Academic Jobs Wiki

Page for Academic Positions in Social Work that begin in 2025.

Next year's page: Social Work 2025-2026

Last year's page: Social Work 2023-2024

Let's do this! Try to stick to a few guidelines when posting to keep things consistent:[]

  • Post information about the position (or positions) including rank, source of information, and desired specialties.
  • Update when you know if a school has announced or cancelled a search, done preliminary interviews, a invited candidates out for job talks, or made offers, even if this information is anecdotal (but please note that it's anecdotal if it is)!
  • Add date of posting to information whenever possible.
  • Please Use === Heading 3 === when adding names of schools to this page.

A couple of features of this page, based on additional posts from past years:

  • There are two general sections:
  • Discussion: Post other job search related information here. In the past, topics have included:
  • Tally of number of people checking this page
  • Information about salaries offered relative to cost of living.
  • Information about the number of places people have applied, number of initial interviews received, number of campus visits/job talks, and number of offers.
  • Info on regular teaching load for each institution (e,g., 3 courses/semester is a 3-3 teaching load)
  • Please feel free to add topics here Hi everyone, I have a campus visit coming up for a R2 school. Can anyone demystify the process. What was it like for you to go on a campus visit? What kind of questions can I expect to answer from the Dean, provost, president and search committee. Thanks so much!
  • List of Schools: Post information about positions, here: FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS ACADEMIC, PLEASE DATE YOUR POSTS!

Status Updates/General Discussion[]

Has anyone heard of an update from San José State University? (6/2/2025)

Is anyone impacted by a hiring freeze? What insititutions are currently on a hiring freeze? (4/23/25)

Has anyone heard anything from CSU Monterey Bay, San Jose State University, or Humboldt University? (2/26/25)

- CSU Monterey Bay is currently doing campus visits (3/1)

For those that have received offers and negotiated better offers, would you be willing to share how you went about that? For example, can you share your template wording (with private info redacted of course). (2/24/25)

  • On negotiation, I want to note that because the dean was interested in equity across the hiring cohort, our bargaining seems to have helped each other! So bargain hard for yourself *and* for others.
  • I negotiated over email and essentially sent line-by-line responses to the offer in bullet points. So I had an introductory paragraph and then line-by-line requests. I sent everything I wanted at once, though some people recommend going back and forth with one thing at a time (like, first salary, then moving, then course buyouts). Example of what I did outlined below:
    • " Dear Dean ___, I hope this email finds you well. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to join _____ as an Assistant Professor. It is an honor to be considered for this position, and I am excited about the potential to contribute to the school’s impactful work and dynamic academic community. After careful review of the offer, I am writing to discuss some adjustments that would help me make the transition seamlessly into this role and to have an impactful start. Please find my responses to your offer below with justifications, when relevant.
      1. Conference Travel Funds
        • I am very thankful for the $2,000 annual allocation for conference travel. To ensure I can engage widely with peers and present research at key conferences due to the interdisciplinary nature of my research, I kindly request increasing this to $3,600 annually. I typically attend both ____ and ____ conferences annually and this increase would allow me to continue to attend both and engage with diverse audiences.
      2. Research Funds......... " (3/1/25)

I got a few emails today about searches being closed without filling the positions. Do we think this is because of the current political situation, or am I being paranoid and it's just a coincidence? (2/21/25)

  • Oh my, I'm sorry to hear that! I have not received any emails like that. Hopefully it does not become a trend. (2/24/25)
  • I just had this happen to me today. Two weeks ago I was essentially told to expect a formal offer soon, and then today was notified the school has decided not to hire and is closing the search. Devastated. (3/20/25).
    • I just want to say that I am so incredibly sorry to the poster above. The job market is devasting enough without this horrifying political situation on top of it. I am so, so sad to hear you did not receive an offer you were told to expect. This is not fair and you deserved better. Sending a hug through the waves of the internet. (3/28/25)

Do we need to worry about offers being rescinded? I accepted a verbal offer a couple weeks ago and the wait for the written offer letter is stressing me out (2/16/25)

  • Just wanted to validate this fear and send good luck! I think we are better off in social work than some fields... I know at least one person in public health who had an offer "put on hold". I had the same fear as you and had also given a verbal acceptance and then waited for several weeks for official paperwork to come in and was getting so nervous with the news. My paperwork came in last week, and I hope you have the same experience! Hang in there. It is a wild time to be in this position. (2/17/25)
  • Along the same line of fear, does anyone have more knowledge or insight (even though I know it is hard to predict) on how everything that is going is going to affect not only this year but next year's market? I am in a weird situation where I was hoping to do a soft launch this year on the job market and then a full search next year but it seems this may be my best shot? Would love to hear what others have heard from faculty or mentors (2/19/25)

