The J. S. Woodsworth Chair in Humanities in the Department of Global Humanities at Simon Fraser University (SFU) was established to honour the legacy and spirit of James Shaver Woodsworth, a founder of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation in 1932, forerunner of today’s New Democratic Party. The Woodsworth legacy is tied not to specific projects or themes, but rather to moral courage, social sympathies, passion for truth, and intellectual pioneering in the pursuit of social progress, education, and empowerment. This academic appointment will involve teaching, research and, particularly, community engagement in close collaboration with the Institute for the Humanities.  In this capacity, the Chair-holder will: a) be expected to include a community development dimension within the range of their activities; b) play an active role in public programming; and c) support activities that contribute to the quality of the educational environment at SFU.

The Woodsworth legacy is tied not to specific projects or themes, but rather to moral courage, social sympathies, passion for truth, and intellectual pioneering in the pursuit of social progress, education, and empowerment. This academic appointment will involve teaching, research and, particularly, community engagement in close collaboration with the Institute for the Humanities.  In this capacity, the Chair-holder will: a) be expected to include a community development dimension within the range of their activities; b) play an active role in public programming; and c) support activities that contribute to the quality of the educational environment at SFU.

The Department of Global Humanities is an interdisciplinary unit that includes specialists in Classics, Early Christianity, Byzantine and Renaissance Studies, East-Asian Religions, Chinese and European literature, and Critical Theory.  The Department is increasingly interested in non-Western traditions of thought and culture, including Indigenous traditions.

The University of Tennessee (Knoxville), College of Arts and Sciences: Lecturer in Religious Studies (Jewish Studies), due May 16, 2022

The Department of Religious Studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applications for a full-time (100%) Lecturer to begin August 1, 2022. This non-tenure-track position may be renewable, contingent upon the Department's staffing needs and support from the College, as well as evidence of excellent teaching. The position comes with full benefits, and the University of Tennessee has a well-established promotion system for non-tenure-line faculty. The teaching load is 4-4, including “Judaism”; “The American Jewish Experience,” and “Religions of the World."

Qualifications

Demonstrated excellence in teaching and a Ph.D. in Religious Studies (or a relevant field) are preferred, although ABDs will be considered. The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time of appointment and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment. The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the university.
