome. University of Pennsylvania, Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies: 2023-24 Fellowship, The Sound and Music of Jewish Life

The Herbert D. Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania is now accepting fellowship applications for the 2023–2024 academic year on the theme of THE SOUND AND MUSIC OF JEWISH LIFE. THE KATZ CENTER is pleased to announce the theme for its 2023–24 international fellowship program—the study of sound, music, and aurality in Jewish life, past and present.
The year has two interrelated goals: 1) to promote new research into the study of the various musical cultures that have developed in Jewish contexts; 2) to encourage explorations of the role of sound in Jewish life and culture. The first goal is an effort to build on recent advances in the study of Jewish music and musical culture from a proliferation of new sources, resources, and approaches.
The second goal acknowledges the emergence of sound studies as a vital area of inquiry, an interdisciplinary field that encompasses sound- and listening-related practices, the orality of oral traditions, the aural dimensions of Jewish literature, deaf culture, the history and impact of sound-related technologies, the study of Jewish soundscapes, and the linguistic study of Jewish accents, among other potential topics.
The Center invites applications from scholars and scholar-artists pursuing research on related topics and who are willing to participate and contribute as part of a cross-disciplinary cohort. The Center is open to proposals from a variety of fields that include musicology and ethnomusicology, the history of Jewish music or sound, literature and folklore studies, the study of technology or architecture, linguistics, the study of liturgy, relevant social sciences, and other fields as they relate to Jewish studies. Though the Center cannot offer rehearsal or performance space, we are open to proposals from applicants seeking to combine scholarship with creative and/or performance-related work.
Katz Center fellows are provided with the time and resources needed to pursue their individual projects (including an office, computer, and library privileges at the University of Pennsylvania), and are also expected to actively engage in the intellectual life of the fellowship community. All applicants must hold a doctoral degree or expect to receive it by the start date of the fellowship. Fellows are expected to live in Philadelphia for the term of their fellowship.

Yale University, Institute of Sacred Music: Long-term Fellowships 2023-24

The Yale Institute of Sacred Music is an interdisciplinary center where scholars and artists engage in academic and creative work across a variety of fields at the intersection of religion and the arts. Each year the Institute brings a diverse cohort of Long-term Fellows to Yale to pursue scholarly and creative projects that connect with the mission of the Institute and are informed by various interdisciplinary perspectives. ISM Fellows are exceptional scholars and practitioners at all career stages whose projects range from studies of Buddhist chant to African American sacred music, and analyses of Medieval ritual to Jewish art. Fellows are employed as regular full-time faculty or have more than six years of related experience following the terminal degree. Postdoctoral Associates have fewer than six years of related experience following the terminal degree and are not yet employed as full-time regular faculty. NYU Abu Dhabi: Humanities Research Fellowship for the Study of the Arab World

The NYU Abu Dhabi Research Institute invites scholars who wish to contribute to the vibrant research culture of NYUAD’s Saadiyat campus to apply for a residential fellowship, starting September 2023.
The Institute welcomes applications from scholars working in all areas of the Humanities related to the study of the Arab world, its rich literature and history, its cultural and artistic heritage, and its manifold connections with other cultures. The Faculty of Arts is seeking one full-time Lecturer (Assistant Professor, in Dutch: Universitair Docent) in Popular Music, Sound and Media Cultures. Candidates should have a demonstrable record of excellence in teaching, experience in researching popular music, and exhibit knowledge of a range of analytical perspectives such as critical musicology and/or ethnomusicology and/or music sociology and/or practice-centred research approaches.
Areas of specialization are not predetermined but one or more of the following are especially of interest: hip hop, electronic dance music, rock, popular musics within and beyond the Anglo-American context, or music industry studies. We also welcome scholars specializing in music and technology within digital platforms such as modern production techniques, or the affordances of music technologies within other media such as video game sound and music, interactive and VR music videos, and AI music. Knowledge of the interrelations between popular music, new media and other arts disciplines and fields including arts criticism, film studies, theatre and performance art, and media studies is also valued.
The candidate’s research should indicate an interest in, and familiarity with a variety of contemporary theoretical approaches including critical race theory, post-colonial theory, sound and media studies, music and affect, and/or critical musicology. The candidate should also be knowledgeable of analytical models especially attuned to the most pressing issues and opportunities surrounding popular music, sound and media cultures. Research on understanding the relations between popular music institutions and local and global music scenes and communities is welcome, as are projects investigating music’s role in processes of identity formation within performance and reception contexts.

