NOTES AND QUERIES:
NOTE: this is a repeat of a search that was cancelled due to budget problems last year. See Restoration/18th-Century 2010.
Note: This department made "Universities to Fear" for the current cycle. They had a surprise social mixer at MLA instead of campus visits.
Just to amend a portion of the above note: the social mixer was *not* a surprise (although I can see how it might have seemed that way from the "Fear" page). The SC extended the invitation for the social while scheduling the MLA interviews, or at least that was the experience that I and a few other candidates had.

Campus interview scheduled:
- 1/19: second-hand report of a campus visit scheduled here, not sure when.
- Can anyone confirm this?
- Ditto. I heard they weren't planning on doing campus visits.
- I'm none of the above people and haven't heard anything from them yet... (x2)
- Anything at all AFTER the MLA interview? Correct? (A: Correct.) If they were to schedule campus visits I suppose they would have to do that with all candidates, right? (A: There were 6-8 candidates, weren't there? That's a lot of folks to bring to campus.)
- Faculty lurker here with plenty of experience with the job market. Traditionally Berkeley does not do campus visits. They circulate dissertations and make offers after the department meets to talk about the work + interview etc. Of course, that doesn't mean they are doing that this year. But traditionally that's their practice.
- Surely by now I can stop checking this wiki and assume they've made a move. Right? (A: Presumably. In any case, you've made me feel that I'm in good company. : ) )
- 3 finalists were invited for campus visits
Rejection (after campus interview): 1/26 (x2) <--does this mean "after MLA interview"?

Pretty specific, no? Any idea whether they have someone particular in mind?
They ought to have added "ability to design application website" to the job description.
- ha! so true.

NOTES AND QUERIES:
This seems to be a replacement for a very advanced assistant who recently left.
- "Recently"? Hasn't this job been posted for the past few years?
- It doesn't seem to have been posted last year, and the person I'm thinking of left at the end of 2008-09. The "early to mid-career" phrase suggests they are looking for a replacement who is at the same career stage as the person who departed.
- They've lost two in the last five years and currently have no senior faculty in the eighteenth century. Looks like they want someone with tenure but not close to retirement. Trying to read anything more from the wording of the ad is pretty pointless.
- Word is they went Romantic. Very weird.
- Further word is that an offer is on the table.

- By the way, it's a great job in a great department with great people. I'm not an 18th century person, so I'm not in running for job, but I know the department, and it's a great place. Storrs is not a thrill, but the school is large enough that everyone has made their own community up there, and they give a lot of support to and have a lot of respect for their grad students. They've come a long way in the past ten - twenty years.

- 10 departures in the last year. They were interviewing for 4 positions this year with hopes for more next year. Some of those departures were retirements, but all? Worth checking into.
- A lot of people who move to Hawaii dislike the isolation and want to move back to the mainland. I'd wait until after a visit before deciding.
- was this a rejection AFTER submitting materials? sorry to hear it!
- Any more campus visits scheduled -- or word of an offer here??
- 2 of 3 visits are finished-- committee meets to decide next Friday, candidates will probably hear next weekend.

NOTES AND QUERIES:
- Note: a very similar search seems to have been run this past spring. See Restoration/18th-Century 2010
- I interviewed over the phone for this job last spring. Seemed like a pretty dreary department.
- Care to elaborate on why it seemed "dreary?" The people? The town? Toxic department politics?
- I didn't interview for this job, but I will venture that if one were to witness toxic departmental politics during a phone interview, that would be a pretty bad sign. I have had other interviews where the committee has seemed a bit depressed over the phone, but I withhold judgment until the campus visit stage, where you can see what the environment is like a bit more clearly.
- Any word on what's going on with this search? (A: I was told that the department would contact applicants again in January but have not heard anything yet. x2)
- Any updates on this search?
