Women’s and Gender Studies is a vibrant interdisciplinary program with longstanding connections to the feminist community in Antigonish, as well as to fourteen departments and interdisciplinary programs at StFX. Committed faculty members practise interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship, and develop programming for students who are intellectually and politically engaged with the Antigonish and StFX communities. Students take interdisciplinary core courses in WMGS taught by faculty appointed to the program, as well as cross-listed courses in other departments and programs. At present, faculty appointed to the WMGS program possess expertise in Canadian women’s history (especially the history of transnational feminisms); migrations, sexuality-precarity-illegality, development politics, movements, political ecology and indigeneity; and visual culture, power, and embodiment.
Applicants should possess a PhD in Gender, Feminist, and Women’s Studies and expand the program’s existing expertise. The successful applicant will teach core courses in the program, including WMGS 100: Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies as well as other core courses (for example, WMGS 205: Gender, Sexuality and the Body, WMGS 232: Gender and Popular Culture, WMGS 303: Feminist Theory, or WMGS 346: Critical Race and Sexuality Studies in Canada). Additionally, the successful candidate will also develop new interdisciplinary core courses for the program in their areas of specialization. These areas might include Black feminist theory, critical disability studies, critical race theory, Indigenous feminisms, sexuality studies, and trans studies.
