Bowie State University (Maryland): Assistant Professor of English (Rhetoric & Composition)/Composition Director[]

Responsibilities: Teaches 12 credit hours per semester ranging from first-year composition to upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in area of specialization (potential for 3-credit release per semester); serves as Composition Coordinator (supervising ENGL 101, ENGL 102, and Technical Writing courses); develops scaffolded curriculum suitable for students at all levels of composition - including those who require remediation; coordinates ENGL 101 and ENGL 102 mentorship program; expands and extends the reach and impact of foundational programs; exhibits strong collaborative skills to interface with the Writing Center, the department’s Assessment Coordinator, and the Office of Academic Computing; advises and mentors students; conducts research; serves on departmental, college, and/or university committees; writes proposals for public and private grants; performs other related duties as assigned. This is a full-time tenure track faculty position that may require teaching in the evenings and/or weekends.
Qualifications: Ph.D. in English, Rhetoric & Composition with one or more of the following areas of specialization: rhetoric and social justice, business/entrepreneurial/grant writing, public rhetoric, digital writing and rhetoric, multimodal writing.
Minimum of two years of college/university teaching experience. Strong peer-reviewed, scholarly publication record in area of specialization or strong research potential; demonstrated ability to effectively teach undergraduate and graduate courses in area(s) of specialization; knowledge and experience in developing and evaluating undergraduate and graduate courses; demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, research/scholarship, and university/community service; excellent oral and written communication skills; digital information technology skills, including Blackboard, and online teaching experience; Preferred: Bilingualism in modern languages is a plus.

The successful candidates will join an English Department that offers a Bachelor of Science in Professional and Technical Writing, an interdisciplinary Academic Minor in Gender and Sexuality Studies, and a wide range of courses in composition, literature, ESOL, and creative writing. The English Department has recently launched a department-supervised writing center, and continues to build its First-Year Writing program and Professional and Technical Writing degree. We seek candidates who will contribute to one or more of these areas.
Tenure-track professorial positions carry an 18-hour course load per academic year. Faculty will be expected to teach writing courses, make service contributions at the departmental, college, and university levels, and pursue an active research agenda. New faculty receive 24 hours of course release to pursue their research agendas that is to be used during their first five years of employment. Faculty who take on administrative roles such as directing the writing center, the first-year writing program, or other assignments receive re-assigned time to carry out these responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS
A Ph.D.in writing studies, rhetoric and composition, or a closely related field is required. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution

The teaching commitment is comparable to a 2/2 load. For the first year, it is predicted that the newly-hired faculty will teach a regular fall session (Fall 2022) of two 3-credit courses, with spring teaching TBD. Ideally, thereafter, the successful candidate will teach one section of either of the program’s core 3-credit courses, ENGRC 3350: Organizational Communications for Engineers or ENGRC 3500: Engineering Communications. In addition, this addition to the Engineering Communications Program will join existing and/or create new teaching partnerships with faculty from a range of courses in the various engineering disciplines. Through these teaching partnerships, ECP staff help interested engineering faculty to embed written, oral, visual, and electronic communications into their courses and assist in instruction, e.g., designing assignments and responding to and assessing student work. An interest in communications labs is a plus. There is an expectation that this person will also contribute to developing and enhancing the pedagogical innovations and visibility of ECP. Technical Writing. Specialization in rhetoric and technical writing or professional communication. The candidate will teach Technical Writing in our existing program and develop further specialized courses for undergraduates in all areas of technical communication. Technical Writing is an upper division course focuses on writing and data science that draws students from Applied Math, the Business School, Computer Science, Neurobiology, and the Quantitative Theory and Methods Department (QTM).
The Writing Program at Emory offers a new minor in Rhetoric, Writing, and Information Design (RWID) and has an integrated English Language Learners (ELL) program. We also support first-year writing and various WAC/WID initiatives in the College of Arts and Sciences, including a long-standing Writing Center. Successful applicants will join a collegial group of five lecture-track faculty, four administrative staffers, and six postdoctoral fellows already working in the Writing Program.
Lecture-track appointments at Emory are renewable contracts for three, five, or seven years depending on rank. Appointments have career trajectories with opportunities for promotion from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer to Professor of Pedagogy. Our faculty positions are housed in the English Department. The program also reports to the Office of Undergraduate Education, as we foster faculty development, support the three-course College Continuing Writing Requirement, and support students across the College and beyond. The normal teaching load for faculty in the lecture-track at Emory is 3/2, normally including some first-year writing instruction. This hire will also have the opportunity to design and teach courses of interest which serve the minor in RWID.
Lecture-track faculty have access to research funding through the College and the Writing Program. A reduction of teaching load is negotiable for administrative responsibilities.
