Agnes Scott College - transnational feminism - OFFER MADE & ACCEPTED[]

  • The Agnes Scott College Women's Studies Program invites applications for a tenure-track position in transnational feminism to begin fall 2012. Ph.D. in Women's Studies preferred, but candidates with a graduate certificate (or equivalent) in Women's Studies and a Ph.D. in a related field also are invited to apply. The teaching load is 3/2, including courses in transnational feminism, feminist research methods, and, possibly, service-learning/internship. The successful candidate will possess the ability to teach a socially and economically diverse student population and a commitment to both scholarship and service.   • Did the folks that received inquiries about NWSA attendance indicate that that they would be available to interview at NWSA in their letters?
    • I got an inquiry, and I did not indicate if I was going to NWSA in my job letter. I would be interested to hear how others responded. I said that I would be attending NWSA if I have interviews (hopefully that was ok to say). Since I am now only adjuncting, I don't have any conference funds, which makes possibly having to go to NWSA and MLA very very difficult.
    • Hi, it is nice to see that people in this field are bonding together to share info. Ok, I didn't state that I was attending precisely for the same reason of not knowing if I will get any interview. So in my email reply, I say that I would be happy to do interviews over skype, phone as stated in the email. I probably "may" attend NWSA if I get another request for interview. So it seems like a selected 10 or few people are asked about whether they will attend or not?

    • I got the same email and replied similarly to those above. I stated that I was waiting to hear back from a few schools before confirming my conference attendance. I also stated that I wanted to make my plans definite soon and inquired as to when I might hear back about an interview or not. The response I got back was friendy and stated that last week was fall break and that most likely candidates would hear back about interviews mid to end of this week.

  • I had a NWSA interview and just recieved the following email that I presume was sent to all interviewees: "I am writing to update you about the search for a scholar of Transnational Feminism at Agnes Scott College. As often is the case with such endeavors, circumstances have conspired to scuttle our original calendar. We definitely are proceeding with the search and remain very interested in your candidacy. We are in the process of determining which of the many strong applicants will be invited to campus and will be in touch as soon as possible about next steps. " (1/4) X

  • Rejection email 2/6 stating they had approximately 125 applicants, interviewed 23 of the strongest and selected three for campus interviews.
    • Just a comment on the unevenness of the whole process across institutions: 23 interviews?? Wow! There are R-1 institutions that just bring out candidates without the preliminaries. I find this really interesting. I think it's pretty cool that Agnes Scott interviewed so many people, it must have been incredibly time consuming.

Arizona State University, Barrett Honors College -- DEADLINE PASSED[]

  • Primary responsibility will be to teach the first-year seminar, a two-semester interdisciplinary examination of important ideas from the earliest writing to the present. Special attention is given to critical thinking and argumentative writing skills.

  • Lecturer of Women's and Gender Studies. The Women's and Gender Studies Program at Coastal Carolina University invites application for a full-time lecturer, appointment effective August 16, 2012. This is a nine-month position (with benefits) subject to annual renewal.

  • The Connecticut College Department of Gender and Women's Studies invites applications for a one-year position, renewable for a second year, at the level of Assistant Professor, with appointment beginning July 1, 2012. The successful candidate will have teaching and research that demonstrates engagement of gender with race and sexuality as concepts and realities that have challenged feminist orthodoxies and contributed to intersectional analyses and movements. Focus of research should include the United States understood comparatively and transnationally. The person hired for the position should be able to teach "Introduction to Queer Studies," "Transnational Women's Movements," "Training in Transformation" (our field placement) and a first year seminar, "Reading Race, Reading Gender," as well as a course on her or his own research. In lieu of a sixth course, the person hired will serve as a "Fellow" in the College's Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity, helping to develop programs (such as a speakers series, a film series, or workshops for the campus community) that engage intersectional movements and scholarship. Duke University - Women's Studies, 2 Postdoc Fellowships -- OFFER MADE[]

