- I went to submit through the online system on Nov 3, but it was only after answering 9 (!) supplementary short answer questions, that the system prompted me to upload the following documents. There's no description of this requirement anywhere. Anyone else think this is strange? I feel blindsided.
- Curriculum Vitae, Cover Letter, Teaching Philosophy, Publications, Syllabi Examples, Student Evaluations, Professional Writing Sample
- Agreed--the strangest app to date. 8 supp. questions (half of which are the normal throwaway questions that start out an interview) and then all of this info? Publications and writing sample, with mailed letters of rec? They definitely thinned the herd.
- Yep -- totally wasn't sure what to expect when it told me not to begin the supplemental questions without having my docs ready, and then the next page was a bazillion required docs. Plus, I found it odd that they didn't tell you beforehand that you had a 1200 character limit on your answers to the supplemental questions.

Merrimack College (USA: MA) - [non-TT;VAP] US since 1865[]

- The successful candidate will teach survey and upper-division undergraduate courses in American history, and the department is interested in candidates with some training in public history
- Teaching load: at least three four-credit courses (and two different course preparations) per semester
- Must have PhD by time of appointment
- Deadline: 15 Jan. 2015
- Contacted for Skype interview (1/19) x 2 Deadline: 15 Jan. 2015
- Received rejection letter today, 17 April 2015. I applied for this job based on the first version of the job ad, which appeared to be a temporary replacement position. It was not a VAP. I would have written a very different letter for a VAP. After I submitted all of my materials the department changed the position to a VAP. Why do I bother?
Miami University of Ohio (USA: OH) - after 1815 (2 positions)[]
- Two tenure-track assistant professors to teach U.S. History after 1815, to begin August 17, 2015.
- Area of specialty is open.
- PhD in History required by date of appointment.
- Applicants should submit letter of interest, curriculum vitae, and list of three references to http://www.miamiujobs.com/applicants/Central?quickFind=53803. Three letters of recommendation should be sent directly to U.S. History Search Committee, History Department, Miami University, 200 Upham Hall, 100 Bishop Circle, Oxford, OH 45056, or emailed to schanejl@miamioh.edu.
- Screening of applications begins 15 Sept. 2014, and will continue until the position is filled.
- Acknowledgement of application received, 9/05 (x2)
- Has anyone else completed the application, received a confirmation number, and not had their application acknowledged? (Same poster--nevermind, it went into my "junk" folder)
- Request for a writing sample (diss chapter or article) and "evidence of teaching excellence." Email also indicated tight timetable; they want to conclude the search by the end of the semester. Rec'd 9/26. x2
- FWIW, they could easily fill both these position with their current VAPs. I wonder if that's why they're trying to wrap this up before AHA.
- Would anyone contacted be willing the share their research area? It was such a broad search
- Normally, I'm opposed to the early reveal of information, but since the search is so broad, I'd like to see if anyone would be willing to share their chronological focus.
- Rejection received via e-mail (9/29) x5
- Rejection received via e-mail (9/29)
- Rejection received via e-mail (9/30)
- That was quick. Rejection received via e-mail (9/29)
- So I realize, reading this, that I never received an acknowledgement of application received (I applied on 9/12). It looks like this thing has sailed, but for future reference, what did the acknowlegment indicate? (I don't know how my application didn't get received. The online Miamia system says it did...)
- The acknowledgement did not contain any detail. The rejection only stated that the committee had received "hundreds of very impressive applications." It seems like this is a rolling process, so this is one of those cases in which no news is actually no news.
- The acknowledgement I rec'd said something like "we have received your application, and will give it full consideration, etc." and I got it a day or two after submitting the application. The rejection email mentioned the "hundreds of impressive applications."
- Yes: I recieved an acknowledgement that my application was received. And radio silence since (10/8)
- I also received an email acknowledgement and nothing since. Perhaps we're on the backup
- I received neither a rejection nor a request for more materials - anyone else in that boat? (10/8)
- list? (10/17)
- Request for Skype interview (9 Oct) x2
- Contacted for on-campus interview. Mentioned more than 400 initial applicants.... (10/17)
- Would you mind sharing if you are ABD/done? (10/28)
- Has an offer been made here? Or are campus interviews still underway?
- The department meets to make a decision on 12/5.
- Ok, the suspense is killing me--someone got The Call, right? (12/10)
- I just got a rejection email - my first communication from them since confirmation, which likely means I was on a B-list of some kind. Sending those out that tells me that an offer has most likely been accepted (12/11)
- As per the course catalog, it appears that Aaron Cavin (Michigan, 2012; current VAP) and Andrew Offenberger (Yale, 2014) are the two hires.
- Well, you're 50% right. It's Offenberger and Lindsay Regele (Brown, 2015).

