Instructions

Please add jobs in the following format and order them alphabetically by institution.

  1. Example University (State/Province, Country). Position Title. Specializations. Deadline. TT/NT. FT/PT. Link to Job ad(s). Updates:

TT/NT: Tenure-track or Non-tenure track.

FT/PT: Full-Time or Part-Time

For the sake of user-friendliness, please do not add more detailed content of the job ad on this page. (This is a departure from previous years, when these pages tended to become difficult to navigate. The new guidelines are modeled on more user-friendly Academic Wiki pages serving other disciplines.)

Add updates to the end of each entry as they come in: Additional materials requested, video interview scheduled, campus visit scheduled, offer extended, offer accepted, rejection received.

Word on the Street

This section is getting cluttered because people keep asking about the same jobs, so I've tried to condense them all to ONE THREAD PER JOB and put them in alphabetical order. Please add any new updates or questions to the existing thread instead of creating new ones.

    • (No updates here Nov. 14)

      • 2/26- I was invited for a campus visit late last week. The visits are in late March and early April.
    • 1/19 Invited to a Zoom interview in early Feb. More Materials requested as well.
    • Has anyone heard anything? No news here (1/8)
    • Also nothing (1/8) x2
      • Still nothing? It’s getting pretty late to start first round right? (1/17)
      • 1/18 nothing as of today, but wgss is my secondary field. I've also noticed in general most humanities programs are moving very slowly this year with interview invites.
  • ASU
    • 3/30. Does anybody remember a position that was WGSS teaching, remote for ASU? (Not the West Campus disability studies one). Did anybody ever hear back?
    • 4/3 Zoom interviews were the first week of February. No word since then
    • 4/29. Just got rejection, the online/remote teaching position has been filled.

      • Any word if campus visit been scheduled?
  • EMERSON COLLEGE
    • [Nov 1] Heard through the grapevine that Emerson has sent out interview requests
    • 11/6 - Does Emerson typically send rejections? I am assuming I didn't make it given that Zoom interviews have been scheduled already, but I prefer getting rid of the uncertainty when possible.
      • It's quite common for search committees to not send rejections until the finalist accepts the job offer :(
      • And sometimes they never send an email even after an offer has been accepted!
    • 11/20 - Anything from Emerson College after first round of Zoom interviews (11/7-11/9)?
    • [11/20] Nothing here
    • 1/12/24. Received rejection email so very likely this position has been filled.
  • EMORY UNIVERSITY
    • From the confirmation email: "Review of materials begins on November 1, though submissions will be accepted through December 1, 2023. If your application is selected for further consideration, we plan to contact you around December 7, 2023. Please make sure your application includes updated contact information. Candidates who are contacted will be asked to upload three reference letters as quickly as possible. Candidates will also be scheduled for initial Zoom interviews between 9 am and 5 pm EST on December 14 or 15. We thank you for noting these dates on your calendar."
      • Has anyone been contacted? • Not yet 12/8 x4
      • I tried to keep the 14th/15th open but still no news from Emory. I guess I assumed they would send rejections then, too, but perhaps we're meant to interpret no news as bad news. [12/11]
      • If you look on Interfolio there is a place to upload letters and syllabus.. which means if you haven't heard back, it's over, sadly.
        • This is good info to have...but has anyone actually heard from them? I am just looking for a firm reason to move on.
        • Anyone know if Zoom interviews happened in the end? [12/14]
  • GRINNELL COLLEGE
    • (Nov 6) Friend got an interview at Grinnell
    • [11/20] Does anyone have updates about campus visits at Grinnell following Zoom interviews? (11/20 - nothing here)
    • 1/8 Rejection e-mail saying the position is filled
  • HAMILTON COLLEGE
    • Request for more materials came through via Interfolio status change (10/30). Emailed to confirm. Zoom interviews will be planned for early December
      • Which of the Hamilton positions is this?
        • Sorry! Yes for the queer studies job
        • 10/30 Received request from Hamilton for additional materials for the race/transnational feminism position
      • Did your application status change to incomplete with this update? Trying to figure out if the review button happens for everyone or just those they want more materials from.
        • I didn't get an email and my Interfolio still says complete, but if I go in I can see that they're requesting more materials although I can't upload anything. So I'm assuming everyone can see it but only ppl who are long-listed can actually upload.
        • I haven't gotten an email either way, but I have two applications listed on interfolio for Hamilton: one says in progress, and I can edit it and upload docs to it. The other says completed, and I can't add anything to it. I drafted an email to the search chair to send Monday morning because i'm worried interfolio is sending emails to my other linked account that I can no longer access. (11/4). Update: emailed search chair and received notification of rejection (11/6)
      • Received request for additional materials 10/30 for the LGBTQ Studies Position. Interfolio first showed that my application was incomplete and needed more materials (I was able to upload) and later in the day received an email asking for more materials and saying Zoom interviews will be in early December.

