College of Staten Island CUNY: Lecturer – Writing Studies (Two positions)[]

The English Department at the College of Staten Island of the City University of New York is pleased to invite applications for two full-time Lecturer positions in Writing Studies.

The College of Staten Island is a federally-designated Hispanic-serving institution located in one of the most culturally, racially, ethnically, linguistically, and economically diverse cities in the nation. Situated on the 204 acre park-like Willowbrook campus (with a growing satellite campus in the St. George neighborhood), and serving over 10,000 students, CSI is the only public institution of higher education in the Borough, and a senior campus of The City University of New York. As such, the College is dedicated to providing transformational learning experiences and supporting students to fulfill their creative and educational aspirations.

We seek candidates who are prepared and excited to work in a busy, vibrant, and collegial writing program, housed within a supportive English Department. We are eager to welcome colleagues who promote writing as an equitable, ethical, rhetorical subject and practice and who support student agency and literacies through active, student-centered pedagogies. We strongly encourage applications from individuals who are under-represented in the profession across color, creed, race, class, ethnic, national origin, physical ability, and gender and sexual identity.

CSI’s Writing Program offers a two-course first-year writing sequence, including ESL and co-requisite options, as well as developmental, academic ESL courses. We also offer a concentration in writing within the English Major. Lecturer faculty teach an annual workload of 24 units, which is typically three first-year writing courses per semester and/or other GE or writing-studies related classes as needed. Lecturer faculty also contribute to the Writing Program through programmatic service. This includes working with colleagues and the Writing Program director on curriculum and resource design, program assessment, and professional development programming, as well as serving on the Writing Program (advisory) Committee. Additionally, successful candidates may become involved in future and emerging projects, including, potentially, developing courses in writing at the sophomore level and beyond, and contributing to WAC/WID and diversity initiatives across the campus. As such, the successful candidate will have significant background and investment in the theory, research, and scholarship that supports the teaching of writing and the work of Writing Programs.

Lecturer faculty participate as full members of the English department, the College, and the University and may serve in shared governance and other institutional roles. As highly qualified, full-time teaching faculty, lecturers in the CUNY system are eligible for a contractually-equivalent form of tenure, called a certificate of continuous employment, which is achieved based on teaching and service record and may be pursued after 5 years of service in the rank.

Cornell University (Ithaca, NY): Engineering Communications Program Lecturer / Senior Lecturer Position in the College of Engineering (NTT)[]

Apply on Academic Jobs Online: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/21038

REVIEW OF MATERIALS: March 1, 2022

APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 15, 2022

The Engineering Communications Program (ECP), in the College of Engineering at Cornell University, located in Ithaca, NY, USA, invites applications for a full-time Lecturer or Senior Lecturer position. This non-tenure track position, teaching engineering communications, is a nine-month position, appointed three to five years, with possible renewal. This is not a remote or online position.

The teaching commitment is comparable to a 2/2 load. For the first year, it is predicted that the newly-hired faculty will teach a regular fall session (Fall 2022) of two 3-credit courses, with spring teaching TBD. Ideally, thereafter, the successful candidate will teach one section of either of the program’s core 3-credit courses, ENGRC 3350: Organizational Communications for Engineers or ENGRC 3500: Engineering Communications. In addition, this addition to the Engineering Communications Program will join existing and/or create new teaching partnerships with faculty from a range of courses in the various engineering disciplines. Through these teaching partnerships, ECP staff help interested engineering faculty to embed written, oral, visual, and electronic communications into their courses and assist in instruction, e.g., designing assignments and responding to and assessing student work. Therefore, our preferred candidate will be interested in and excited to work across disciplines in the College of Engineering to form and grow these partnerships. An interest in communications labs is a plus. There is an expectation that this person will also contribute to developing and enhancing the pedagogical innovations and visibility of ECP. This may happen in a variety of ways, including but not limited to the following: professional presentations via relevant conferences or other venues, publishing peer-reviewed articles, or conducting workshops for industry representatives or interested faculty and students at the College or University levels. Finally, there is an added expectation of light administrative duties.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference given to candidates that have a Ph.D. (preferred) or Master’s degree (the minimal requirement) in one of these areas:

  • Technical Communication
  • Professional Communication
  • Science Communication
  • Applied Linguistics with a specialization in Professional and Academic Discourse
  • Related degree with a focus on communication with competencies in teaching oral presentations and multi-modal artifacts

Additional Desired Qualifications: Experience teaching engineering communications at the college level is important. Additional preferred areas of expertise are Teaching of English as a Second Language (TESL), English for Specific Purposes (ESP), English for Academic Purposes (EAP), Communication Across the Curriculum (CAC or CXC), Communication in the Disciplines (CID), Genre Studies, and Multi-modal Communication. Applicants with interdisciplinary teaching experience (especially in engineering) and experience identifying and serving the instructional needs of faculty in various technical fields are highly desirable.

The position and program are a good fit for teacher-scholars interested in cross-disciplinary instruction in engineering communications. ECP encourages teacher-research in this area, particularly as it contributes to the program and enhances communication instruction across engineering disciplines. Funds are available to support the presentation and/or publication of such teacher-research.

College of Engineering and Cornell University Information The College of Engineering faculty at Cornell embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will foster a climate that attracts students of all races, nationalities, and genders. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented groups in engineering to apply. Diversity and Inclusion are a part of Cornell University’s heritage. We are a recognized employer and educator valuing AA/EEO, protected veterans and individuals with disabilities. We also recognize a lawful preference in employment practices for Native Americans living on or near Indian reservations. Cornell University is an innovative Ivy League university and a great place to work. Our inclusive community of scholars, students, and staff impart an uncommon sense of larger purpose, and contribute creative ideas to further the university's mission of teaching, discovery, and engagement.

Application Materials:

  • a cover letter addressed to the ECP Search Committee
  • a curriculum vitae
  • a teaching statement
  • the name and contact information for at least three references.

Additional materials will be requested from candidates that move to our second round of consideration, and those will be requested directly from the candidate. Review of materials begins on March 1, 2022. All applications received by March 15, 2022 will receive full consideration this academic year. Applications will be evaluated on an ongoing basis until the position is filled.

Effective January 1, 2022, all new Cornell hires, regardless of role and work location, must be fully vaccinated and present proof of an FDA- or WHO- authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccination or have a university-approved disability/medical or religious exemption. Failure to demonstrate compliance with this requirement prior to the first day of work will result in the delay of employment with Cornell and may result in the offer of employment being rescinded.

Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply.