- Anyone applying for this one? (5/15)
- Yet another inside hire. Every year they run a search for a VAP, then the following year run a very specific search for a TT AP that matches almost exactly the VAP hire. Here is the ad from last year: https://www.h-net.org/jobs/job_display.php?id=48375 And the hire: http://www.unk.edu/academics/history/jeff_wells.php who, it seems, would be an ideal fit for this position.
- They did the exact same thing last year. 2013 VAP hire: http://www.unk.edu/academics/history/peter_gough.php2014 TT AP search: https://www.h-net.org/jobs/job_display.php?id=48604
- My advice: Wait for the VAP ad, which should be out in the next month or two, apply for that and do well enough for them to write a position just for you next spring.
- Is Wells "visiting"? He looks tracked.
- "Reviewed by Jeff Wells, visiting assistant professor of history, University of Nebraska at Kearney" https://www.kshs.org/p/kansas-history-autumn-2014/19094
- Actually, none of the above--starting with the comment that "every year they run a search for a VAP"--is true. In 2013 they hired Gough as a VAP and he just switched over to a TT line (2 years later). In 2014 they ran a search for a VAP--that was Wells and his also turned into a TT line last fall. This job is NOT an inside hire...it is a completely new line that the College of Social Sciences granted to the history department this spring. Their department is growing, their MA program is growing, and they need additional TT faculty who can fill these needs. Perhaps people on this wiki should stop making assumptions and simply contact the department directly with such inquiries? (Full disclosure: the above comment comes from outside of the department, but from someone who is in regular contact with the department faculty.)
- So, "none of the above--is true," yet you admit that, in the past two years, two VAPs have been moved to tenure-track jobs within the department, at least one of whom had to formally reapply. This is exactly the sort of thing the AAUP takes an interest in--forcing candidates to undergo a year-long interview before even being placed on the tenuous security of the tenure track, especially when such shady hiring practices extend to other departments at the same university: http://academicjobs.wikia.com/wiki/Universities_to_fear. And, we are also to believe that, in a small, state school with only thirteen full-time positions, they need an "additional TT faculty" member, alongside the five 20th-century/US/West/Regional/Digital specialists they already have on staff, and are hiring another one? This is the sort of thing that brings into question the above anonymous poster's objectivity and status as someone "outside of the department." Perhaps you could have someone "inside of the department" come on here and answer the above questions directly, as well as how much teaching will be online, and why one of the supposed TT faculty is still being paid at the VAP level (p.1216 http://nebraska.edu/docs/budget/personnel-roster-2014-15.pdf (BTW, You have to love how anti-government red states insist that every dime paid to state employees [except for administrators!] be a matter of public record, yet refuse to release how much corporate welfare they pay to private corporations in the form of incentives and tax breaks, but that's probably a matter for another day--sometimes all that training in research and "digital humanities" really can pay dividends!) I'm sorry, but if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck...
- The initial question was in regard to the status of the job listing and to whether or not this was to be an "inside hire". I attempted, with my knowledge of the department, to dispel any incorrect assumptions that this position was listed for someone who is already on faculty at UNK. It is not an inside hire. This is a small school, and funding for new lines is not always consistent--especially for the humanities and social sciences. The growth of history majors and the History M.A. program called for new faculty positions, and yes--the demand for American history and American Western history is high. Perhaps if you have specific questions about the integrity of the department, the job listing, salaries, corporate welfare and tax breaks, or Nebraska's "anti-government red state" status, you should call the department chair and he/she can answer them directly. Otherwise, I'm not exactly sure what you are asserting about this job posting. The original question asked about inside hires, which I addressed in my above posting. I hope that this helped answer any inquiries to the potential applicants who considered applying for the job.
- Has this search moved forward?
- Rec'd email that position has been offered to another candidate, less than a month after the search closed. Incredibly fast for an external search! (X 2)
- Whoever sent my flush email didn't even bother with a signature.
- I guess it was a duck!