  • MIDDLEBURY
    • just saw my interfolio change and it seems that review has started for middlebury - any one asked for additional materials? I imagine my application was not well recieved if the above faculty are part of the selection.
      • I was contacted for additional materials and a first round interview on 9/15. I'm very disappointed to see the department's reputation though; thanks to all who posted warnings.
      • Does your interfolio show that there are missing required items or does it just show as complete?
      • My interfolio now shows there are missing required items that weren't required when I applied, but I haven't gotten an email from them. Does that mean anything?
    • (NOTE: discussion of transphobia and racism in the department was deleted)

    • (12/12) I know of at least a couple of us who (on paper) seem like fairly good fit candidates, and no one has heard a word
    • [12/19] The past few times this department hired they conducted Zoom interviews in January and then campus visits were late February/early March. My guess is that it's just regular old university slowness and folks shouldn't lose hope as yet.
    • [1/8] I interviewed with the committee in January. They said I'd hear in the next weeks about a campus visit set to happen in February.
    • [4/10] It seems that they just went back to the long list for another round of interview/visit. Friend received zoom and campus visit request during the last two weeks. Could anyone interviewed in Jan/Feb share their experiences?

        • Can you say more? I applied for the Missouri position but didn't hear anything about a mis-spelled email address.
        • The email address on the job posting for letters of rec was incorrect. The correct email address is hudsonlavender@missouri.edu

    • Unrelated to the TT line, does anyone know how long the WGS VAP position is for, especially since they’re asking for 5(!) recommenders?
    • I was a VAP in the dept not too long ago. When I was there, VAPs had one year contracts, which could sometimes be renewed depending on departmental needs for up to three years. Then again, I did not have to provide five references.
    • ^No, but that was indeed relatively unusual, you rarely see places asking for more than 3. Also on the topic of this VAP, please read the fine print y'all. They want all materials in a single PDF file (HR was super helpful after I mistakenly uploaded them separately).
    • 3/22 any updates on the VAP position?
  • WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY
    • [4/19] Any updates on the visiting assistant professor position? I had references asked for 3/27, but haven't heard anything since.

  • General/misc questions
    • 11/17- General question from ABD first timer on the market. Do discipline insiders here know if it is common at all for PhDs in the humanities (with WGS as a PhD minor but not as your degree title) to get lecturer or assistant prof positions? I figured I'd give it a try because well, here (private R1) we have people with English, German and history PhDs with primary assignments in the WGS department...
      • Read this by Jenifer Nash and the special issue on feminist studies-Feminist Credentials: Notes on the Politics of Women's Studies Graduate Certificates
    • Forgive my ignorance here, but are all Zoom invites usually sent out on the same day? I've noted some people receiving interview emails but only a day or two after I've sent in additional materials for the same job (when the window to do so was 1-2 weeks, and I submitted later rather than sooner).
      • They often are but it is not a strict rule for committees, I would assume your materials will be reviewed because you complied with the timeline, it'd be very unfair if they only invited people who submitted early.
    • 2/28. It is not a WGS job per se, so I hesitate to post on the job listings, but if anybody specializes in black feminism or the Middle Eastern diaspora, maybe check out this position in Interdisciplinary Studies at Coastal Carolina: https://www.higheredjobs.com/faculty/details.cfm?JobCode=178706405&Title=Visiting%20Assistant%20Professor%20of%20Interdisciplinary%20Studies%20%28IDS%29
    • 3/27 Does anyone have any insights on how much of a leg up degree in hand gives you on the market vs being ABD? I've mostly given up on getting a TT job or postdoc this year and am trying to decide if to defend this year and and adjunct while applying again, or if to stay ABD for another round on the job market
      • 3/31. It is hard to answer in general. I think much of it depends on fit and a particular department's needs at a given moment. I'm ABD and have a postdoc offer and a TT offer. That said, I've taught as a visiting instructor at the institution that offered me a TT. I applied to 25+ jobs and these were the only two offers I got. Based on my experience, I'd say staying ABD and giving it another go would be better than adjuncting.
    • 4/1 Similar question to the one above that I'd love to get a general sense of people's thoughts on. Does anyone have a sense of how much better it looks/how much more prestigious and helpful for the job market it is to work as a VAP or as a teaching postdoc, rather than as a lecturer? I have a lecturer offer at my PhD-granting institution that I wouldn't have to move away for, and a VAP and teaching postdoc offer somewhere else in a less desirable location, so I'm deciding if it's worth it to move somewhere for a year for a VAP to give me a leg up on the market next year. Any thoughts?
