Page for Academic Positions in Social Work that begin in 2023.

New 6/22/23: Next year's page: Social Work 2023-2024

Last year's page: Social Work 2021-2022

Let's do this! Try to stick to a few guidelines when posting to keep things consistent:[]

  • Post information about the position (or positions) including rank, source of information, and desired specialties.
  • Update when you know if a school has announced or cancelled a search, done preliminary interviews, a invited candidates out for job talks, or made offers, even if this information is anecdotal (but please note that it's anecdotal if it is)!
  • Add date of posting to information whenever possible.
  • Please Use === Heading 3 === when adding names of schools to this page.

A couple of features of this page, based on additional posts from past years:

  • There are two general sections:
  • Discussion: Post other job search related information here. In the past, topics have included:
  • Tally of number of people checking this page
  • Information about salaries offered relative to cost of living.
  • Information about the number of places people have applied, number of initial interviews received, number of campus visits/job talks, and number of offers.
  • Info on regular teaching load for each institution (e,g., 3 courses/semester is a 3-3 teaching load)
  • Please feel free to add topics here!
  • List of Schools: Post information about positions, here: FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS ACADEMIC, PLEASE DATE YOUR POSTS!

I had a bad experience when I visited UTA, and I already had an inkling that the culture at the school might be harsh. If anyone is a person of color and considering UTA, here are a few links you should click on, which details the experience of a former Black female faculty member.

Interview/General questions[]

