Position Description:

The University of Northern Iowa's College of Social and Behavioral Sciences seeks applications for the position of Department Head in the Department of History with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2019. This is a five year appointment with potential for renewal. The Department of History consists of 18 faculty and enrolls approximately 170 undergraduate majors, 30 minors and 25 masters students. The Department awards B.A. degrees, Master’s degrees, and minors in History, and it is heavily involved in our Social Science Education program and the Liberal Arts Core. The department seeks candidates who will support a democratic departmental culture that places a value on transparent, deliberative and participatory decision making about significant departmental matters and that strives for equal treatment of faculty members. The Department Head will be responsible for the departmental budget, class schedules, evaluation of faculty, providing leadership and vision, and oversight of the general operations of the department. Normally department heads teach one course both fall and spring semesters.

Earned doctorate degree in any field of History.

Required Qualifications:

The required qualifications include a distinguished record of teaching, research, and service; a current rank of associate or full professor; demonstrated commitment to undergraduate and graduate education; evidence of strong communication skills; and academic administrative experience such as department head, program director, committee chair or other leadership roles in academic or similar programs.

  • The teaching responsibilities will be at the undergraduate level, though graduate level teaching may be possible in cooperation with other program needs (e.g., Humanities, College of Education), depending upon the candidate’s credentials. The selected candidate must be able to teach a broad spectrum of courses in History, which may include U.S., World, European History, as well as courses in Social Science Research and Internships.
