  • University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa (Was contacted for a screening interview at SSWR, 12/19/2019) X3 <== Anyone heard back from them for a campus interview?  (as of 1/25) <== I was told they were putting names forward on Friday (1/24) and would be likely extending offers for campus visits the following week.(1/26)  <--Nothing yet on my end as of 1/30/20. Visit/Offers Discussion[]

  • Has anyone received rejection phone calls from schools where they interviewed/had campus visits?
  • Anybody who were on the job market last year? Looks like going slowly this year, but not sure if it is only my case. u r not alone (X5)
    • What is different this year?--> I think the market is tighter this year
    • I think people are posting less on wiki this year (x3)
    • I don't know that I would conclude that the market is tighter, but it does seem that more and more schools have explicit searches for candidates who specialize in a particular area. Last year it seemed that there were many more general searches. The market differs year to year, but within the Social Work field, there seems to be plenty of positions given so many school are growing and adding more programs and positions. 
    • This year does seem rather bizarre. I do think fewer people are updating the site which is unfortunate. It also seems as if schools have some pretty far out expectations of candidates. (<---------x1,001)
    • I know for sure that a couple of searches have been cancelled, which sometimes happens. It also seems like more committees than usual have gone M.I.A. #Ghosted haha <----Which schools have cancelled their searches??? Inquisitive minds want to know! :)
      • I have heard about University of Vermont and LaSalle University (PA) for certain. I am pretty sure some other searches have ended prematurely as well, but I haven't heard specific names. 
        • Ghosted (<--------- also 1,000)  I expected better than this from social work schools.  For screening interviews, this isn't ideal (although I get it), but ghosting people who spent days on campus seems to be very poor form.  (*A note to our future administrative selves).
          • In my experience, it seems that the significant hang-ups tend to happen once the decision has left the committee's hands. I actually needed to turn down a fantastic offer last year because I had already signed a short-term contract with another school, after waiting over a month after the final campus visit. I get that there are a lot of hoops, hurdles, and signatures that drag out the process. I have been very appreciative of the schools that have reached out to me to apologize for the delays and communicate that I am still being considered, though. I think the nature of academia is much like hurding cats, regardless of the field/department. Also, search-committee work is additional work on top of work that faculty actually get paid to do. Moral of the story, delays happen; nonetheless, a courtesy check-in from the school/department clearly speaks volumes. 
            • << "I have been very appreciative of the schools that have reached out to me to apologize for the delays and communicate that I am still being considered" says it all.  This is exactly what is needed.  Still, I like your comparison to hurding cats and point that search committee work is service.  Also, so sorry about the late offer.  That stinks.  I hope everything ended up working out for the best.
          • Totally agreed!!!  I had 4 campus interviews, and about 1.5 weeks after, my references were contacted.  However, I had to wait for additional 2.5 more weeks until I got contacted and got a soft offer--I hoped the school has more independence so that they can be more active and assertive in securing good ones. Their coutesy check-in makes things better for both parties.  And I totally agree that this year's market got delayed.  
            • Yes to courtesy check-ins.  They make a world of difference.  I am more likely to accept a position that involves considerate and fairly regular communication.  This speaks volumes about priorities and likely workplace culture.
              • For sure! It suggests that the committee is already invested in you as a candidate and treating you as they would like to be treated.  
  • A number of schools have implemented hiring freezes due to budget limitations caused by COVID19. Will this impact the offers already signed and accepted? Any thoughts?
    • 4/15: I officially accepted an offer about 3 weeks ago and I am still waiting on the contract, MAKING ME NERVOUS!!! I sure hope not. I think private schools are going to be the ones most impacted. -- UPDATE: I received my contract! Good luck to everyone else! > Congrats! I am so happy for you :)  I have offically accepted the offer today. It took a really long time to reach an agreement due to the current health and economic conditions; I am grateful that my offer has been honored while the university level hiring freeze was announced. 
    • I think it depends on how far the program had gotten into the process. If you are still waiting for the contract, you are in a precarious position. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. If you have already signed a contract you are in a better position. With the signed contract, I would look into what outs the school has regarding rescission. Unfortunately, even with a signed contract, nothing is guaranteed; especially given a pandemic. I know that some schools were trying to move quickly in order to get in under the deadline. From my understanding, states have implemented hiring freezes, so I am not sure how much colleges or universities how control over these matters. My apologies for not having something more pleasant to say. Also, my apologies to everyone that is currently in this awful place of not knowing if you have a position or not.   
    • 4/24: I officially accepted an offer in NYC around mid Feb, turning down another interview in the process. There were bureaucratic delays, a death in an administrator's family, and then covid19 hit. Dean assured me that I would still be hired. Now their communication has been ebbing and the dean says that she is waiting for "hiring guidance". Very upsetting. Was coming here looking to see if the other school had hired someone or if it was worthwhile to reach out!