  • Just an update for anyone interested, the search at UMich, Dearborn Department of Health and Human Services -- Tenure-track Assistant Professor is still open as of 3/23/23.
  • Has anyone heard from James Madison University? I just received an email from them yesterday (2/10) regarding a screening interview
  • FYI - I heard from a colleague that CSU will be making decisions about first round interviews soon, and plan to conduct them in December (11/16) Did they say anything about doing a second round of screening interviews or nah? (12/17)
  • Did anyone else receive an email from UW-Madison asking for letters of reference to complete their application? (submitted 9/19; received request 9/28) yes, I received the same and looked at last year’s wiki page to see they seem to ask this of everyone (posted 9/28) (x2)
  • Does the number of jobs posted already this year feel sparse to anyone else? I was expecting more of a "post"-covid boost in postings. - Yes, I have the same feeling. There are many, but not like the ones that I am targeting. Waiting for more opportunities. - It seemed like a lot came out early and now we're in a bit of a slump. I did start reaching out to universities I'm interested in just to ask if they are hiring this year, and several said yes, they just hadn't posted yet. I'm hoping that means there's another big surge in postings in October. -- Are you open to sharing what those schools/universities are? (9/29) -- Sure, though the specifics may not be particularly helpful. One was Michigan, which has since posted. The other is Loyola in Chicago and they said they will be posting. Those are the only two I reached out to. Perhaps if there's schools you're hoping are hiring, you could send a casual email inquiry to the Dean/Chair? (9/30)
  • Has anyone heard from Salem State? I sent in my app a few weeks ago and saw that they reposted the ad, haven't heard anything; I'm assuming I'll hear nothing from them but wanted to check! (no date). Salem State is scheduling 1st round remote interviews for early November (10/25). Campus visit scheduled mid-December (12/1).
  • Has anyone heard from Michigan State University? Thanks (10/12) Any word? (11/22) I have not heard anything either (11/29); me either (12/2). Received email saying first round interviews will be early January (12/6). <-- can you clarify? Was this email saying you were given an interview? I got an email (on 12/4) saying that they would reach out with decisions about next steps by Jan 1, 2023. Apologies for confusion, it was not an invite, just a generic update email that I assume went to all applicants (12/7) .
  • To the person who got the interview with Marist College, when did you apply? Thank you! (10/12) Sorry, I'm just seeing this! I applied on 10/2. (10/26)
  • To the person who received a rejection email from Ohio State University, was that after a screening interview or just a submitted application? (10/17) Submitted application (10/17) I received a rejection email on the same day (10/14) after a screening interview. (10/17)
    • Has anyone received news from their campus visit? (12/09) - I hv't heard back [12/10] - May I ask when was your campus visit? (12/09) - mine was in Nov. (12/10]
    • Anyone else out here who did not get a campus visit offer for OSU but also didn't get a rejection? My guess is they're waiting to see if they fill their 4 positions from this first round of visits and offers, but wondering: does anyone have more info/insight into what their process is? (12/20) - All positions filled and search closed as of 12/22. (notified 12/22)
  • Has anyone heard anything from the University of Montana? (10/30)
  • has anyone heard from the University of Utah or Seattle University after screening interviews yet? (11/1) The University of Utah made it sound like next steps would not be shared until after CSWE. Seattle University said they hoped to get next steps out by this week. That's a tight timeline, so we'll see. (11/1). - heard from both schools for campus visits today (11/4) -Would you mind sharing which rank you are? (11/5) For Asst. Professor position (11/6)
  • Anyone get any word or updates from Simmons? (11/2) - I have not heard from them since submission. (11/2) Also have not heard yet; can't even log in to the account I made to check on the status of the application (11/3). Got word this week about interviews starting first full week of December (12/1). Campus visits (virtual) early to mid-January (12/16)
  • Has anyone heard anything from the University at Albany? (11/2) - I haven't (11/2 x2). I heard they won't reach out for first round interviews until mid-November (11//5). Interviews starting week of 11/28 (11/23). I heard Albany has a $15 million deficit, and the social work department has cycled through 4 deans in the last decade. The last one stepped down for ‘personal reasons.’ Might be good to keep that in mind (11/28). Campus visits being scheduled for mid-January (12/16). Just learned that the office of the Associate Dean for Research was eliminated at the school in 2021. Doesn’t bode well for support of faculty research (2/16). The School of Social Welfare is under consideration to be merged with the School of Public Health, and the "School" will become a "Department." The Dean will become "Director," and all current "Directors" will become "Chairs." This is due to declining enrollment of students, declining rate of publications and grant activities among faculty, along with on-going consolidation efforts at UAlbany. Not sure what this means for incoming tenure-track faculty (5/6}.
  • To the person who got rejected from KU, did you receive that after the first round interview? Sorry for asking about this. I am curious because I have never heard back from them (no interview no rejection). Thanks. (11/3) No worries, that is what this page is for! I did not make it to interviews. I submitted my application 10/05 and got the rejection email (no interview) on 11/02 (11/4) - Sorry to hear that. Better opportunities are there waiting for you. Best luck! (11/4)
  • A contact of mine at UT-Austin shared that they are likely trying to hire someone with a focus on autism in adulthood, and that even though the posting was geared toward both aging and disability, that they would be prioritizing disability scholars (11/17). Has anyone heard from UT-Austin? (12/4) Yes, they sent an email on 12/14 stating that they will be sending out pre-screening interview schedules soon (12/15). has anyone heard any updates from UT-Autstin? (02/13)
  • Has anyone heard from University of Michigan? I applied a while back and know that they are a bit slower in their process but also imagine they would have done screeners by now. (11/21). They are only just starting screeners now scheduling across the next week or so (11/23) Has anyone heard from Michigan following screening interviews? (12/14)
