Founded in 1855, Berea College achieved national distinction as the first coeducational and interracial college in the South. Berea has a longstanding commitment to interracial education and is one of the most racially diverse private liberal arts colleges in the United States. With an emphasis on service to Appalachia and beyond, Berea enrolls 1,600 students from 43 states and U.S. territories and more than 70 countries. Berea College only admits students who are unable to afford tuition and provides all of them a no-tuition promise, valued at more than $178,000 over four years. Berea’s students excel in the College’s supportive yet demanding academic environment, and many are the first in their families to graduate college. As one of nine federally recognized Work Colleges, all Berea students hold a position in which they work 10-12 hours weekly. In 2021, Berea College once again topped the list of “Best Value Colleges” in the nation in The Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education (THE) College Rankings. Berea’s no-tuition model contributed to its No. 1 best-value ranking. Forbes cited a 2021 study of nearly 400 colleges in the United States, in which Berea College ranks second in terms of affordability and academic quality. And in 2021 The Princeton Review cited Berea College as “one of the nation’s best institutions for undergraduates to earn their college degree.” The publication also recognized Berea as a Best Value College, based on academic rigor, affordability and graduates’ career outcomes; a Best Green College; and a Tuition-Free School.

Located where the Bluegrass Region meets the Cumberland Mountains, the town of Berea (pop. 16,000) lies forty miles south of Lexington and is approximately two hours from Cincinnati, Louisville, and Knoxville. More information about Berea College is available at www.berea.edu.

The New School (New York, NY, USA), Assistant Professor of Public Humanities (Deadline: Nov 15th; Review begins Nov 16 until fulfilled)[]

https://careers.newschool.edu/postings/20483

The New School is seeking an Assistant Professor of Public Humanities to teach in the Liberal Arts program in the Bachelor’s Program for Adults and Transfer Students in the Schools of Public Engagement (SPE). The renewable term appointment will begin July 1, 2022.

We seek a scholar with a research and teaching program that merges humanities-based inquiry with innovative forms of public engagement, reaching audiences both within and outside academia. As a member of the interdisciplinary adult bachelor’s program, this hire will advance the mission of SPE through pedagogy that encourages students to be civically engaged actors and prepares them for community-based, creative, and /or applied work beyond the classroom. While we will consider scholars from a wide range of disciplines within the humanities, we have a particular interest in candidates whose research engages interdisciplinary fields and who have degrees from programs such as American Studies, Critical Race and Ethnicity Studies, Cultural Studies, Performance Studies, Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and Environmental Studies. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated record of social justice advocacy. Preference will also be given to candidates whose research addresses historically underrepresented groups and/or marginalized communities, spaces, and places.

The New School’s Bachelor’s Program for Adults and Transfer Students offers a self-designed liberal arts education where students can pursue a nontraditional path toward degree completion. Through credit granting programs such as Prior Learning and Self Directed Learning, students reflect on their experiences outside the classroom and execute projects under the guidance of our faculty. Many of our students work full time and are returning to school having pursued careers in a wide variety of fields. As such, they represent a highly self-motivated student body with diverse work experiences and backgrounds.

As part of the Schools of Public Engagement at The New School, the Bachelor’s Program for Adults and Transfer Students values traditional modes of scholarship (e.g., peer reviewed journal articles and books directed at scholarly or general audiences) and creative practice in different media (e.g., films, performance, art exhibitions, and other curatorial projects). Ideal candidates for this position would complement the faculty through public facing scholarship and practice.

The New School, a private university in New York City’s Greenwich Village, serves undergraduate and graduate students across a range of fields with a commitment to bringing practices in design and social research to studying issues of our time and challenging students to become engaged citizens dedicated to solving programs and contributing to the public good.

The New School is committed to actively recruiting applicants from a diverse pool and we encourage candidates from groups underrepresented in US higher education to apply. We recognize systemic barriers to higher education and employment and we aim to reduce barriers to careers in higher education through our required and preferred qualifications. We specifically invite applicants from communities who have been and continue to be marginalized from the humanities and liberal arts more broadly.

The New School is committed to creating and maintaining a diverse and inclusive learning environment that furthers equity, inclusion and social justice. We actively seek candidates whose experiences, teaching philosophies, and scholarly practice prepare them to expand and contribute to that commitment.

The New School does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, color, creed, sex or gender (including gender identity and expression), pregnancy, sexual orientation, religion, religious practices, mental or physical disability, national or ethnic origin, citizenship status, veteran status, marital or partnership status, or any other legally protected status.

Anyone heard anything from Butler University?

Has anyone heard anything from the TT search in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Wesleyan University? The application deadline was back on October 1st. 11/18 haven't heard anything.

11/19: I’m pretty sure they’ve done first-round interviews already (heard through a friend, haven’t gotten any official notice)

11/22 - rejection email recieved, 460 applications X2

--- 1/6: does anyone know whether Wesleyan has invited candidates to campus yet?

01/14: The search has been concluded, and a candidate hired.

11/22: Has anyone heard from Haverford? Very anxious to know if the "shortly before Thanksgiving" window has already passed.

-Second this! Hope someone can provide some updates. Thanks!

11/23: Requests for letters via Interfolio from Haverford— I guess they made their deadline.

--Sorry, new to this. Did people get a specific request, or just find that their Interfolio now was "incomplete" with the option for letters?

-- no need to apologize! In this case, received an email.

-- I did not get an email but the Interfolio says incomplete and now requires letters, so I'm confused.

-- same as above; no request, but incomplete on Interfolio.
--Letter requests were sent by email. The "incomplete" on interfolio is apparently a system glitch that cannot be resolved until the end of the holiday weekend.

-How do you know? 11/29

--UPDATE: Rejected from Haverford 11/29

--Received an email saying that they still have not received my recommendation letters after the first email request. I have not got the email request but loaded the letters in Interfolio. (12/6)

12/6 - First year on the market, can someone explain wtf these committees are doing with apps submitted two+ months ago?

--12/6- Long answer incoming. This is my second year on the market. There are 1000+ reasons that it takes a while to get back to applicants. Here are some guesses. (1) There are a ton of applications. Getting through 400+ applications can take quite some time. (2) Depending on whenever the deadline was, holiday breaks will cause delays. (3) Scheduling meetings to decide on candidates is rough. You have to get 3+ faculty member together at the same time.

In my experience, most interview requests come within 3-5 weeks after submission. If you haven't heard past 70+ days after submission, it is unlikely that you were selected for the long list. The longest time it took for a college to invite me to an interview was exactly 69 days, and that was because part of the search happened over the summer. Hope this helps.

-- 1/10 - Mine said this too when I checked, but I just got a generic HR email confirming they received materials and saying "the review process will begin in the near future." Status on the portal is back to "in progress." So, who knows.

---2/15 Still nothing from Buffalo, has anyone gotten an update?

I don't know the breakdown by rank. The search committee is still vetting all the applications and has not finalized short lists.

--Thank you for the explanation. Is there any new update? I guess the invitations for interviews have been sent out at this point (1/28).

--The committee is still vetting applications and has not yet met to work on creating an initial list. (2/1)
