      • [17 Dec] Why would some applicants receive neither an interview nor a rejection email? This makes no sense to me.
      • [17 Dec] Also can confirm not having heard anything. It's unfortunate that search committees often operate this way.

They made a long list (~40 people) and rejected all the rest. They then made a short list (~12 people) for interviews. They don't want to reject the remaining 28 because they want to be able to return to them in the very unlikely event that all 12 people they interview don't work out. But that never happens.

    • [26] Jan]: Interviews are underway and campus visits will be scheduled late Jan/early Feb
    • [27 Jan]: For folks who haven't heard anything, maybe some numbers info helps. I was rejected this round but the chair is apparently writing to many rejected applicants directly about our applications (v nice imo). He said that they received 160 apps, 100 were well trained and qualified, 50 fit the job specifications, and 12 semi-finalists were selected. I'm assuming that means they're doing 12 interviews, but maybe there are some people between the 12 and the full 50 who haven't been rejected yet so that they're on deck if they want to return to the applicant pool. Good luck! His email gave me a great feeling about the department.
    • [9 Feb]: Hi all, this is Roger Martinez-Davila, a member of the search committee. I know you hear this repeatedly, but I'll say it again -- the expertise and experience of all of you was exceptional. Please remember this point and keep your spirits up. Regardless of whether or not you moved to the next stage, you are all very qualified scholars. Some additional specifics. Yes, we virtually interviewed 12 candidates from Jan. 28 - Jan 25. I believe those no longer under consideration should know that information via email from our committee chair, Paul Harvey. Based on those interviews, we have invited 4 candidates to visit our campus from Feb. 16 - Mar 1, which will include traditional job talks, in-class teaching demonstrations, visits with our search committee faculty (ranging in rank from instructor to full professor), visits with our dean and the provost. We are bringing in a range of candidates -- those finishing their disserations this May 2022, those currently holding postdocs, and also experienced assistant professors. So, every "type" of candidate was competitive for this job.
    • Now, regarding the campus visits. These visits can be quite exhausting; I remember mine vividly from 2010. But, the point of the visits is really to give these candidates a chance to assess who we are as a department, campus, and community. We are very focused on finding a good match, which very much so is about each candidate's preferences. Certainly, we are interviewing the candidates, but we really want to emphasize that we appreciate that we are being interviewed as well. Although I am not certain, I believe we would advance to making an offer to our first candidate no later than the end of March. Typically, an offer is extended with a 1- to 2-week window for the candidate to make a decision and to negotiate on salary, start-up funds, moving expenses, tenure-clock credit for any prior experience, etc. If those negotiations fail (a candidate accepts another offer, for example; this is a real-thing, I am pretty sure I was a second-choice hire), then we naturally reach out to the next choice and repeat the negotiation process. I know this is the most difficult part of the process, but in all fairness to the selected candidate, we are asking them to make a major life-decision in a very short period of time. So, it can easily take 1 to 2 months to complete the hiring process.
    • Lastly, I'll offer some unsolicited advice to all candidates to enhance your approach to selling your expertise and credentials when you are at the interviewing stage. This is the same advice I offerred to a visiting assistant professor we had several years ago and who is interviewing for a job at UW-Madison.
      • Be gracious with you audience. Thank folks for their questions. Answer questions by explaining why and how you've come to certain conclusions. Invite comments  -- "Does that address your question? What is your position on the matter?" This allows people to say what they are thinking -- which is often more important to them than your response.
      • Remember, they aren't specialists, so focus on the big picture, mostly, but showcase 2-3 examples that demonstrate your research and teaching expertise. *Fewer slides is always better. I recommend lecturing off slides as opposed to reading. Certainly, read specific sections where you want precision, but your best friend is the ability to make eye contact with several persons in the room. When you can lecture, and keep your eyes on the audience, you can read body language and expressions so that you can make adjustments. You want to intellectually AND emotionally engage them. You want to compromise their judgment by creating human connections.
      • It is okay to say "I am not certain." In fact, it is a good thing because it implies you are a discerning and thoughtful intellect. But, follow-up these replies with, "However, the process and sources I would use to answer that question would be..." (I once attended a job talk at UC-Berkeley, when I was a graduate student, and watched the faculty bait a candidate and try to get him to say, "I don't know." He wouldn't; he still earned the job. My point: questions serve multiple functions -- so when in doubt -- show folks how you think.
      • Naturally...just be yourself. It is too hard to try to fit any expectations. Rather, sincerity goes a long way with persons trying to determine if you would be a good colleague.