General question, how long after a screening interview is it appropriate to follow-up about the status of your application? Also, is it weird that there has been a lot of "ghosting" going on (first time on job market)? (2/12/25)

  • I typically gave folks about 3 weeks before following up, unless they gave me a specific date, like "We will let everyone know by November 1", then I checked in after that if I haven't heard anything. I was on the job market two years in a row and both years, I was ghosted by every single place I did a screener at except the ones who invited me to a campus visit. So, unfortunately, I think this is terribly common. Last year I felt like I was being annoying asking for an update so I didn't send any follow-up questions, but this year I got tired of the game and just sent polite check-in emails. Disappointed to report that most still just ghosted me or gave vague responses. This is a huge annoyance of mine now and I have sworn I will be better when I am on search committees in the future... (2/17/25)

Postdoc question. Are people just posting any postdoc information? The Umich prez postdoc was posted. That's a university wide postdoc not a sw specific postdoc, and it's also offered through the UC system. I feel like that should go on a separate location, not lumped in with general TT positions. There are *many* postdocs out there that sw folks could apply to and it seems like a good idea to have these posted somewhere, but lumped in here makes it hard on the listing to see if things are postdocs or not. Thoughts on starting a new section? (02/05/25)

As we are in the midst of the negotiations phase for this job cycle, I just wanted to ask: Has anyone else felt like their negotiations have been pretty luke warm this year? It seems like such a seller's market with so few jobs that I personally have felt like there's been virtually no give on even pretty reasonable requests. Just wondering if others feel this way and what folks are doing to get around it if so. (1/30/25)

  • I am kind of amazed at how low most of the salary offers are, although the up-front perks seem good. I'm also disappointed more people aren't sharing details of theirs offers, but grateful to the ones who are! (1/31/25)
  • It's my first time on the job market so I'm curious to hear from others perspective. Is this considered a sellers market? Would you say there are generally more jobs available? (2/3/25).
  • It looks like there are roughly around the same number of SW TT jobs as last year, maybe a few more. But the last two years, there have been fewer jobs than normal in this field. Using this wiki page as reference, there were 63 in 2022, 91 in 2021, 70 in 2020. There were 36 on this page last year, and 46 on here this year as of today. Obviously these numbers on this page aren't perfect or exact. But compared to a market with 70 or 100 jobs, definitely feels like a seller's market where things are scarce and employers can be less generous. (2/4/25).

ECU has reposted their position and is hiring another Assistant Professor. (1/16/15)

Many folks are in the stage of negotiation. I'd love to hear some of the things you all have negotiated for, either this year or in the past. Or things you wish you would have negotiated for! (1/13/25)

  • Definitely course releases to protect your research time if at an R1 or R2
  • Don't take for granted things like technology or software access
    • Can someone give examples of things besides software that fall under technology that could be negotiated? I assume a laptop for example, monitors? anything else? (2/19)
  • Student support (if part of your start up fund then get that start up fund money higher)
  • summer salary at least for the first summer
  • relocation fund
  • spousal hire if applicable
  • make sure there is clear conference money allocated yearly (response 1/15/2025)

In terms of negotiating, are these all aspects that you can negotiate together? Like let's say they will not budge on salary, does asking for multiple of these make it unreasonable? (2/19) -- I negotiated everything at the same time. I laid everything out so it was clear for me and the school on what I was looking for (2/22/25).

  • I have colleagues who have accepted job offers and also gotten answers from schools, but I have yet to hear from any school, and I am feeling a bit discouraged. Anyone else on the same boat? I wonder if it is because of timeline of applying? (1/9/25)
  • Yes, feeling the same. Have had 5 screening interviews now (4 in social work) and 0 invites for a campus visit (although still waiting to hear back from 3 of the 5-screenings were just this week). (1/10/25)
  • I'm sorry to hear this. Depending on where you are in your journey, I don't know how comforting this will be, but last year I also had 5 screening interviews and 0 campus visits. This year, I have had only 3 screening interviews and 2 campus visits. I hope you do not let it rest as a reflection of yourself or your work- there is very little rhyme or reason to this process (1/13/25)
    • Thank you all for the validation! I so appreciate it and I wish everyone the best in this process. I am unsure how I could fund an additional year to re-apply so I will probably pursue a post-doc if that is the case. I also want to clarify I have not had screening interviews scheduled (only 1) that is what I am finding odd, like not a word from any university of rejection or even interview? Idk I would expect a rejection if I was just not a fit or not "strong" enough for that school, but the radio silence is what is stressing me out. Hoping to hear something this semester!

