Other things we value include: – extended experience from abroad, – combined educational background from different fields or documented research experience in both qualitative and quantitative projects, – strong academic orientation, – good presentation and teaching skills, – documented academic interests related to studying online communities.
We do not restrict the background of candidates to a particular field, as we believe that good research can be inspired and developed from different angles. However, we understand that the position may appeal particularly to people doing research in management, organization studies, sociology, anthropology, media studies, information science, or digital humanities.
We are equally interested in people apt in qualitative and quantitative approaches, with a slight preference to those, who are able to do both.
About us: NeRDS group is a highly informal, relatively young team of researchers. We follow participative decision-making principles and, if invited for an interview, you can expect being interviewed and evaluated by all members of the team, irrespective of the rank you are applying for.
We put great emphasis on internationalization and high academic standards. Over the last five years, NeRDS group members have gone on one-year research stays to Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cornell University, University of California Berkeley, or New York University, among others. We regularly publish in JCR-listed journals, and publish books in the leading academic presses (e.g. Stanford University Press, Edward Elgar, Ashgate, Routledge).
Some of us are social movements activists (and e.g. serve on the Board of Trustees of Wikimedia Foundation or are engaged in the city movements), some are involved in the start-up culture (mentoring, seed funds, developing own businesses, etc.), and we generally value bringing a diverse experience to the table.
We believe that research should be stellar solid and of high quality, but that it also should be fun. We offer flexibility, a lot of independence, and a friendly working culture. Also, our teaching load can be very generous (read: low).
NeRDS participates in the international Network of Centers.

University of Helsinki (Finland) - 3 Digital Humanities Postdocs[]
Heldig is a newly-founded Digital Humanities Centre at the University of Helsinki. The objective of Heldig is to foster the combining of computational methods in humanities and social science and study different phenomena related to digitalization. Heldig also provides teaching in digital humanities. One of the research strands in Heldig is the historical and linguistic study of public discourse, conceptual change and knowledge production.
The Faculty of Arts invites applications for THREE (3) POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHERS (DIGITAL HUMANITIES)for a fixed term period from 1 September 2017 onwards (or as agreed) for a maximum of three years. The period (1-3 years) depends of the candidate’s research plan.
We are looking for candidates with expertise on computational science, linguistics and history/cultural heritage. The three successful candidates will be members of a research community that already includes, for example, Academy of Finland’s project on “Computational History and the Transformation of Public Discourse”, 2015-2019. The data that the research community is using includes various historical full-text collections and large metadata collections, mainly in English, Finnish and Swedish. The group is particularly interested in studying conceptual change, intertextuality based on text-reuse and statistical analysis of knowledge production.
POSITION 1 POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN COMPUTATIONAL OR COMPUTER SCIENCE. We appreciate a proven track record in multidisciplinary collaboration and an aptitude for applied research and methods development in computational science. Applicant needs to have a doctorate in statistics, applied mathematics or computer science (or in a related applied field, for example, machine learning, bioinformatics, information technology, language technology). Experience in statistical programming (for example R/Python/Julia/Stan) and open science methods (for example publishing of scientific software) can be considered an advantage. The successful candidate will actively collaborate with the research group and participate in joint publications.
POSITION 2 POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN LINGUISTICS. The successful candidate will have proven expertise in multidisciplinary collaboration and research in language use in large text corpora. The candidate will contribute to the project’s interests by providing linguistic perspective in research in public discourse, conceptual changes and knowledge production from the Early Modern era to World War II. Possible backgrounds include (but are not restricted to) pragmatics, semantics, text and discourse analysis, variation studies and translation studies. Understanding and possible expertise of different possibilities of the use of computational methods in historical research should be shown in the research plan. The successful candidate will actively collaborate with the research group and participate in joint publications.
POSITION 3 POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN HISTORY OR CULTURAL HERITAGE. The successful candidate will have proven ability to function as part of a multidisciplinary research group with particular focus on public discourse and knowledge production in early modern and/or modern Europe. The candidate must also show knowledgeability in the use of computational methods in historical research. The candidate needs to have a doctoral degree from history, cultural heritage or related field and proven expertise of independent research. The successful candidate will actively collaborate with the research group and participate in joint publications.
ALL APPLICANTS are expected to express in the application documents which of the three positions they are applying for. One can apply also to more than one position, if relevant. Also, different educational background from what has been described above is possible - what is of importance is the candidate’s ability to conduct multidisciplinary research and aptitude to function in a research group aiming for text and data mining and statistical analysis.
The successful candidates will become part of a multidisciplinary research group with the main aim in applying a big data approach to large historical metadata and full-text collections. The idea is particularly to study the development of public discourse and knowledge production in history. The research community in Helsinki offers opportunities for broad, multidisciplinary and international collaboration. It is an advantage if the candidate’s own research plan supports these common goals. More specific objectives for the position and forms of collaboration will be discussed during the possible interview of the candidate. Duties of postdoctoral research include normal participation in teaching at the Faculty (5-10%) and academic service.
An appointee to the position must hold a doctoral degree, the ability to conduct independent scientific research and possess the teaching skills required for the position. Yale University (CT) - Digital Humanities Postdoctoral Associates x3[]
The Digital Humanities Lab (DHLab) at Yale University Library invites applications for three 12-month Postdoctoral Associate positions for the 2017-2018 academic year. We seek energetic and creative applicants who demonstrate innovative thinking and a proactive approach to the questions that digital humanities methods, approaches, tools, and theories raise in their academic disciplines.
The focus of these positions is on a research project defined by the applicant. Scholars with a background in any humanities discipline are eligible to apply; the committee especially encourages applicants with a research focus in:
- Visual Culture, Art, and/or History of Art
- Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Twentieth-Century European History and Literature, and/or Jewish Studies
Each Postdoctoral Associate will have a dedicated workspace in the DHLab in Sterling Memorial Library, a budget for computing equipment, professional development, and relocation expenses, as well as the opportunity to collaborate with technical staff, including a DH Developer and UX Designer. The Postdoctoral Associate's primary responsibility will be to his or her own research project. We also expect candidates will be active participants in the intellectual life of the DHLab.
Applications should include:
- Research plan for the project to be undertaken during the fellowship period, not to exceed 3-5 pages. If you would like to be considered for the joint appointment with the FVAHT, please indicate so here (it will not preclude your consideration for the other two positions).
- Ph.D. or equivalent degree in the humanities, history, or associated discipline from a recognized institution of higher learning. When a candidate has completed all of the requirements for a degree, but the degree has not yet been formally conferred, the candidate may present evidence of completion of the degree, together with a statement of the date on which the degree is to be conferred. If the degree is not conferred by the projected date, the postdoctoral appointment shall be terminated.
- Two letters of recommendation from faculty members or other appropriate sources. The recommenders do not have to be affiliated with Yale. Recommenders should email their letters to dhlab@yale.edu.
- Curriculum vitae.
Applications should be emailed (PDF preferred) to dhlab@yale.edu by 5:00pm on Monday, February 20, 2017. For more information, please visit: http://web.library.yale.edu/dhlab/postdoctoralassociates

- Has anyone heard about this?
- (4/19): I haven't heard anything either, which is kind of surprising. When I submitted my materials I asked for their timeline, and they said they hoped to make decisions by the end of March. I was expecting a rejection letter by now.
