The English Department at Baruch College of the City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor line with a focus in Digital Media. The successful candidate will serve as the Associate Director of First-Year Writing beginning August 26, 2020.

The Associate Director of Composition will serve as a faculty administrator with reduced teaching responsibilities, collaborating with the Writing Program Director, other faculty, and Graduate Writing Fellows on curriculum development, personnel management, professional development, assessment, program research initiatives, and program operations. We especially seek candidates who focus on digital media in their research and teaching and who can contribute to a burgeoning concentration in rhetoric, writing, and linguistics in the department by developing and teaching courses in such areas as digital humanities, multimodal composing, advanced editing, and digital storytelling. 

Tenure-track and tenured faculty teach 18 hours per academic year. Pre-tenure faculty are awarded a significant amount of reassigned time for the first five years and reduced teaching responsibilities, and faculty who hold administrative positions are granted additional reassigned time.

The College is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to our mission of educating one of the most diverse student bodies in the U.S. Successful candidates will collaborate with an engaged writing faculty to design and teach courses in first-year writing and upper division courses in rhetoric and writing.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must possess a Ph.D. by August 26, 2020, in Rhetoric and Composition, English, Technical or Professional Communication, or other related fields. Applicants should have experience teaching multiple first-year writing courses with preference for experience developing and teaching upper level writing and rhetoric courses. Evidence of teaching excellence is required. Previous writing program administration experience is preferred. The successful applicant will also demonstrate interest in continued professional development and research related to writing studies and writing program administration.  Applicants also should have a good understanding of and experience with teaching a diverse student body.

Dartmouth - TT Open Rank Professor in Digital Humanities and Social Engagement

Dartmouth College invites applications for an open rank tenure-track position in Digital Humanities and Social Engagement (DHSE). One or more hires will be a part of a new endowed research cluster, created through a Presidential initiative to extend Dartmouth’s impact on the world through interdisciplinary faculty teams. The DHSE cluster focuses on feminist, anti-racist work in both teaching and research and promotes social engagement as a conscious research agenda for the humanities. Its work will range across diverse areas, including the social and ethical dimensions of digital technologies, digital tools that use the humanities to foster civic engagement, and data and technologies that promote justice. This interdisciplinary appointment will be based in one or more academic units appropriate to the research and teaching areas of the successful candidate.

We seek a colleague whose work is socially engaged and demonstrates a robust commitment to research and teaching on digital cultures, tools, and interventions from both historical and contemporary perspectives. Job Summary and Requirements: Denison University seeks to hire a tenure-track faculty member to further develop its new interdisciplinary program in Data Analytics to start in the Fall of 2020. Candidates must have earned a Ph. D. no later than August 2020, and have a broad and deep formal education in a humanities discipline and in data-driven approaches to research in that discipline. The successful applicant will be actively engaged in research that applies advanced data analytics techniques to significant literary, historical, philosophical, cultural, linguistic, or artistic inquiry. The successful applicant will also be committed to teaching undergraduate students in an interdisciplinary setting.

New hires are normally made at the rank of Assistant Professor, but hiring at an advanced rank may be possible with significant prior experience. We seek to hire an individual with deep and innovative background in the humanities and data analysis that is representative of the applied, interdisciplinary nature of Data Analytics. Consequently, candidates for the position must have significant formal education in analytics, and actively engage in research that uses or develops advanced data analytics techniques. The ideal candidate will hold a Ph. D. in a humanities discipline or in a data science field, and their research should significantly emphasize data-driven techniques and quantitative approaches to questions within the humanities. Candidates must demonstrate successful teaching at the undergraduate level and a strong desire for pedagogical and curricular innovation within a liberal arts environment. We are seeking energetic self-starters who have a passion for bridging traditional disciplinary boundaries and an interest in linking the classroom to the wider faculty and community.

Teaching responsibilities will include core courses for the Data Analytics major (course specifics can be found at https://denison.edu/academics/data-analytics/courses), as well as the potential to design and teach courses in the candidate's data analytic specialty. The typical teaching load is 5 courses per year. The Data Analytics Program is growing rapidly at Denison, and is currently among the largest majors on campus, with more than 120 students. As interdisciplinary majors, all students choose a domain area in which to develop disciplinary knowledge in addition to the core Data Analytics skills. Humanistic aspects of ICT

We welcome applicants working with humanistic aspects of ICT, broadly conceived. Applicants should have an interdisciplinary orientation and an expressed interest in participating in the cross-disciplinary cooperation at the department.

The Department for Design and Communication is currently establishing a Center for Computational Thinking, in collaboration with Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. Special focus areas for the center are design for learning computational thinking; computational thinking (analogue, embodied, and digital), modelling, and visualization within the humanities; and computational thinking through “computational things” (physical ICT).