Has anyone heard from City University of New York-Hunter College about the TT Assistant Professor position? (1/3/25)

  • I am wondering about this as well. Any offers made for these positions? (1/8/25)

Has anyone heard from Pitt about the TT Assistant Professor position? (12/20/24)

  • I was actually going to ask. There is been no update or anything from Pitt. They did the same with the search last year as well. Not entirely sure what their hiring process is. (12/21/24)

Has anyone applied to or heard from The University of Saint Joseph as of today, 12/17?

Not seeing a whole lot of activity, re: offers. I saw that someone posted ASU made an offer and now that is gone. Are people just not sharing if they received offers? Many schools should have (or will be) making offers before the end of the semester (12/11/24)

  • I was thinking/wondering the same thing. Lots of campus visits but no offers posted and I also noticed the ASU offer missing. (12/11/24)
  • I am wondering if it would be less intimidating for folks to at least share if they received/accepted an offer without disclosing where; might help relieve any insecurity people may be feeling, since sharing where you got the offer might be a bit identifying. At the same time, it may help the rest of us get a sense of what the state of the job market is. (12/12/24)
  • Folks are definitely finalizing offers, but just aren't posting here. Maybe they're still negotiating and don't want to potentially out themselves? (1/31/25)

I have a question for the postdocs on here: do y'all think it was worth it to do a postdoc? ie, if I get a TT offer that is just okay, and a great postdoc offer, is it worth it to go with the postdoc? How has the search gone for folks with postdocs? (12/10/24)

  • Talk to your advisor, but if you are up for 2 moves in a short period of time, I would see if you can defer the faculty offer for a year to take the postdoc (note: you then would have to go to that job, so maybe not ideal if you are on the fence about your TT offer). Lots of people do that, and like a good option. Going back on the market after a year or two is...not ideal!
  • Personally, I did not enjoying going back on the job market so quickly. Being in a TT allows you to focus solely on what you care about, a postdoc often does not allow for that. TTs are hard to come by and you will have more mobility after a few years in a TT, the same way you would with a postdoc. (12/10/24)
  • I was really reluctant to take a postdoc last year, mostly because I did not want to move. I managed to get a remote postdoc and if you can negoatiate being remote, I think it is okay. I don't love it, I don't hate it. I did really hate going RIGHT back on the market again. But, I am so far having much more success on the TT market this year, and all my mentors think the postdoc has looked really good on apps. Good luck!! (12/15/24)

Has anyone heard anything about Georgia? (12/7/24)

- At CSWE, their dean said Georgia is going to start contacting people for screening interviews in January (12/8)

Has anyone heard about the macro position at Boston University, or heard from VA Commonwealth? (12/6/24)

  • I have not for Boston University. 12/8/24
  • I just heard from BU -- screening interview, will update above. 12/8/24
  • BU rejected me today 12/20/24
  • I got an email from BU on 12/30/24 saying they are still reviewing applications and inviting me to their SSWR reception so seems like they are still going somehow? 12/31/24
    • was this invitation for a screening interview? or just as a general invitation? (1/14/25)
  • Anyone heard anything this week from BU?? I received the same email as the person above saying they were still reviewing and inviting me to a SSWR reception, on 12/24/24 (so a few days before poster above, I guess). I have not heard anything since. 1/7/25
    • same question as above, is this for a screening interview?
  • Campus invites have been sent out (1/6/25)
    • does this mean no more screening interviews at this time? (1/15/25)
  • anyone hear from BU? They had said in an earlier post they wanted to do campus visits mid-Jan to early-Feb? I haven’t heard anything for even a screening interview and a friend got a screening interview but hasn’t heard back about campus visits yet. We are both wondering (2/4/25)
  • I did a screener with BU the third week of December and never heard anything transparent from them since. I have another offer and explicitly asked for an update after SSWR when I got this other offer, and they just said they couldn't provide one which is frankly just silly and bad search management. I heard from a colleague with previous BU affiliation that emails had been sent to faculty announcing job talk candidates. So my guess is everyone who hasn't heard is in the "in case someone withdraws" pool. (2/10/25)
    • I can confirm this as well. Apparently huge pool of postdocs applied (2/12/25)