The Faculty of Arts invites applications to the Department of Philosophy, History and Art for the position of UNIVERSITY LECTURER IN MUSICOLOGY into permanent employment starting from January 1, 2023, or as agreed. The appointment starts with a trial period of six months.
The university lecturer teaches musicology in the bachelor's and master's programmes in art studies. He or she is responsible for several musicology courses, including a bachelor’s seminar. The duties also include supervision of dissertations and research work.
The university lecturer is required to teach art and popular music research and to have expertise in at least one of the following research areas: music history, music analysis, music and society research, and computational music research. The applicant's versatility in musicology and art studies expertise and teaching competence is considered an advantage. Knowledge of teaching connected to the University of Helsinki's musicology laboratory is also considered an advantage.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
An appointee to the position of university lecturer shall hold an applicable doctoral degree and be able to provide high quality teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations.
In accordance with the Government Decree on Universities (770/2009) teaching and research staff at universities are required to have proficiency in the language in which they shall provide instruction, either Finnish or Swedish. The language of instruction for this position is Finnish. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have satisfactory proficiency in Swedish and good proficiency in English as well.

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Department of Music, Art and Culture Studies is currently seeking to recruit ASSISTANT OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR (TENURE TRACK) IN MUSICOLOGY 
The employment relationship will start on January 1, 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position of the assistant professor is for a fixed term of three to five years, and the position of the associate professor is for a fixed term of five years (according to the tenure track model). At the end of the fixed-term assignment, there will be an evaluation procedure to assess the employee's qualifications for promotion to the next level (associate/full professor). 
The position will be located at the research focus areas of the department, Cognitive musicology and Music, art, cultural practices as the source of wellbeing, raising and therapy. The assistant/associate professor will work at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Music, Mind, Body, and Brain (2022–2029), nominated by the Academy of Finland.
The main duties include active research work, acquiring external research funding, and launching and implementing research projects.The duties also include tasks related to the under- and post-graduate levels and supervision of doctoral dissertations and master’s theses as well as participating in stakeholder collaboration and other activities in the university community.

University of Oslo: Doctoral/Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Complex/Experimental Musical Rhythms (Feb 2023)

A Doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO1017) or a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (SKO1352) in Complex/Experimental Musical Rhythms is available at RITMO Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Rhythm, Time and Motion at the University of Oslo.
The main goal of the project is to examine complex/experimental rhythms in popular music (e.g. jazz, EDM, hip-hop, etc.), including the listening experience and performers’ motivations. The methodological approach should include music analysis (auditory, transcription-based and/or computer-based), preferably in combination with qualitative interviews, field studies/ethnography, philosophy/phenomenology, and/or music cognition/psychology.
The project will be part of an overall thematic area focused on timing, expectations, and attention in complex rhythmic contexts.

We seek candidates whose work intersects with at least one of the specialised areas of the BENEDICAMUS project as well as its broader themes. BENEDICAMUS pursues a transformative focus on creative practices surrounding a particular moment in the Western Christian liturgy: the exclamation Benedicamus Domino (“Let us Bless the Lord”), which sounded in song several times a day from c.1000 to 1500. BENEDICAMUS undertakes the first longue durée study of musical and poetic responses to an exceptional liturgical moment, using this innovative perspective to work productively across established historiographical and disciplinary boundaries. The project encompasses half a millennium of musical and ritual activity, hundreds of musical compositions, poetic texts, and manuscript sources. It engages with the beginnings of musical and poetic genres and techniques that were crucial in shaping practices still current today, reflecting on music’s enduringly complex relationship with spirituality, ritual, and the sacred.
Successful candidates may have a disciplinary background in cultural studies, history, musicology, Latin language and/or literature, liturgy, medieval studies, renaissance studies, ritual studies, or theology. Ideally, candidates would already have experience in at least two of these fields.
Candidates are asked to provide a Project Description, in which they outline how their research record, interests, and skills align with the BENEDICAMUS project, detailing precisely their proposed research contribution(s).
The disciplinary orientation of the proposed research project is open, as is its methodological, reportorial, geographical, and chronological focus, but candidates should design and descibe a specific project that falls within the BENEDICAMUS project’s chronological purview (c. 1000–1500), furthering its overall aims and outputs.
The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary and have access to dedicated funds for research and conference travel. They will participate actively in and assist with BENEDICAMUS’s international conferences, workshops, and publications. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to live in Oslo and to engage with and develop wider research networks in the Faculty of Humanities and the Department of Musicology. This postdoctoral research fellowship aims to qualify the researcher for a future academic position.

