University of Virginia (USA, VA)- Assistant or Associate Professor of Sexuality Studies []

Any news? (05/12) No news here (06/12) Nothing (16/12) Nothing! (24/12) Nothing here! (25/12)  Still nothing?! (12 Jan) Has anyone heard anything? (22 Jan)  What's going on with their search? Has the been cancelled?

Yeah, 10 weeks without even soliciting the additional materials/letters of rec might indicate a disfunctional dept and/or a search that's about to fail.  Just speculating, but this doesn't bode well. They're so disorganized that the search is about to run smack into the secondary/VAP season and make a  mess for everybody (assuming it happens at all).    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What I've heard through the rumor mill is that this search is aimed at finding someone who will eventually step in as director of the program. So they might have moved forward with only established assistant profs or associates. It would be helpful to know if anyone who falls into these categories has heard anything.

FYI, visits have already taken place. At least two are already established folks.

Anyone heard anything? (11/11) x2

[11/17] Nothing.

11/18 On a different forum (soc pro boards), someone posted that the department planned to contact candidates for campus visits in January. There were no details as to why or if they had done Skype interviews already. It seems odd to have a closing date 9/29 and then wait until January to first contact candidates. Does anyone have any more details? 11/26 To respond to this: I was contacted on 11/5 to schedule a zoom interview on 11/21 with the proviso that if selected for the shortlist the campus visit would be for late January.

11/25 I've heard they are attempting to get a second line--might explain the delay.

Responding to the above: that would be wonderful! This can be hard to get admin to sign off on. I hope they get it! If anyone has anyone news about this please share. Congrats to folks who got a campus invite!

01/11 Rejection received with the proviso that if the second line is made, that they will reconsider.

NOTES: Did anyone hear anything about this job?

They allegedly had a long list by the end of September. I heard this position might be one of those searches that already has a candidate, but that could just be a rumor/speculation. (Though I suppose that could explain the deadline error mentioned below)

Deadline seems to have been listed incorrectly on here; both the career center and the HigherEd jobs ad list September 13 as the due date UPDATED NOTES: I think this originally said "October 1" because that's what it said in Chronicle Vitae. I just confirmed with the department that the September 13th deadline was what they meant. There was no mention of the mistake.

2/20: They just sent a request for an adjunct to teach " WGS 240 Introduction to LGBTQ Studies or WGS 241
Introduction to Sexuality Studies" to the WMST-L list-serve. Does this mean they hired someone and this adjunct is needed for the course release? Or did the search fail?

Denison UniversityDenison University (Granville, Ohio) - Assistant Professor, Data Analytics, Tenure Track[]

Job Summary and Requirements: Denison University seeks to hire a tenure-track faculty member to further develop its new interdisciplinary program in Data Analytics to start in the Fall of 2020. Candidates must have earned a Ph. D. no later than August 2020, and have a broad and deep formal education in a humanities discipline and in data-driven approaches to research in that discipline. The successful applicant will be actively engaged in research that applies advanced data analytics techniques to significant literary, historical, philosophical, cultural, linguistic, or artistic inquiry. The successful applicant will also be committed to teaching undergraduate students in an interdisciplinary setting.

New hires are normally made at the rank of Assistant Professor, but hiring at an advanced rank may be possible with significant prior experience. For more information on Denison's Data Analytics program, please visit http://denison.edu/academics/data-analytics. We seek to hire an individual with deep and innovative background in the humanities and data analysis that is representative of the applied, interdisciplinary nature of Data Analytics. This individual will join an existing group of interdisciplinary faculty to continue to grow and develop the Data Analytics major within our liberal arts curriculum. The candidate will have an opportunity to infuse quantitative and digital humanities examples into our curriculum, and to help raise the level of data-driven humanistic research, awareness, and integration at Denison and in the broader community.

Consequently, candidates for the position must have significant formal education in analytics, and actively engage in research that uses or develops advanced data analytics techniques. The ideal candidate will hold a Ph. D. in a humanities discipline or in a data science field, and their research should significantly emphasize data-driven techniques and quantitative approaches to questions within the humanities. Candidates must demonstrate successful teaching at the undergraduate level and a strong desire for pedagogical and curricular innovation within a liberal arts environment. We are seeking energetic self-starters who have a passion for bridging traditional disciplinary boundaries and an interest in linking the classroom to the wider faculty and community.

Teaching responsibilities will include core courses for the Data Analytics major (course specifics can be found at https://denison.edu/academics/data-analytics/courses), as well as the potential to design and teach courses in the candidate's data analytic specialty. The typical teaching load is 5 courses per year. The Data Analytics Program is growing rapidly at Denison, and is currently among the largest majors on campus, with more than 120 students. As interdisciplinary majors, all students choose a domain area in which to develop disciplinary knowledge in addition to the core Data Analytics skills. Thus, candidates will have an opportunity to creatively engage with students across broad demographic, academic, and career interests, to apply and connect their skill sets.

