Agnes Scott College invites applications for a tenure-track position at the assistant rank for a scholar with a cross-disciplinary background in the fields of international relations and women’s studies with an interest in human rights. This position is part of a cluster hire with a geographic focus on the Middle East.

The 3/2 teaching load will include at least one course supporting the college’s global learning initiative and upper-level courses in the candidate’s specialty. Additional courses could include Introduction to Human Rights, Feminist Research Methodology, and/or courses on international law and organizations.

PhD in Political Science, Women’s Studies, or a related field preferred; advanced ABDs considered.

The Department of Gender Studies at Central European University seeks to hire a fulltime Assistant Professor in the area of Gender, Policy, and Global Inequalities.

We seek a scholar who combines critical analysis of policy conceptualization and practice with a gendered critique of macro level inequalities and material realities of the contemporary world. Disciplinary background and regional specialization are open; interdisciplinary and intersectional approaches are preferred. We envision a social science scholar whose research and teaching focus on one or more of the following through the lens of gender: development, environmental issues, economic relations (capitalism and its alternatives), transnational governance, im/migration, and/or resistance to state, corporate, and institutional power. The Department of Women's and Gender Studies and the Department of African American Studies at The College of New Jersey are seeking a historian of African American women to fill a tenure track joint faculty position, starting August 25, 2015. The successful candidate will teach courses such as African American Women's History and Feminist and Womanist Theory, as well as courses in her/his area of research. Candidate's field of research must be in African American Women's History.

Candidate must have completed a Ph.D. in US History or US/American Studies or African American Studies with a focus in African American Women's History. The candidate must also have a graduate certificate in Women's and Gender Studies or demonstrate extensive teaching and research in Women's and Gender Studies. Candidate must have a strong commitment to the education of undergraduates.

Position Summary: the Feminist & Gender Studies program (FGS) at Colorado College invites applications for a tenure track appointment at the Assistant Professor level. The FGS program is interdisciplinary in nature, and currently has one full-time faculty member and eleven core members. This position will be the second full-time faculty member in FGS, and thus we seek a candidate that can complement our current existing strengths. The successful candidate would teach Introduction to Feminist & Gender Studies, Feminist Methods, and Feminist Theory among other courses. We are open to various research and teaching interests, but preference will be given to candidates whose scholarship draws on one or more of the following topics or approaches: gender and sexuality, queer theory, eco-feminisms, performance, disability studies, science and technology, and/or transnational feminisms. Since FGS is interdisciplinary, we are particularly interested in candidates who can collaborate with other departments and programs across campus. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to undergraduate liberal arts education and have an active research profile.

The College has a unique academic system (“the Block Plan”) in which professors teach, and students take, one course at a time. Each block is three and a half weeks long, with an academic year of eight and a half blocks. The standard faculty load is six blocks per year, with a maximum of 25 students per course.

  • Seems like an inside hire, frankly. All three candidates are either one search committee member's former student or from Duke in some way... Was this ever a real search? <--- This is actually only true of one candidate.
  • No, sorry - one is from Duke, one from Rutgers, where a prominent search committee member was until recently, and one is their own former postdoc, also that person's student. Sorry, but this seems like nepotism.
    • I completely understand your frustration.  Unfortunately, the academic hiring process is not based on merit.  Duke is not alone in this.  So many other factors go into hiring someone that rejection is rarely an indication of inferiority.  For example, check out this article on the power of the top-tier program.
    • I appreciate the sympathy. But I am from a top-tier and still lose out to nepotism each time. How can women's studies be as corrupt as the old boys' clubs elsewhere? This was a fake search (see also Clayman Gender postdoc at Stanford...)

Position Summary: Gettysburg College invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor in the interdisciplinary Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program (http://www.gettysburg.edu/academics/wgs ) beginning August 2015.

Qualifications: The successful candidate must have graduate training in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies with a specialization LGBT, Queer, or Sexuality Studies. Teaching experience is encouraged. We are open to a variety of theoretical and disciplinary approaches to the area of specialization and have an interest in candidates prepared to teach a course in the psychology of gender. We also welcome candidates with expertise in global sexualities to apply. Candidates must have a commitment to teaching and advising in the liberal arts tradition, be engaged in a strong research program, and are encouraged to involve undergraduate students in their research.   • Getty for KU? Anyone have a hunch as to why? Maybe I have bad ideas about the KU area, but I always thought the location of Gettysburg was ideal for a variety of reasons. Was is location? Department? College?
  • I imagine that it comes down to personal preference.  Having lived in both towns, I would totally pick KU over Gettysburg any day.  Lawrence is a liberal college town (albeit in conservative KS), while Gettysburg is more of a rural tourist town.  It depends on what type of students you want, the size of the town you prefer, etc.

The LGBT Studies Program at HWS invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the assistant or associate professor level beginning July 1, 2015. Candidates must have a Ph.D., by the start date, with an expertise in LGBT studies and queer studies, and approach scholarship and teaching from an interdisciplinary perspective. We seek a scholar working at the intersection of questions of race, gender, and sexuality in literary and/or visual texts in the contemporary U.S.

We are particularly interested in candidates whose work does not replicate the College's current strengths in African American literature; comparative work is welcome. Successful candidates will demonstrate command of key methodological and theoretical perspectives in both gender studies and literary studies. Desirable additional fields or areas of strength include film and visual culture, critical race theory, drama and performance. We expect the successful candidate to have excellent preparation in literary texts from the twentieth century (and after), and must have prior interdisciplinary graduate training and teaching experience in women and gender studies. A Ph.D. in a relevant field is required by the time of appointment.