It is a requirement for the position that the applicant should have documented research qualifications within humanistic aspects of ICT. Programming skills are welcomed but not required.

Our society is changing. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and related technologies are playing an increasingly important role in our society. To this end Leiden University has started a new, university wide initiative to enable collaboration on the use of AI. By building on and expanding the already existing expertise of AI the project intends to advance science and improve the quality of our life. All the disciplines of the University of Leiden are involved: Archeology, Humanities, Social Sciences, Law, Public Administration, Sciences, and also the Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC), to collaborate and appoint new staff with joint interests. Leiden University has earmarked dedicated funding for the appointment of full professors, assistant professors, a post-doc and support staff to facilitate the expansion of AI related research at all its departments.

Key responsibilities
This new chair will focus on the interaction between mental grammar and processes such as language acquisition, production and perception, by investigating, developing and applying methods and tools of computational linguistics and AI, such as deep neural learning and machine learning. The goal of this research is to gain a deeper understanding of natural language and to improve language and speech technology. One important aspect in the area of natural language processing (NLP) is statistical processing. Take for instance automatic speech recognition: very good results are booked using algorithms that make predictions about the signal based on statistical probabilities. The same is true for automatic translation where sequence-to-sequence translations (i.e. translation of lexical bundles) yield very high success rates. Indeed, the data-driven approach currently dominates the field of machine translation. However, an important question is how much knowledge about grammatical structure is necessary to further improve the outcome of automatic speech recognition, automatic translation and other language and speech technology. Currently, attempts are made to combine or complement data-driven approaches with rule-based methods in order to overcome inherent limitations with the statistical approaches.

Princeton University - Center for Digital Humanities Postdoctoral Research Associate

The Center for Digital Humanities (CDH) at Princeton University invites applications for a Digital Humanities Postdoctoral Perkins Fellow in the Council of the Humanities, anticipated to start in July 2020.

As a member of the CDH team, the Digital Humanities Fellow will devote 50% time to participating in the life of the Center, which includes: collaborating with faculty, graduate students, librarians, programmers, and designers on DH projects, providing consultations, offering workshops, and attending regular staff meetings and CDH events. The other 50% of the candidate's time will involve developing their own research project. Additionally, the successful candidate is expected to teach at least one, but no more than two, digital humanities courses per year during their fellowship, subject to sufficient enrollments and with the approval of the Dean of the Faculty. When teaching, they will carry the additional title of Lecturer, and research responsibilities will be reduced accordingly. The Perkins Fellow is also expected to participate in the life of the Humanities Council.

The successful candidate is an innovative scholar who will bring theoretical, methodological, and technical expertise to the CDH community. Demonstrated experience working on digital humanities projects, as well as familiarity with the main DH trends, research tools and technologies, is required. Expertise in data analysis and visualization, particularly with networks or text mining, is preferred. The Fellow must show excellence in teaching, and must have skill and interest in advising students and colleagues in Digital Humanities work. The Fellow must have the ability to work collaboratively, and have excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills. PhD required. Untenured scholars with less than three years of postdoctoral experience are eligible to apply.

The Digital Humanities Postdoctoral Perkins Fellow in the Council for the Humanities, including its appointment and teaching, is formally housed in the Council for the Humanities at the rank of Postdoctoral Research Associate. This is a 12-month position, with the second year renewed upon satisfactory performance. The salary is $65,000 per year. Fellows are eligible for up to $3,000 in relocation expenses which is considered taxable income. Before their departure, the Fellow is required to submit a report on their scholarly activities at Princeton.

University College Cork invites applications for an experienced Senior Research Fellow to lead a new high impact 5-year research project in the area of Hip Hop Studies. The position of Senior Research Fellow is in the area of Computer Science and Cultural Data Analytics and is available at the Department of Music in the School of Film, Music, and Theatre at University College Cork. The position is funded by the European Research Council and is associated with the research project CIPHER: Hip Hop Interpellation. This study of global hip hop knowledge flows will synergize computational and ethnographic methods to examine how hip hop “unlocks the global through the local.” The principal investigator of the project is Professor J. Griffith Rollefson.

The successful candidate will work on a research project in global hip hop studies that combines cultural data analytics (text and sound, crowdsourcing, NLP, machine learning, semantic web, stylometry) with ethnographic and cultural studies methods. The researcher will work closely with the PI and a team of ethnographic researchers. S/he will also manage a dedicated doctoral student and a computational support team at the Insight Centre for Data Analytics.

