The New School (New York, NY, USA), Assistant Professor of Public Humanities (Deadline: Nov 15th; Review begins Nov 16 until fulfilled)

The New School is seeking an Assistant Professor of Public Humanities to teach in the Liberal Arts program in the Bachelor’s Program for Adults and Transfer Students in the Schools of Public Engagement (SPE). The renewable term appointment will begin July 1, 2022.

We seek a scholar with a research and teaching program that merges humanities-based inquiry with innovative forms of public engagement, reaching audiences both within and outside academia. As a member of the interdisciplinary adult bachelor’s program, this hire will advance the mission of SPE through pedagogy that encourages students to be civically engaged actors and prepares them for community-based, creative, and /or applied work beyond the classroom. While we will consider scholars from a wide range of disciplines within the humanities, we have a particular interest in candidates whose research engages interdisciplinary fields and who have degrees from programs such as American Studies, Critical Race and Ethnicity Studies, Cultural Studies, Performance Studies, Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and Environmental Studies. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated record of social justice advocacy. Preference will also be given to candidates whose research addresses historically underrepresented groups and/or marginalized communities, spaces, and places.

The New School’s Bachelor’s Program for Adults and Transfer Students offers a self-designed liberal arts education where students can pursue a nontraditional path toward degree completion. Through credit granting programs such as Prior Learning and Self Directed Learning, students reflect on their experiences outside the classroom and execute projects under the guidance of our faculty. Many of our students work full time and are returning to school having  pursued careers in a wide variety of fields. As such, they represent a highly self-motivated student body with diverse work experiences and backgrounds.

As part of the Schools of Public Engagement at The New School, the Bachelor’s Program for Adults and Transfer Students values traditional modes of scholarship (e.g., peer reviewed journal articles and books directed at scholarly or general audiences) and creative practice in different media (e.g., films, performance, art exhibitions, and other curatorial projects). Ideal candidates for this position would complement the faculty through public facing scholarship and practice.

Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must have demonstrated experience in teaching at the university level and have Ph.D. in hand by June 2022.

San Diego State University: TT Assistant Professor in Public Humanities

• The Department of Classics and Humanities at San Diego State University (SDSU) invites applications for a position in public humanities at the rank of Assistant Professor to start in the 2022-2023 academic year. We are seeking a dynamic, engaged, scholar who is committed to interdisciplinary approaches, creative research and pedagogy, and program building. We are seeking a candidate with a doctorate in a humanities field, broadly defined, who understands public humanities as those ideas and practices that bridge academia and the public sphere. This may include history, museum studies, American Studies, Critical Race and Ethnicity Studies, Cultural Studies, Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Successful candidates should have promising publishing agendas, experience in the classroom, a demonstrated record of social justice advocacy. Preference will also be given to candidates whose research addresses historically underrepresented groups and/or marginalized communities, spaces, and places.Ph.D. must be in hand by August 2022.
• We encourage applications from candidates with evident experience in public humanities and with research specialization in some combination of the following fields: social justice; representations of race; race and memory; health justice; violence in the public sphere; public art; cultural heritage preservation; public history; or digital public humanities (e.g., virtual tourism, archives, exhibitions). The area of geographical focus is open, as is the disciplinary specialization (Ph.D. training), though we require a candidate with interdisciplinary teaching and research interests who can join other faculty across the college and university in strengthening relationships between the SDSU community and individuals, as well as communities, and organizations outside of academia through public facing scholarship and research. Candidates whose research field is the experience of minority or marginalized communities are especially encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will teach core Humanities courses and will help develop Public Humanities as a new area of specialization within our department and College. We seek a candidate who will contribute to our growing department and augment its existing strengths in analyzing place, community, and identity from a local and transnational perspective. We invite candidates who have a strong commitment to equity in higher education and to supporting a diverse population of students. We are seeking applicants with demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups. Candidates must satisfy two or more of the eight Building on Inclusive Excellence (BIE) criteria. Candidates that meet BIE criteria: (a) are committed to engaging in service with underrepresented populations within the discipline, (b) have demonstrated knowledge of barriers for underrepresented students and faculty within the discipline, (c) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring underrepresented students, (d) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to integrating understanding of underrepresented populations and communities into research, (e) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to extending knowledge of opportunities and challenges in achieving artistic/scholarly success to members of an underrepresented group, (f) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to research that engages underrepresented communities, (g) have expertise or demonstrated commitment to developing expertise in cross-cultural communication and collaboration, and/or (h) have research interests that contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education. University of Texas at San Antonio: TT Assistant Professor in Digital Humanities

Job Description:

The College of Liberal and Fine Arts (COLFA) at The University of Texas at San Antonio seeks a faculty member who will contribute to COLFA’s interdisciplinary work by teaching and researching in the digital humanities, broadly understood. This assistant professor will be housed in one or more of COLFA’s departments (Anthropology, Art and Art History, Communication, English, History, Modern Languages and Literatures, Music, Philosophy and Classics, Political Science and Geography, and Southwest School of the Arts), depending on the most appropriate discipline affiliation. The assistant professor will also have the opportunity to collaborate with departments in other colleges, especially around the computational, mathematical, and statistical foundations of data science.

Research-active faculty in COLFA typically teach a 2/2 course load. We seek a candidate whose research includes one or more of the following: digital archives, mapping, data visualization, data mining, machine learning, digital design or composition, new media, digital pedagogy, science and technology studies, scientific open source projects, software reproducibility, team science, critical analysis of social media, development or critical/theoretical analysis of digital tools, critical code studies, digital markup, and born-digital texts. Ideal candidates will have an interdisciplinary research program that engages with Public Humanities, creating work that either is informed by the public or has a public-facing component. Responsibilities include: teaching introductory, upper division, and graduate courses in home discipline and contributing to a growing curriculum in digital humanities across COLFA; contributing to the university and community through service and outreach; and maintaining an active research agenda that results in such products as publications, grants, software, curated datasets/databases, and digital archives.

Requirements:

Successful applicants will have 1) a strong record of teaching and research; 2) an active research agenda with evidence of digital skills and public humanities experience; 3) the ability to successfully teach (including building digital skills and experience) and mentor diverse, underserved students, including first-generation students, underrepresented minorities, and non-traditional students, and the ability to contribute to the university’s commitment to inclusive excellence as a Hispanic Serving Institution; and 4) a terminal degree in their field at time of appointment.