  • The Program in Women's Studies at Duke University invites applications for two residential postdoctoral fellowships for the 2012-13 academic year. Applications will be considered from colleagues working on Feminism and Freedom. We conceived the topic in response to the recent uprising in North Africa and West Asia, but are interested in an array of investigations, including how feminism has fought for various forms of freedom, scrutinized its historical emergence, and deployed the term in a variety of discursive contexts. Also relevant are analyses that address the anti-feminist dimensions of freedom projects. We are interested in transnational, intersectional, and interdisciplinary research that take(s) an innovative approach to understanding the social, political, economic, and cultural implications of freedom. We welcome empirical, textual, philosophical, and theoretical projects from a diverse array of academic fields, political and cultural contexts, and historical periods. The aim of the 2012-13 Women's Studies Postdoctoral Program is to provide a space for generative intellectual conversations between visiting scholars and Duke faculty in different disciplines. Successful proposals will be interdisciplinary in nature and demonstrate the applicant's knowledge of gender studies. Postdoctoral fellows will be included in a faculty-graduate seminar on the theme and are expected to be in residence for the academic year. Fellows will teach one course. The fellowship includes a stipend, health insurance, office space, and clerical support.

  • re the "applicant monitoring form": i'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts (for this or other jobs) about whether it's bad or not to just not fill it out? as a trans person i always get uncomfortable with either/or male female boxes, but i don't really want to out myself as trans through this kind of form...
    • I once had a job compiling the data from these forms; basically the department uses it as proof that they are following the AA/EOE rules as much as possible, and to demonstrate that they didn't, for example, only interview white candidates even though the pool of applicants was mostly non-white. It really does help the university if people fill them out, but most people don't (I think we got less than 30%.) The problem is that not everyone fits the boxes: usually the categories on the form are determined by some mix of state law and the school governing body. I asked the HR office about this and I was basically told that they had all the categories they needed. So that's a long winded way of saying - the people who are collecting data ask about what they are concerned about, they generally are out of touch, and even if you are sending the search form directly to the department it's probably being compiled by someone who is going to just send it to the external HR people who, once again, just don't care. So... part of me says, fill it out and make the HR people actually think about the ridiculousness of their categories, but really, the answer is you can just ignore it. Most people do.
    • It was my impression that the forms are anonymous and don't have your name on it. I would say fill it out, cross out and modify the categories and show HR how diverse or non-diverse the applicant pool is.

I am wondering if this is because I have a Ph.D. in English, with a certificate in Women's and Gender Studies, rather than a Ph.D. in WGS. I have eight years experience as a faculty member in a women's and gender studies program, and so thought I might be a good fit for this job. I understand how flooded the market is with jobseekers, and that the chances of actually landing this job were slim, but to not even have my application read by the department is incredibly disheartening. Anyone else have this happen?

I e-mailed HR and was told I could resubmit my application if I thought I had the minimium requirements. I just resubmitted my application (all you have to do is: go back to the posting, hit apply, and re-fill out the questions and just hit "yes" to the question if you have a PhD in Women's Studies). I figure the search committee can make the decision of if they consider a PhD in English and a Graduate Certificate in Women's Studies a suitable substitution or not.

  • Totally agree with poster directly above. I totally appreciate WS jobs actually requiring a PhD in WS. Those of us with PhDs in WS are NOT considered for jobs in disciplines - like English, Sociology, Political Science, IR, Geography, etc, etc. WS is an INTERdisciplinary field, and WS programs must start prioritizing those of us with PhDs in WS or we just end up without jobs. Period. My 2c.
    • From one of the two above -- I have graduate degrees in both English and WGS and had a VAP in WGS. Really, I think what it all comes down to is fit and what the search committee really wants in terms of scholarly research and teaching interests/experience. We all have to apply for jobs interdisciplinarily when our work is such. And for those of us who do queer studies, it isn't often that job ads specifically ask for someone doing LGBTQ studies.

  • In response to this, my interview was scheduled after the 31st, and I might be confused but I understood those interviewed to be on the long short-list. This doesn't mean that others on the long short-list won't get phone or skype interviews.
  • I assume those of us who were invited to interview at NWSA before the closing date were "stronger" applicants who applied before the Nov. 7 deadline. And, their timeline is to bring people out for real interviews in January/early Feb and make an offer by March.

The email addresses for the two emails are different, and I think everyone should have gotten the survey request. The writing sample is a request for additional materials from the committee - though it probably doesn't mean one is completely out of the running.

