Appalachian State University, Boone (Assistant Professor, Women's Studies)[]

Appalachian State University’s Women’s Studies Program seeks applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track position in Women’s Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 2011. The successful candidate will be tenurable in an appropriate academic department on campus and may teach in that department as well as in Women’s Studies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach 3 courses per semester, ranging from introductory to graduate level;
  • Maintain scholarly and/or creative activity appropriate to field(s) of expertise;
  • Serve on Program and university committees;
  • Advise students in the Women’s Studies Program;
  • Participate in curriculum development and recruiting for the Program.

Required Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree (doctorate or MFA);
  • Evidence of scholarly and/or creative achievement in women’s and/or gender studies;
  • Experience teaching at the undergraduate level.

Applications must include all of the following:

  • A letter of application;
  • A current CV, including the names and contact information of at least 3 references;
  • A one-page statement describing how your work reflects feminist goals and practices;
  • A sample syllabus for an undergraduate class, either one you have taught or one you might propose to teach.

    • Any idea why they would extend the deadline when every other job seems to be inundated with too many applications as it is?
      • Many reasons for this, two I can think of offhand: 1) they actually didn't get many applications (a job in my department only got 40, so not ALL open positions are getting hundreds), and 2) they realized they wouldn't have time to review them until after winter break, so they extended the deadline instead of having a huge gap between deadline and review.   • Given that I got the email yesterday and that the NWSA is practically next week, I think this means I'm out of the running.
    • Not necessarily out of the running. I got an email saying they were doing interviews at NWSA but I simply can't afford to go to the conference, and they likely know that people can't always go. However, when I called to check on whether letters of rec had made it there they said that they got three times as many applications as they expected (not sure exactly what that means but I'm guessing a few hundred). I don't think that not being at NWSA means you're out of the running... not sure how important conference interviews are at NWSA but at my other professional conference they mean pretty much nothing in terms of whether you'll get a phone or campus interview.     • To the above: It's an open secret that the disclaimer at the end of the ads of Canadian universities is a legal formality. Most Canadian universities actively court US T-Ts or graduates and there is a consistent pattern that has emerged in the hiring practices of the last 5-8 years where US degree-holders have edged out Canadian ones in campus visits and final appointments. This is true certainly of UT and UBC; places like McMaster are likely to follow the trend rather than buck it.
    • I'm not a Canadian citizen, and I was the one who originally posted about receiving an email. I wouldn't read much into it, honestly. My app was a day or so late, so that might have something to do with the email confirmation. If you're concerned about your app being complete, I'd just send an email to the admin. assistant.
    • Canadian citizen chiming in here to comment on the preference for US candidates. This is true of our top research institutions. Not only is it apparent at U of T and UBC, but also at McGill and Queen's. I wish there was equitable "preference" for Canadians applying to US jobs because we're doubly losing out here.

    • I have an on-campus interview - they contacted me by phone and email. I'm Canadian, and more WGS than strictly English. I do critical race/queer stuff. No idea about the other four candidates on those counts, though! And I think it's interesting that they didn't do any preliminary interviews. - I've had a couple of on-campus interviews at Canadian schools, though not this one, and have never had a preliminary interview; they tend to go straight to campus. Also, I am Canadian with a British, not Oxbridge but close, PhD.
    • The above italicised bit does not hold for all or even most Canadian universities: many interview at MLA or do phone interviews. (I am yet to hear of Skype being used). In the case of McM, the rush to on-campus interview is necessitated probably by the fact that they advertised so late and in a position where it is likely they would have received residuals of the via-MLA process. Of course, other less palatable reasons may also be there, but all that would be vain speculation for now.

  • Rejection letter via snail mail. Probably a form letter. Claimed to be "very impressed with my credentials" in spite of rejection. (3/1) ditto, same letter 2/28 - same letter here too. "wanted [me] to know that [they] were very impressed with [my] credentials". Earth to SC: if you send a form letter like that to everyone, it stops being encouraging and starts being patronizing. * Same letter here too (3/3) - what is sad is that i actually felt better when i read that they were "very impressed with my credentials." Visiting Assistant Professor of Comparative American Studies


The Comparative American Studies Program at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time non-continuing faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences. Appointment to this position will be for a term of one year, beginning in the Fall semester of 2011, and will carry the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor.

The incumbent will teach a total of five courses in the general area of cultural studies, with a preference for visual culture studies. We are particularly interested in candidates with training in feminist cultural theories and methodologies, utilizing both humanistic and intersectional approaches to the study of sexuality, citizenship, race, globalization and inequality. The Comparative American Studies Program is committed to interdisciplinary and theoretically informed intersectional pedagogy at the undergraduate level. The faculty member is expected to integrate issues of gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, and citizenship within a comparative and/or transnational frame throughout their teaching. Successful candidates will also be expected to participate in the full range of faculty responsibilities.

Among the qualifications required for the appointment is the Ph.D. degree (in hand or ABD). Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable.

The fellow will take a leading role in a Sawyer Seminar titled "International Women's Human Rights: Paradigms, Paradoxes, and Possibilities," which is funded by the Andrew W. The seminar's task will be to address but also attempt to move beyond current formulations of the inherent difficulties and complexities associated with thinking about transnational feminism as a practice of declaring and claiming women's human rights. This will involve, among other things, a comparative approach to women's human rights which analyzes the differences and similarities between the European and the Indian rights traditions.

  • I suspect they aren't doing conference interviews at all. The ads they ran on H-Net and with the AHA - for the "strong preference" for history of feminism part of the ad - did not mention interviewing at NWSA. I can't imagine they're going to both the MLA and AHA conferences in early January. So my guess - and it's only that - is that they'll do phone interviews for the first round.

My primary emphasis of work is in masculinities, I served as a gender and sexuality specialist for a decade, I have numerous publications, and my references are from Canadian and U.S. gender studies folks who are top in their field. But, as we all know, there are A LOT of wonderfully qualified people out there--with far too few positions available!