  • Has anyone heard from Loyola University after the screening interviews? (11/21) I haven't heard back either. They mentioned that they will send out campus invites this week. Hopefully we hear back either today or tomorrow (11/22) Haven’t heard either. Did you get the sense we’d hear either way? (11/22) No, not really. Just that they hoped to schedule visits soon, but not that they'd tell us yes or no if we were moved forward. Anyone else have other thoughts? (11/28) I got the sense we would hear either way - they said “you will be hearing from us” - but it looks like at least one campus invite already went out (12/3) any offers made or positions accepted? (2/8)
  • For the person who heard about the NYU campus visit - is this for the assistant or associate position? Thanks! (11/22) It's for asst. professor position (11/22)
  • Has anyone heard from Indiana University after the screening interviews? (11/23) No, had virtual interview 11/16 and have not heard. They told me late November, early December for decisions on campus visits (11/28). Yes, campus visit early December and they are still screening people too (12/2). Can the person who posted on 12/2 clarify if there have been offers for campus visits given at IU or they are just saying they will make offers in early December? Sorry just looking to clarify if others got campus visits! (12/5). Yes there have been invitations to campus, scheduled for early to mid December. (12/5).
  • For the person who has the screening interview with Colorado State University, did the chair reach out to you before applying? Also when did you apply? (11/29) I did not hear from the chair before applying, I applied 10/18 and heard about a screening interview 11/21 (12/2) Has anyone heard about a campus visit yet or know when they might make their decision? (12/14) They said they will give an update after the New Year. (12/15) Thanks!!
  • Has anyone heard from Marist College after the screening interviews? (11/29)
  • Has anyone heard back or received a campus visit for University of Pittsburgh after screening interviews? (12/03) As per the dean, they plan to hire one person (12/8).
    • Anyone heard back after campus visit? (12/19)
  • Has anyone heard back from the University of Hawaii yet? (12/06)
  • I just got an email from University of Nevada - Reno asking if I am still interested in the Asst. Professor position that said they will begin reviewing applications in January. I see that someone had a screening interview back in Oct/Nov. Does anyone have insight into this? (12/12) --> I know they offered someone a position that is starting in January (likely when fall screening happened). So I'd take this as good news that they're hiring for another position to start next AY and are probably starting a fresh round of hiring. (12/13)
  • Those of you out there without a job offer yet: how are you feeling? Any word on places likely to post new openings in the comings months? How are you thinking through your options: postdocs, alt-ac jobs, teaching positions, staying enrolled as a student another year, etc.?
    • So many schools are still in the process of working through next steps (campus visits, reference checks, waiting for the holidays to be over and the HR person to return from vacation to be able to move forward). My take was a number of schools posted early and gave a false sense of movinng quickly when in fact January-February may be the busier months for offers and decisions. I feel confident I will secure a position in the next 1-2 months based on how many of the schools I interviewed with scheduling campus visits after New Years (12/20)
    • That's helpful perspective, thanks for that. I guess our experiences depend a lot on where we applied and what their timelines were. All of my schools did campus visits in Nov/Dec, so I'm ending this year with a lack of possibility beyond new positions that recently posted or will post in Jan/Feb (12/20)
    • Honestly? Super depressed. I've had a single interview that went nowhere so I'm pretty much just applying to as many schools as I can and hoping one sticks. What's worse is that I had a few schools reach out to me to apply, which I did, and then they didn't reach out to interview me. I'll talk to my advisor after the new year and hopefully will get some insight into my predicament. (12/21)
    • Hang in there and keep applying! I feel that this process is overwhelming in a lot of ways and it can feel stifling. I hope that your chair can be supportive in strategizing next steps for you so that you can approach starting in January feels like it is propelling you forward. This s a tough job market this year and it has been easy for us to feel depleted. I imagine this Wiki will start to take on more of a tone of support and bouncing ideas of each other as it has in the past - we surely need it! Stay strong and consider January a reset for more applications and considering your options. (12/23)
  • Has anyone heard from The University of Kansas (KUSSW) regarding a job offer? My understanding was they had their last campus visit the week of 12/12. (12/27)
  • Wondering if anyone has heard from Rutgers or Hunter College for screening interviews yet? (1/6). I have not heard anything from Hunter (and did not apply to Rutgers). (1/6) I found out through the faculty I know that Hunter will have Zoom interviews in late January and job talks beginning in February. (1/9) Haven't heard anything from Rutgers (2/01). Its early February- any update on Hunter or Rutgers (2/07)? I've heard nothing from Hunter since submitting application materials in early December. In fact, most of the places I've applied have been radio silent for months, despite no mentions on here that they've had screening interviews or campus visits. (2/09) Heard from a colleague at Hunter that they received ~90 applications and have held 4-5 zoom interviews to date. It was unclear whether they had a finalist list or if all applications had been reviewed. Person also expressed disappointment at how slow the process has been. (2/17)
  • Wondering if anyone has heard from Columbia University? (1/16) Haven't heard anything from Columbia University (2/01)
  • (1/25) I have a campus interview at a large R01. I received the schedule, and it involves 3-4 hours of zoom interviews with faculty members (it seems like I will be sitting in a room taking these calls). Is this normal? (1/31) I had a campus visit recently that did just this for approximately 2 hours to accommodate faculty that remain remote and those unavailable in general for the day of my visit. It was curious but worked out rather nicely.
  • Anyone heard from Colorado State University? (2/11) I was told early January that I was put on hold, never heard from them again since then (2/13) They said the search was put on hold or that your application specifically was? How odd (2/13) My application specifically. It sounded like a waitlist. (2/14)
  • How long after campus visit should you check in with the search committee? I had a visit in late February. The faculty mentioned that I would hear back soon, in 1-2 weeks, but it's been about a month and I haven't heard anything, not even a rejection letter. (3/27)
