- Yeah, they extended the deadline. I wish I would've known that before I rushed to send in my application. I wouldn't be surprised if they started contacting applicants early next year.
- Any idea why they would extend the deadline when every other job seems to be inundated with too many applications as it is?
  - Many reasons for this, two I can think of offhand: 1) they actually didn't get many applications (a job in my department only got 40, so not ALL open positions are getting hundreds), and 2) they realized they wouldn't have time to review them until after winter break, so they extended the deadline instead of having a huge gap between deadline and review. Given that I got the email yesterday and that the NWSA is practically next week, I think this means I'm out of the running.
- Not necessarily out of the running. I got an email saying they were doing interviews at NWSA but I simply can't afford to go to the conference, and they likely know that people can't always go. However, when I called to check on whether letters of rec had made it there they said that they got three times as many applications as they expected (not sure exactly what that means but I'm guessing a few hundred). I don't think that not being at NWSA means you're out of the running... not sure how important conference interviews are at NWSA but at my other professional conference they mean pretty much nothing in terms of whether you'll get a phone or campus interview. - To the above: It's an open secret that the disclaimer at the end of the ads of Canadian universities is a legal formality. Most Canadian universities actively court US T-Ts or graduates and there is a consistent pattern that has emerged in the hiring practices of the last 5-8 years where US degree-holders have edged out Canadian ones in campus visits and final appointments. This is true certainly of UT and UBC; places like McMaster are likely to follow the trend rather than buck it.
- I'm not a Canadian citizen, and I was the one who originally posted about receiving an email. I wouldn't read much into it, honestly. My app was a day or so late, so that might have something to do with the email confirmation. If you're concerned about your app being complete, I'd just send an email to the admin. assistant.

University of Chicago, Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Center for Gender Studies

The Center for Gender Studies at the University of Chicago invites applications for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship beginning September 15, 2011 and lasting through the academic year. The fellow will take a leading role in a Sawyer Seminar titled "International Women's Human Rights: Paradigms, Paradoxes, and Possibilities," which is funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will teach one undergraduate course on the seminar's issues during the 2011-12 academic year, and will co-organize one undergraduate workshop/conference.
Theme of Sawyer Seminar: The seminar is designed to address contradictions within the concept and practice of women's human rights. Such contradictions can be seen in the notion of a "women's crusade" that sets up an increasingly suspect opposition between the plights of women in developing countries on the one hand and advanced industrialized countries on the other, in the appropriation of the language of women's rights by groups unsympathetic to Western rights-based feminism, in the use of human rights discourse to justify military interventions, and in the reliance on a Western liberal framework that is inattentive to crucial cultural, social, and political national differences, that privileges civil and political rights over social and economic rights, and that tends to construe women in the developing world as victims of a stalled or failed modernization process. The seminar's task will be to address but also attempt to move beyond current formulations of the inherent difficulties and complexities associated with thinking about transnational feminism as a practice of declaring and claiming women's human rights. This will involve, among other things, a comparative approach to women's human rights which analyzes the differences and similarities between the European and the Indian rights traditions.
We will consider applications from candidates with backgrounds in the humanities, social sciences, law, or theological studies who have scholarly interests in the central themes of the Seminar.
The applicant must have received her or his PhD or JD between September 16, 2006 and September 15, 2011. The stipend for the postdoctoral fellowship is $50,000, plus benefits. One quarter of teaching (Autumn or Winter) is required, and the fellow is expected to be in residence full-time in academic year 2011-12.

Here's something interesting, I just looked at the NWSA Employment Service Listing (of institutions conducting interviews at NWSA) and Kentucky isn't on there (http://www.nwsa.org/employ/jobservice.php) even though the original post says interviews will be at NWSA. Do you think they got too many applications to shift through in time for NWSA?
I thought that, perhaps, since they advertised on the MLA list that they intended to interview at the MLA, which is in early January. That would be consistent with the "strong preference" for cultural/media studies and literary studies.
huh, interesting, I could have sworn they were on the list of folks interviewing at NWSA but maybe you're right. That revives some hope on my end.
I suspect they aren't doing conference interviews at all. The ads they ran on H-Net and with the AHA - for the "strong preference" for history of feminism part of the ad - did not mention interviewing at NWSA. I can't imagine they're going to both the MLA and AHA conferences in early January. So my guess - and it's only that - is that they'll do phone interviews for the first round.

Thanks for the info. My discipline does not fit into MLA--perhaps I should just ask the chair; I made an inquiry, and the chair's prompt response was that they will be setting up telephone and MLA interviews shortly. MLA interviews are for the ethnic literature and film/media studies positions, and telephone interviews for other postions will take place in January after MLA (12/12)

When I made an inquiry on 12/12, the chair made it clear that they must decide on MLA interviews before making decisions for telephone interviews.