A two-year post-doctoral research fellowship in Music, Criminology and Social Justice is available at the Department of Musicology (IMV), University of Oslo.
The position is affiliated with the research project PRISONS OF NOTE: Mapping music and nuances in penal exceptionalism from the periphery, funded by the Research Council of Norway. The successful candidate will work as part of a team led by Principal Investigator Áine Mangaoang, alongside research assistants and an international scientific advisory board. We seek candidates whose work intersects with at least one of the specialised areas of the PRISONS OF NOTE project as well as its broader themes. The post-doctoral fellow is expected to publish independently and in collaboration with the PRISONS OF NOTE team, to present research papers at international conferences, and contribute to wider public communication of the research results.
The PRISONS OF NOTE project investigates the experiences of, circumstances surrounding, and approaches to music and imprisonment in the lives of prisoners, staff, and stakeholders. It will examine the relationship between prison music – which includes music education, music therapy, music-making and listening initiatives – and the sociocultural, political, ethical and aesthetic implications of this creative practice from multiple perspectives. Using an international, comparative approach grounded in empirical research, PRISONS OF NOTE maps the nuances and asymmetries in penal exceptionalism from the smaller, peripheral jurisdictions of Norway, Iceland and the Republic of Ireland, to untangle the ways music is used – and is useful – in prison.
The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be a central member of the project team and a core contributor to Work Package 2: Supporting Music in Prisons: Prison Staff, Music Facilitators & Prison Stakeholders’ Perspectives. The aim is to provide the first nuanced and detailed understanding of the multifaceted levels of gatekeeping and politics involved in planning, delivering, facilitating, and sustaining prison music initiatives across a range of contexts (for e.g. in high, medium and open prisons, in different national milieus with varying political and economic backgrounds). The applicant is expected to detail their planned approach and methods for this research in their project description, which must be submitted as a part of the application.
The successful candidate is expected to become part of the research milieu at the Department of Musicology and participate in its working environment and development. The candidate is expected to live in the vicinity of Oslo, Norway.
The appointment is for a duration of two years. The post is available from January 1st 2023 (candidates must take up the post by May 1st 2023). A few comments from 5120j:

1. My rule of thumb for deciding which jobs to post is: "COULD an ethno/musicologist fill this post?" Not the more narrow question "WILL an ethno/musicologist fill this post?" So, this means I will post more general "humanities" jobs, and positions (mostly at small schools) looking for someone to teach music history/appreciation but also direct an ensemble/teach applied lessons/etc. (If the most important part of the job seems to be the ensemble directing/applied lessons and music history/appreciation is an add-on, I don't post it.)
2. I post almost the entire text of the job ad (except in the case of part-time/adjunct jobs) so that if any changes are made later, they can be noticed and noted. The ads also usually disappear from the institution's website after the application deadline has passed, so it's helpful to preserve them here. And it's very instructive to see how the winning candidate did and didn't fit the job as it was advertised. I do usually excise the description of the hiring school/department/facilities and the EOE boilerplate, but I leave the rest of it as-is. Removing anything more feels like editorializing on my part. Change for 2023: I am only going to post the full ad for musicology/ethnomusicology jobs and will post just a shortened version for Community College, non-US/Canada, and Miscellaneous jobs, in an effort to keep the page from getting so large and hard to edit.

An additional Winter Study term course is required every other year.