The Denison faculty is a community of teacher-scholars. Therefore, candidates must also have a clearly articulated, productive research program related to Data Analytics that is able to accommodate undergraduate research and flourish in a liberal arts environment. Denison hosts a vibrant and well-funded undergraduate research program, and offers competitive professional development funds and a pre-tenure research leave following a successful third-year review. Strong resources exist to support and mentor teaching - for example, the Center for Learning and Teaching, Teaching Matters discussions, and workshops to help new faculty transition. Finally, successful candidates will demonstrate their interest in contributing to campus governance and the life of the broader Denison community. Individuals with a demonstrated interest in community outreach are especially desirable.

Denison University is an increasingly diverse, highly selective, residential liberal arts college enrolling approximately 2,300 students from across the nation and around the world. We are located thirty miles from Columbus, Ohio, the state capital, which hosts a wide range of cultural and artistic opportunities.

University of Michigan, Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) (USA:MI) - Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Michigan in Women's Health - Deadline 1 February 2020[]

The Project

Prof. Sara McClelland (Psychology & Women’s Studies, University of Michigan) is seeking to hire a postdoctoral fellow to coordinate a multi-site, mixed methods project dedicated to understanding racial and gendered stereotypes related to abortion attitudes.

Individuals’ attitudes towards motherhood, sexual relations, and poverty are framed by historical discourses about gender and race, including women’s sexual and fiscal irresponsibility. These stereotypes create a set of social cues that shape who is imagined when respondents are asked about their moral and legal attitudes towards abortion. Because abortion survey measures frequently rely on individuals’ evaluations of women’s moral, sexual, and financial conditions -- and these concepts are frequently linked with women of color -- survey responses may not be accurately capturing individuals’ attitudes about abortion, but instead, reflect individuals’ attitudes about race, gender, and deservingness. In order to more accurately measure attitudes toward abortion, researchers must, one, identify the role of racial and gender stereotypes as they relate to abortion, and two, effectively measure these parallel attitudes in order to understand and model their influence on survey responses.

This project aims to contribute to several key areas, including: (1) stereotypes and their influence on measurement; (2) effective measurement of individuals’ attitudes towards marginalized groups; and (3) the scientific study of abortion attitudes.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of Prof. Sara McClelland, faculty in the Women’s Studies and Psychology Departments at the University of Michigan, the fellow will assume mentored responsibility for: (1) advancing research projects, analyzing associated data, writing manuscripts, and submitting these for publication; (2) developing and testing survey and interview-based measures; (3) managing the logistics of field-based research, including ethics review, financial reporting, travel and logistics, etc.; and (4) supervising students, trainees, and volunteers who contribute to these efforts. Ability to travel occasionally to project sites, both regional and national, is required.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a doctoral degree in a field relevant to this project (e.g., psychology, medical sociology, medical anthropology, social work, public health). Other desirable qualifications include:

  • Record of scholarly publication, including first-authored journal articles
  • Expertise in research design, survey and/or qualitative data analysis (e.g., thematic, content analysis, ethnography)
  • Experience working with research related to women’s health, abortion, or reproductive justice in the U.S.
  • Prior supervision of research team and/or coordination of research activities
  • Current knowledge of issues related to reproductive justice and abortion

Applicants who will have completed the doctoral degree by September 1, 2020 are eligible to apply. Those holding professional terminal degrees such as a J.D. or M.P.H. are not eligible.

To apply:

Email the following items in one PDF with the surname as the first word of the PDF file: (1) cover letter stating long-term career aims, interest in the project, and suitability for the position, specifically referring to the criteria listed above; (2) curriculum vitae; (3) two or three relevant publications that you were responsible for the majority of analysis and writing; and (4) contact information for three potential references. Applications should be emailed to Leanna Papp: lpapp@umich.edu.

Salary: $45-60,000 (depending on experience) plus benefits. Information about available benefits can be found here .

Start date: Sept. 1, 2020 Location: Ann Arbor, MI

Deadline: Application deadline is February 1, 2020

Other information:

This project is expected to be ongoing and is dependent on funding. The research fellow position will be hired on an annual basis with renewal depending on continued funding and satisfactory performance.

The fellowship is housed in the Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG). Founded in 1995, IRWG promotes faculty research on women, gender, and sexuality and is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

For additional information regarding the PI, associated research, and project institutions, see Sara McClelland’s research website and faculty profile . For additional information regarding the project or the post, please email: Professor Sara McClelland (saramcc@umich.edu)