When people post they received an "official interview" do they mean a campus visit? If so, could you log it under Schools that have schedule campus visits. If you just a screening interview, please disregard this message. 11/19/2024

Has anyone heard from Simmons, Boston University, or Boston College? 11/14/2024 I have not, but I heard the dean would like a associate professor. (11/18/24)

  • Boston University posting says not to apply on HR website, but does not provide instructions on how to apply. Does anyone know how to submit an application there? They provided an email address for questions, but I reached out and have not heard back. (11/19/24)
  • You apply on Higher Ed. You should get an email from the chair saying they received your materials. (11/19/24)
    • The link there just goes back to their HR site (11/19/24)
    • Hmmm, email the materials to the email you mentioned? Not sure how that will help with letters of rec... Try reaching out again. I can't even find the link on Chronicles of Higher Ed now. Did they close the app? 11/20/24
    • The app shows up as closed on Chronicles of Higher Ed, but not on Higher Ed Jobs or their website. I was told to email materials to swsearch@bu.edu (which is the email listed on the post, though the post doesn't say to send materials to that email, so I was confused as well) 12/11/24

I haven’t checked the page in a while and I’m surprised to see how few discussion posts there are. I came to ask how everyone is feeling about job searching after the election? I feel hopeless and like there is now no point in pursuing a job in higher ed.

  • I feel as hopeful as I did before for actually getting a TT job, which is not very hopeful. I am worried that higher education and social work will be at risk too.
  • I don't feel like there is no point, but I do wonder if any searches will be cancelled due to future funding concerns?
    • Funding is typically pre-approved the year before, or at the very least, before they announce the search so that shouldn't happen. 11/11/24
    • Related, though. Does anyone have any thoughts about what kind of school is "safer" to land at? private schools? public schools? 11/11/24
    • I personally am more worried about what this means for next year. There have been very limited jobs last year and this year, but it feels like if we aren't successful this year, it could get even worse.... 11/12/24
    • This is a scary reality. This is my first year on the job market; it is exhausting, grueling, and emotional. This is the hardest thing I have ever done; the unknown is scary, even with getting a callback and interviews. 11-12-24
    • agreed, this whole process is very difficult. How are others feeling (11/18)
    • It's my first time on the job market as well. And I can't wait for it to be done :/ I know people keep saying there's a place for everyone but it's so stressful (11/18)
    • Related: This is my first time navigating the job market and it just seems so grueling, but I don't know how this year compares to others. I learned that one place is flying out 5 applicants for 2 Assistant Professor positions. I don't know if this is the norm in terms of ratio of campus invites to actual number of offers, but overall it feels like there are limited jobs for the number of applicants. 11/12/24
      • One school I know is flying out 6 applicants for 2 positions so I think that's pretty standard. 11/15/24

There seem to be far fewer applicants monitoring this page than last year. Do we think this is reflective of actual applicant numbers? (9/28/24)

  • Yes, fewer people monitoring and updating this year -- I know lots of postings this year were added to this site late. I'm mostly looking for non-academic jobs but come here sometimes to check. There's a lot of missing interview/flyout data too. Since they're not my interviews, I don't think it's appropriate to post. I think the reduced monitoring is less about fewer people applying and more about fear. People are hoarding information, given the scarcity of jobs and the impending fascist attack on education and the populations we serve.
  • Hmmm but what’s the point in withholding info about flyouts?
  • People hoard information in times of information scarcity and insecurity.
  • Just want to put out there that sharing information reduces insecurity and is a community value. We can choose to operate from a place of abundance and good will. Thanks to all sharing info here: it is very helpful.

Seems a couple of important posts were missing? Like Boston University and University of Georgia. just an FYI. And what about Utah?

  • I don't know about those missing positions but I know the Loyola positions never got posted here and that they've likely concluded first round interviews.

https://careers.cswe.org/jobseeker/search/results/

Is the level of detail currently included in the job posts necessary?? It’s overwhelming to me, and makes it very difficult to scroll throgh the list. Last year we used brief descriptions and included links to the full description. How do others feel?? (7/23/24)

  • Agreed; it's way too much detail and the most pertinent info is getting lost in a sea of text.
  • While I understand the concern about the level of detail in the job posts (and personally agree), I wonder if asking people to edit the existing job descriptions to fit a more concise format might be prohibitive. The additional time and effort to revise and condense these postings rather than just pasting the descriptions might discourage people from updating them regularly. For me, I just need the university/school/department, position, and link to the job posting.

Who is looking forward to doing this again?? Really stoked. Not rethinking my life decisions at all.

