The Technical Communication faculty in the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts on the Polytechnic Campus at Arizona State University invite applications for an Assistant Professor position in Technical Communication, with specialization in User Experience, Data Visualization or Social/New Media. Expectations for this position include: teaching undergraduate and graduate courses; engaging in research applicable to technical communication; practicing inclusive teaching and mentoring; and providing service to the unit, college, and university. Teaching load is typically two (2) courses per semester. Course load and composition are determined by the faculty head. This is an academic-year appointment with an expected start date of August 2022. The Assistant Professor position is a benefits-eligible appointment with tenure implications. The Technical Communication program is home to vibrant and innovative scholars, teachers, and students. Arizona State University / Sidney Poitier New American Film School: Professor of Practice, Narrative and Immersive Media (Los Angeles Campus)

The Sidney Poitier New American Film School at Arizona State University seeks a full-time Professor of Practice, beginning January 1, 2022, to teach in a new practice-based Master of Arts in Narrative and Immersive Media in Los Angeles, California at the Herald Examiner Building. The Master of Arts in Narrative and Immersive Media is a professionally focused Masters of Arts program with close links to the film industry. The ideal candidate will possess communication skills and extensive experience of immersive storytelling in the creative industries and will support students throughout the program in a series of practice-based development labs exploring creativity, narrative and presence design in immersive and spatial storytelling from concept to final delivery. Through a hands-on, experimental and practice-led approach, the Professor of Practice introduces our students to immersive storytelling across a spectrum of platforms, providing graduates with a wide range of storytelling skills. The Professor of Practice will work within the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, The Sidney Poitier New American Film School and the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The Lecturer, Film/Producing will be well versed in traditional modes of film production and post-production, as well as a production pipelines in one or more of the following areas: experimental narrative, digital filmmaking, game production, animation, XR storytelling, media for performance, media installation, or other distinctive, trans-disciplinary, cinematic forms. The Lecturer of Film/Producing will teach 6-8 courses per academic year, which will include introduction and intermediate film production fundamentals, as well as developing new courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, interest, or specialization. Augustana University invites applications for a 10-month, full-time assistant or associate professor in the Department of English and Journalism beginning in August 2022.

Brigham Young University: Assistant Research Professor (Digital Humanities)

The School of Critical Studies at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and the MA Aesthetics and Politics program invite applications for a full-time position in Media/ Digital Studies. The successful candidate’s research will focus on the politics of “new media” and transnational Black Studies, with the Caribbean, Latin America, Asia, North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, or the Middle East as possible geographical areas of expertise. We seek to appoint an emerging teacher-scholar whose work complements that of the program’s internationally recognized faculty and distinguished visitors. The candidate should have a promising research portfolio that demonstrates knowledge of such fields as materialist media studies, feminist science and technology studies, digital/software/platform studies, or critical surveillance studies. Manchester University: Assistant Professor of Communication (Digital Media Arts) (North Manchester, Indiana)

Job Responsibilities and Duties:  This is a full-time, non-tenure track teaching position in Communication Studies reporting through the department chair to the Dean of Arts and Sciences and the Vice President of Academic Affairs.  Primary responsibilities include teaching courses in media literacy, media production, digital storytelling, podcasting, and human communication. The candidate will support the Communication Studies and Digital Media Arts programs, and will have the opportunity to develop courses in their areas of interest. The candidate should be willing to collaborate with community organizations in media production. The teaching load is 24 semester hours per year. University of Mary Washington: Assistant Professor of Digital Studies

The University of Mary Washington invites applications for an assistant professor (tenure-track) in digital media production starting in the Fall 2022 semester to contribute to the major in Communication and Digital Studies.

The successful candidate should have substantial professional and/or research experience in multimedia production -- including video, audio, animation, web, or interactive media  -- as well as significant teaching experience. University of Pennsylvania Libraries

The Research Data and Digital Scholarship (RDDS) team at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries is looking for a digital scholarship programmer to be the server-side programmer and technical lead on data-intensive digital humanities and digital scholarship projects.

The incumbent will work alongside RDDS team members with skills in data science, text mining, design, digital cultural heritage, scholarly communication, data visualization, and mapping to create lightweight web applications, digital humanities tools, and digital projects in collaboration with Penn faculty and students. As a project technical lead, they will have excellent knowledge of scripting languages such as Python; web-development technologies and frameworks (Javascript, CSS, HTML5); and relational and NoSQL databases. As a faculty-and-student facing member of the RDDS team, they will also have sound project management chops and a knack for explaining complex ideas to a broad variety of stakeholders.

All Research Data and Digital Scholarship team members are expected and encouraged to dedicate one half-day a week to independent collaborative, creative, research, or professional development activities.

Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

  • Serve as technical lead on digital scholarship projects involving server-side coding of web-based applications, training students where applicable.
  • In collaboration with Libraries colleagues, contribute technical expertise to budding efforts to promote library collections as data
  • In collaboration with the RDDS team and others, develop and maintain open-source tools, platforms, or projects for digital scholarly use
  • Providing guidance and recommendations for technical infrastructure for digital scholarship projects
  • As a member of the RDDS team, provide instruction and consultation on digital scholarship methods in the humanities and social sciences, with a particular focus on text and data mining
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical capacities
  • Demonstrated proficiency in deploying web application using OS virtualization/containerization tools (e.g. Docker).
  • Proven experience with relational and NoSQL databases
  • In-depth knowledge of one or more programming languages, preferably including Python
  • Direct experience with collaborative GitHub workflows and command line use
  • Experience with static site generation
  • Ability to write clear, well-documented code
  • Teaching experience (informal or formal)
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas in an understandable way to a broad variety of stakeholders

Preferred:

  • Experience developing RESTful APIs
  • Knowledge of iiif image delivery and image viewers
  • Experience applying computational approaches to SSH research
  • Master’s degree in a humanities or social science discipline