Since the request specifies a 48 hours window period, it seems that they are trying to meet their deadline specifically stated in the application that they want to do skype or phone interviews by January and then campus visit for February. I sent in an article instead of a diss chapter just cos diss chapter is just way too least for mine. I hope they are still requesting more materials from other candidates. More people need to be recognized for the excellent work that they do!

I got this request AND a general response/request to fill out the employment survey from separate email addresses. I don't think anything seems unusual here, just that they've likely narrowed the initial field and are considering who they're going to interview. Given that they are requesting additional writing samples from other people AFTER the 48 hour window they gave me, I'd assume that they are moving through a list of potential interviewees and requesting additional materials as they narrow the pool. If you haven't gotten a request yet, I wouldn't assume that this means you are out of the running.

  • Dr. Kathleen O’Reilly (Department of Geography, Texas A&M University, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (Global Development: Water, Sanitation, Health Program) funded project entitled “Successful Sanitation Habits in Rural India.” This 12-month position is available starting January 2012 and runs through December 2013. Questions / Advice / Discussion[]

Q: I was wondering why some job ads just want the name of your references and other ads request the letters? Is there any advantage to sending the letters even though they have only asked for the name of your references? I'm using interfolio if that matters.

A (12/28/2011): Interesting question. Having been on a couple of search committees, I'd say that:

- The reason why not all positions request letters is that it's a lot of work, collectively, for recommenders to write and send letters (even electronically), so if a search committee can make a long list based on the other materials (cover letter, CV, writing samples, teaching evaluations etc.), it makes sense not to request letters upfront. The issue, for a search committee, of going this route is mainly time, since it adds a couple of weeks to the timeline (i.e. once the committee has met and decided on a long list, it then has to request the letters and give recommenders time to send them).

- I don't think there's going to be a real advantage to having letters sent, at least in most cases, and it could possibly be seen as slightly annoying, particularly if a position attracts hundreds of applications and the search committee already has a mass of material to go through for the initial review. I mean, unless your letter is written by the leader in your subfield and says that you are *the* most stellar candidate for the job ... but if that's the case, presumably your other materials will draw the attention of the search committee as well.

Q: If the deadline passed, and you still haven't submitted, Is it acceptable to apply late? Will applications ever be considered still?

  • From my limited experience having served on SCs at 2 different institutions, I can only say, "It depends." In senior searches, SCs may continue to accept applications past the advertised deadline. In junior searches that yield hundreds of applications, SCs may confine their pool of candidates to those who submitted before the deadline. HR departments at some schools create and implement detailed rules that SCs are supposed to follow strictly; these rules may include not considering applications that arrive after the advertised deadline.
  • Interesting. Thanks for your response. I suppose since it depends, I may as well send in the late application as you never know. I appreciate the advice.
  • When I've been on search committees for junior faculty, I've specifically avoided reading late applications. If someone can't be bothered to apply on time, it suggests that organizational skills and deadlines are a problem. Why would a department interview them? In this market?

Q: Is it worth the time & money for non-Canadians to apply for jobs in Canada, when they put Canadian applications first?

  • Non-Canadians do sometimes get hired, but their records have to be demonstrably significant and/or utterly unique. So it's worth submitting, but only if you have an exemplary record.
  • Canadian universities hire foreigners all the time. Look at any department in Canada and you will see a mix of Canadian and non-Canadian faculty. Nationality does not decide the hire by any means, and getting work visas for foreign faculty is not as difficult or expensive in Canada as it is in the US. It is woth applying. Many jobs in Canada garner weak candidate pools much smaller than in the U.S. Even with a citizen or residency preference, your odds may in fact be better in Canada than the U.S.

Q: What do you do if you're asked for a conference interview, which you were not planning on attending? Do you offer to set up a phone/skype interview or are you automatically crossed off the list?

  • You go to the conference! Interviews are hard to get.
  • Or you ask them if a phone interview is possible.

  • Actually, I've called two jobs and they both said that skype would be fine. I'm in Canada and my semester starts Jan 3--missing the first week of classes would be a bit extreme. So, it doesn't hurt to ask, even at the early stages, if it saves you from spending lots of $ you don't have, or don't have for the mla, or if it keeps you from missing important things. Skype is becoming more part of the customs and from what I know from friends, hasn't so far as I can tell, hurt their on-campus visit schedule