Additional Comments[]

  • With schools shutting down to prevent the spread of COVID19, virtual campus visits seem to be the next likely step? Has anyone been offered a virtual visit? Previously had a virtual visit? If so, got any advice? (3/10/20)                       
    • I was asked if I felt comfortable being present but offered a virtual visit if I did not by one school.  I appreciate this but do feel comfortable there, so I will attend in person.  Yet I will likely cancel another visit in a highly impacted area if a virtual option is not offered.  Classes will resume as usual at that school following spring break, however they expressed concerns about me not spreading COVID19 to them if I had it, but similar consideration for the health of candidates appears to be lacking, which is informing my decision to cancel if an alternative is not offered soon.
    • My remaining 3 visits went online.  I believe the best formats are those which allow both powerpoint slides to be shared alongside video footage of the presenter (to demonstrate we know the material, as it could be assumed we are reading from notes without video).  The arrangement that has stood out the most involved an offer to send me lunch the day of the job talk.  That school already has the advantage, but this scored even more points. ----> Wow! That is so nice of them to order lunch. I've had 2 visits go online that I completed this week-- they have been quite challenging (staring at a computer screen for 8 hours). I have two more virtual interviews over the next 2 weeks. One of my virtual visits does not allow any breaks for a 3 hour period! I am definitely taking this into consideration...Quite inconsiderate!! Best of luck to everyone going online!! Definitely take some outside walks to get fresh air when you can :) 
    • I kind of wish my visit went online. I have one scheduled, but they are hoping to do a campus visit in May. I am going to create an online class for the students in the meantime though.  I obviously would prefer an in person campus visit, but the delay to May kind of stresses me out. ---4/4 - my visit has been moved to virtual, will be held in early may, with the teaching demo next week!
  • Just last week, I got an email from one of the schools where I had a campus interview. They were originally planning to hire 2 TT positions, but informed me that they cancelled all hiring due to the pandemic.

Minimum Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be interested in teaching across the curriculum at the BSW and MSW levels. This is a nine-month tenure-track position. This position is primarily responsible for teaching practice courses. The Social Work Department at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Social Work. The duties involve teaching course work at both the BSW and MSW levels, research/scholarship, and service to the department, college and university. Ability to teach in a variety of curricular areas is important, particularly social work practice. 

The mission of the Social Work Department is to promote the well-being of
people and society and advance social and economic justice. SIUE’s programs
are noted in the region for their unique use of a simulated lab clinical experience. Students participate in a mock clinical setting with hired actors that simulate actual experiences in the field, and complete their degree after extensive experience in
an actual social work setting. For those with a bachelor’s degree, SIUE also offers an advanced standing program that allows the opportunity to gain a master’s in only one calendar year.

The School of Social Work. Dr. Philip McCallion, an international expert in aging, dementia and intellectual disabilities, joined Temple in 2017. Under his direction, SSW’s 22 faculty serve 800 students in CSWE-accredited BSW and MSW programs. The BSW program focuses on generalist practice and the MSW program requires advanced-year students to concentrate in a practice method and specialize in a field of practice. These programs are fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education through 2023. SSW plans to launch a doctoral program.

There is strong commitment to supporting students already in the workforce, building interdisciplinary education and expanding educational opportunities. The School is in its 3rd year of delivering a fully online MSW program and is proposing an online BSW program for persons with Associate Degrees. Through a partnership with other disciplines within the College, MSW students can earn a concurrent MPH or JD. A strong Department of Field Education assists about 400 students annually with field placements. SSW contributes significantly to the College’s Office of Clinical Practice and Field Education, which makes 3,500 placements annually and maintains relationships with 3,000 community agencies. The fellowship provides an opportunity to join an existing research team conducting basic and intervention research related to the use of technology in the behavioral sciences and connections to STEM programs. The goal of this work is to engage social work practitioners in the development, building, and implementation of technology in practice that addresses the Social Work Grand Challenge of harnessing technology for good. The technology work is aimed at addressing the needs of underserved populations and will focus on developing technology-based supports that will enhance health protective factors, linkage to STEM, and use of supportive tech-based behavioral/ mental health interventions. The fellow will be provided time, space, and mentoring to develop scholarship in this area.
The postdoctoral fellow will work primarily with Dr(s). Susan Elswick and Gregory Washington to analyze data from existing research projects, collaborate on empirical papers to submit to leading journals, and take an active role in ongoing interdisciplinary research, development, testing, and implementation of new behavioral health technologies. The technology development and research is based on a number of funded projects within the School of Social Work (work in trauma informed practices, education based supports, and behavioral health interventions). The postdoctoral fellow’s specific project-related responsibilities will include supervision of the technology development and implementation, support the community-based projects and data collection, and assisting with the development and/or application of data review and analysis.

A doctoral degree in Social Work, Human Development, Psychology, Early Education, or a related field is required.

Preferred candidates will have:
*Previous experience with community-based interventions, work with interdisciplinary teams, and work/research with informatics or technology within the field of social sciences
*Strong organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills, including effective oral/written communication

                                        • Answer: I asked about the timeline and the chair of the search committee indicated that their intent was to identify their top choices and bring them directly for campus visits. From what she said, they weren't intending to do first-round interviews for this hire. Whether they stayed the course on that, I don't know. The interview at CSWE felt more like a first-round interview than informational, so I'm not sure.