  • Last year the job market was cruel. Hope this year there will be more jobs.

Not a lot of open job listings out right now... I hear higher ed ran out of stimulus money and now enrollment declines are hitting a lot of schools really hard. Some schools closed or merged departments. Many places are starting up new online programs to compete with everyone else, but it's a limited pool. The top schools in big cities should be okay, but mid or lower tier universities in smaller cities and especially privates or religious schools with a humanities focus will suffer.

Schools That Have Interviewed[]

  • The Ohio State University has started virtual screening interviews (9/17/2024)
    • Just got a rejection email following virtual screening interview (on 9/24) that they are proceeding with other candidates (10/1/24)
    • Interviewed late September and got a campus visit about a week later (10/15/24)
    • Interviewed late September and still haven't heard back (10/15/24)

Interview/General questions[]

What are the most common questions people practice to prepare for screeners and job talks? I typically try to have my research interests/areas, my teaching experience, why that school. Are there others you regularly plan for to prep?

  • Some also ask about service and experience with/plans for applying for external funding (11/10)
  • Your research agenda and future research trajectory, Your teaching experience and interests related to social work, How you envision incorporating service in your academic career, And how your current research and teaching addresses issues related to social justice, diversity, and inclusion. (11/15/24)

I am curious what others think about the gap between screening interview/campus invite. If you are going to get invited for a campus visit, do you think it usually happens pretty quickly? If more than a couple of weeks go by should I give up hope? (11/10)

  • From my perspective, it seems like it really depends on the school. Some schools are moving quickly and want to have offers out by the end of the semester while others have said they may not invite people to campus until December or January. (11/11)
  • I wouldn't give up hope. However, I would ask for a general timeline during a screener interview. That way, you can have an idea if you did or did not "make the cut." A dean also told me that sometimes they will do campus invites for a first round, then another if they still haven't found a good fit. Same thing for an offer. You may not be the first choice, but that doesn't mean you won't get an offer, depends on the school and their practices. 11/11/24
  • I definitely wouldn't give up hope - I'm on a search committee this year and there's a lot of bureaucracy involved in the process. Multiple people have to approve each stage of a search (ie, department, department chair, dean's office, faculty affairs groups, etc.) which can take an unnecessary amount of time. Keep the faith :)
    • curious if you could share the approx number of applicants in the pool for your search?
    • Yep - first round was rough, only 14.
      • How many rounds are there usually? or does this mean first round as in screening interviews? Also, do you feel like this year has been less applicants than previous years?
  • Is it unheard of to have multiple candidates that align with what the school wants and potentially make 2 positions? or is that not even a possibility? I just keep thinking wow these schools have to narrow it down so much.
    • I have seen this happen at my institution (had 1 position available and created a 2nd one because they wanted to invite 2 of the candidates), just depends on how much funding the school has available (1/19/25)

Tenure-Track Assistant/Associate Professor

The University of Montana, School of Social Work, invites applications for a tenure-track assistant/associate professor to begin August 2025.

The School of Social Work is recognized for its foundational work in competency-based social work education at the bachelor’s level which includes an innovative 2 2 program where, in partnership with rural and Tribal colleges across the state, students complete their junior and senior years remotely through the School and are able to earn a BSW while remaining in their community. The School of Social Work also houses an innovative MSW program grounded in an advanced integrated practice model. This approach is premised on the inseparability of individual struggles and social issues such as poverty, discrimination, oppression, and social injustice. Our MSW program is offered in both face-to-face and asynchronous online modalities. In addition, the School launched a synchronous online Advanced Standing program in the Summer of 2024.

All programs strive to prepare students as practitioners, community leaders, and scholars able to address the complex demands of 21st century social work. The School is committed to preparing students at both the bachelor’s and master’s levels who will uphold social work’s responsibility to disrupt systems of oppression, employ critical thinking skills, center anti-racist and anti-oppressive practice and embrace multiple forms of knowledge that promote the dignity and worth of clients.

The School of Social Work is growing with the addition of online options at the Masters level and continued strong enrollment in our BSW campus and distance programs. These programs help us respond to the workforce needs of our state and region. The School relies on our small yet dedicated faculty to support intentional program growth that maintains integrity in the curriculum while remaining student centered. As such, successful candidates for this position will be committed to academic leadership opportunities in the short and long term. Candidates should speak to academic leadership experience and commitment in application materials.

The University of Montana is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity employer and has a strong institutional commitment to the principle of diversity in all areas.