  • I use interfolio so it's a bit complicated. Though I included the interfolio email addresses for the letters in my application a month ago, interfolio didn't send the letters until yesterday, I assume because they were never prompted to do so until then. I assume that if I had given direct emails of the letter writers they would not have received the promts until yesterday either. Until I saw this I wasn't sure if it was a mistake on Interfolio's end or if this was their way of passively requesting letters (that they already had access to).
  • This is really weird.  The job ad reads "the required information input in the reference contact information section of your application will be utilized to send a system-derived email requesting a recommendation letter from each reference".  So I assumed, as did my letter writers, that an upload prompt would come from SLU.  Only now am I finding out that prompts were never generated and my letter writers didn't upload anything on my behalf.  It's infuriating!
  • Same as the writer above. Assumed requests would be sent to my referees but they weren't. I checked my application page and noticed that it's now possible to send requests, but there is also a bar that says 'Solicited', and it says 'No' for all of my referees.   • I noticed this too, but I noticed before the deadline and people uploaded letters. However, I rechecked again and one person didn't upload so I sent the reminder for a second time. My guess is that they're noticing a lot of issues with the letter stuff, so I would have your people upload letters now and see what happens. If the rest of your materials meets what they're looking for, they'll request the letters. So I wouldn't take this to mean you're out of the running yet.  (12/6)

  • Thanks for the info. To be honest I think that it is really inconsiderate for St. Lawrence to have asked for so much material up-front INCLUDING letters of rec. If they knew that they would only solicit letters for short listed candidates they should have done what most departments do-simply ask for a job letter, CV, writting sample and names of references. I feel like I waisted my time and my letter writters time submitting so much material. The job market is already very stressful there is simply no need to add more time and stress to the process.

University of Oregon - Visiting Assistant Professor in Women's and Gender Studies[]

The successful candidate will teach five to six classes, be in residence three quarters between September 2015 and June 2016, hold office hours and advise students, and participate in department meetings and events.

A PhD required, disciplinary field and area of specialization are open.  Candidates that can contribute to the required areas of the curriculum are especially encouraged to apply.   These areas include queer studies, race, class, gender, global feminisms, feminist theory, gender and literature, and gender and history.  Strengths in the area of race, queer studies and gender and literature will help us fill critical gaps in the curriculum next year.  Teaching experience is preferred.

University of Puget Sound (WA) - Visiting Assistant Professor in Religion and Gender & Queer Studies[]

Two-year Visiting Assistant Professor, full-time position, to begin fall 2015. Candidate will hold a joint appointment in the Department of Religion and the Gender & Queer Studies Program. Responsibilities: Teach six courses each year over two semesters: three courses in Religion, and three in Gender & Queer Studies. In Gender & Queer Studies the candidate will teach a 200-level introduction to gender, feminism and queer studies, will develop an upper-level theory and/or methods class on gender and queer studies and feminist thought, and will possibly teach other 300-level seminars on gender and/or queer studies based on candidate's area of expertise. In Religion the candidate will teach 200-level (introductory) survey course(s) and/or 300-level seminars. The candidate may also teach a first-year writing seminar. Qualifications: Ph.D. (ABD considered) with strong background both in Religious Studies and in Gender & Queer Studies and/or feminist thought. Candidates in Queer Studies particularly welcomed. In Religious Studies, candidates who can complement the department’s existing strengths would be welcomed, particularly those specializing in Biblical studies, religion in Africa or the United States, American religious history, Jewish studies, environmental ethics, or religion and the environment.

University of Wisconsin at Madison (WI) - Visiting Assistant Professor in Gender and Disability[]

The Department of Gender and Women's Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is looking to hire a Visiting Assistant Professor for the academic year 2015-2016 in Gender and Disability. The VAP will teach two courses a semester, four courses for the year. Three of these courses must work at the intersections of disability and gender; there is greater flexibility for the fourth course. Ideally candidates will be able to teach the courses Visualizing Bodies and Disability and Gender in Film in the Fall semester, but this is not a requirement. The contract year for this position runs from August 24, 2015 through May 22, 2016 and includes a full benefits package.

Candidates should have a PhD in hand by August 24, 2015 in Disability Studies, Gender and Women's Studies or another relevant discipline. Beginning salary is $43,772. If the Ph.D. is not in hand by this date, the candidate may be hired as a Visiting Instructor at a lower salary.

Wake Forest University (NC) - Postdoctoral Fellowship - Gender, Race, and Politics[]

The Anna Julia Cooper Center on Gender, Race and Politics in the South at Wake Forest University invites applications for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship on gender, race, and politics.

We invite scholars engaged in research on intersectional questions of gender and race to apply. Applicants are welcome from a broad range of social science disciplines with the expectation of ability to teach courses for the Department of Politics and International Affairs. Applicants must have the ability to teach in one or more areas engaged with any of the following: political theory, political history, political institutions, political behavior, or human and civil rights and law in the U.S. and/or international contexts.

The AJC Center Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to teach two courses each semester in the Department of Politics and International Affairs; to be involved with and present at AJC Center events; to present annually and participate monthly in the AJC Center faculty research seminars; and to host, along with the AJC Center director, at least four meetings each semester with the AJC Center undergraduate research fellows to discuss research; and to undertake additional responsibilities associated with the AJC Center.

Washington University in St. Louis (MO) - Postdoctoral Fellowship in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies[]

The Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program at Washington University in St. Louis seeks to fill a two-year post-doctoral appointment to begin in the 2015-16 academic year in the field of transnational feminisms or gender and sexuality outside of the U.S.  We are particularly interested in scholars who have training in social science methodologies. The responsibilities of this appointment include teaching one course per semester and continuing to engage in research.  

Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States and have received the doctorate after July 1, 2010 and before July 1, 2015.