- Applicants should submit application materials as pdf files to http://careers.barnard.edu/postings/984
- Review begins: 1 Nov. 2014.
- can anyone provide insight on the Barnard/Columbia hist depts relationship? (beyond what is formally written)
- It has seemed cordial to me (got my PhD from Columbia about five years ago), and Barnard students take CU classes and vice versa. Barnard Profs also regularly serve on CU dissertation committies. That said, Barnard profs do not (to my knowledge) advise PhDs or graduate students, nor do they have voting privileges on Columbia hires and the like. And there's perhaps a bit of resentment among some Barnard profs, though certainly not all -- Barnard is a sweet gig, liberal arts but connected to a major research university in NYC.
- Sounds like a sweet gig, indeed. Has anyone heard any news on this search? (11/15) not a peep here
- Has anyone received any updates since the last inquiry? (12/01) I still haven't heard anything
- Nothing...(12/5)
- still nothing (12/10)
- Rejection email from the search chair. 179 applicants; bringing small number to NYC for interviews in early Jan (presumably for AHA). Congrats to those moving through to the next round. (12/12)
- On-campus interviews scheduled (1/5)
- Any idea on who got the job? (02/17)
- An email was sent to Columbia/Barnard history departments congratulating Andrew Lipman for accepting the job.

- Review of applications begins 31 October 2014.
- Preliminary interviews to be conducted at the AHA
- Rejection via email (11/6) x5: 145 applicants.... never had a packet "reviewed" so quickly
- Short notice announcement, new Ph.D. in as VAP, fits announcement (and no mention of research expectations). Same story, different school. Ditto!
- Hired their inside candidate. The fix was in on this one, folks. 145 applicants and they hire their VAP? Not to say he isn't qualified, but there's no way it was a fair process. It makes you wonder about the criteria they use to evaluate applications.
- Meh, I don't think you can get offended at an inside hire. (1) It's too common to get offended; (2) If they already have someone they like and think fits the department, what's wrong with that?; (3) Unless you're very familiar with the inside candidate's research, teaching, and service, you shouldn't assume the person didn't deserve it. (4) When the "secondary" market starts know that some of those will turn into tenure track positions. Maybe one day you'll be the the inside candidate.
- Inside candidates always have an upper hand, and no one said that this one wasn't a good fit. So why go through the charade of a national search? It's a burden on applicants that's both an emotional and financial burden. (X2)

- Review of applications scheduled to begin on 1 Nov. 2014.
- Got an email indidcating they're missing one letter of recommendation 11/6
- The email included the addresses of everyone they sent it to, no bcc!
- Lack of bcc was very unprofessional and a real violation of applicant privacy. Think it would hurt my candidacy to contact the chair and ask that this error not be repeated?
- Don't contact the chair. Yes, it sucks, but the chair (like all of us) is probably trying to keep too many balls in the air at one time and made an honest mistake. We would all probably want search committees to cut us some slack for boneheaded errors. Plus you would absolutely torpedo your candidacy, and while I guess we're in competition with one another, I wouldn't want to let you hang yourself over that.

- Request for additional materials x 3
- Rejection letter (11/28)
- Are there others who have received no word at all? (12/3)
- I've also gotten no word either way. But usually that means they just haven't gotten around to sending the rejection materials yet (it happens with big searches). (12/3 x3)
- That's what made the rejection letter mentioned above a bit perplexing. Surely they received 400+ applications. I'd assume that rejection notices (if they come at all) will be by email and en mass.

- I know they're trying to be nice, and maybe it's better for the venting page, but saying that "choosing a new faculty member is particularly challenging when the pool includes a number of candidates who have very promising futures in research and teaching" is just pandering and/or condescending. Clearly some of those candidates won't have those promising futures if 200 or more applicants are applying to every job.