The successful candidate is expected to live in Cork, Ireland and become part of the research environment/network of the university and contribute to its development. The researcher is expected to publish independently and together with the CIPHER team, present research papers at workshops and international conferences, and contribute to popular dissemination of the research results.

University of Connecticut (UConn) - Greenhouse Studios Fellow (Postdoctoral, Post-MLIS, or Post-MFA)

Greenhouse Studios|Scholarly Communications Design at the University of Connecticut is accepting applications for a post-MLIS, post-MFA or postdoctoral research associate with an anticipated start date of January 2020. The Greenhouse Studios Fellow contributes leadership, project management, and research expertise to the production of collaborative multimodal products and supports the strategic initiatives of Greenhouse Studios. The ideal candidate will bring one or a combination of the following to the position: experience in the production of digital scholarship and/or online publishing; a knowledge of current and emerging digital technologies in data management, access, and preservation; knowledge of web and interactive design; and/or working knowledge of data collection and analysis.

As an innovative research unit located within the UConn Library, Greenhouse Studios provides opportunities for fellows to interact with cross-disciplinary partners while exploring new methods for research, experimentation, collaboration, and publication of information. As a member of the UConn Library this position will also contribute to special projects and initiatives as set by the Library’s senior leadership.  The Greenhouse Studios is a joint effort of the UConn Library, School of Fine Arts, and the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, with each contributing resources and personnel to advance scholarly communications research.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. ALA-accredited MLS or MIS, MFA, Ph.D. or other relevant terminal degree.
2. Demonstrated ability to develop expertise in current and emerging digital technologies.
3. Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of researchers, staff, and students.
4. Demonstrated ability in analytical reasoning and creative problem solving.
5. Demonstrated leadership ability and excellent communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Experience in an academic research library.
2. Experience working with cross-disciplinary teams.
3. Knowledge of metadata structures and data preservation strategies.
4. Experience using and/or supporting research computing technology.
5. Broad familiarity with IT systems and infrastructure.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

The University offers a competitive salary, outstanding benefits, including employee and dependent tuition waivers at UConn and a highly desirable work environment.  This is a full-time, one-year end dated position with the possibility renewal for a second year.  The position is based in Storrs, Connecticut and salary is dependent upon education, qualifications, and experience.

University of Michigan - Digital Studies Institute - Research Fellow (Postdoctoral Fellow in Digital Studies)

The Digital Studies Institute at the University of Michigan invites candidates for the inaugural DSI Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. This is a 12-month term-limited position beginning 9/1/20 with the possibility of a renewal for a second 12-month term. The DSI is a recently launched interdisciplinary institute focused on supporting cutting-edge and vigorous research into a wide range of facets in digital culture, such as algorithm studies, gaming and/or social media studies, digital media, etc.

Applications are welcome from scholars with demonstrated research expertise in digital studies and who are at the beginning of their academic careers, having received the Ph.D. This is an ideal opportunity for a scholar with interest in race, gender, sexuality, and digital technologies, algorithmic bias and inequality, and social media and/or gaming culture. University of Houston – Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage – Mellon-Funded Postdoctoral Fellow in US Latino Digital Humanities

The application period is now open for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in US Latino Digital Humanities (USLDH), a division of Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage program (Recovery) at the University of Houston. The program is looking for a recent (less than 5 years) Ph.D. graduate with background expertise in US Latino Studies. The postdoctoral fellow will help re-vision new strategies for data hosted at Recovery in support of teaching, research and community engagement and help to develop initiatives that will enhance collections and scholarship in the field. USLDH will provide the selected candidate with the necessary training in digital tools, metadata and digitization standards, project and content management systems and platforms. The fellow will be expected to create and publish a significant DH project using Recovery’s archives, assist with instruction, support projects and scholars, serve as a mentor for Research Fellows, lead workshops and collaborate in the creation and implementation of toolkits and other pedagogical tools. The postdoctoral fellow will give one university-wide presentation per year at the University of Houston and will have opportunities to teach courses or be invited as a lecturer at partner departments.

The fellowship stipend will be $50,000 per year, plus benefits. Research and professional development funds (for workshops and conferences) of $3,000 per year are budgeted to support the fellow.

Background

The University of Houston’s Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage is a program that researches, recovers and makes available the written legacy of Latinas and Latinos in the US from colonial times to 1980. Its digital repository includes hundreds of thousands of diverse texts, most of which are written in the Spanish language.

Qualifications

• PhD in humanities or library science field completed before beginning the fellowship
• Background or familiarity with Latino Studies
• Some familiarity with descriptive metadata standards and Digital Humanities
• Knowledge of Spanish
• Basic computational skills (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
