Salaries[]

Inspired by other fields represented in this wiki, I thought it would be interesting to post basic information of the offers we have received in order to get a better idea of what the working conditions of our field are. (Lo de R1, R2 ya no se usa. R1 puede ser: (RU/VH) (RU/H) (DRU) ESTO NO ES CIERTO. LAS "NUEVAS R1" SON UNICAMENTE LAS RU/VU, PERO DE ESTAS SON MUY POCAS LAS QUE SE PREOCUPEN POR EL ESPANNOL. Y ADEMAS NO TODAS LAS RU/VH SON DEL MISMO NIVEL. POR EJEMPLO, LAS QUE TIENEN 2/3 DE CARGA LECTIVA SON DE "SEGUNDA DIVISION"...MEJOR PREOCUPARON DE ENSENNAR BIEN Y OLVIDAROS DE TANTO NOMBRE, QUE SOLAMENTE ESTAIS ENSENNANDO ESPANNOL, QUE INCLUSO ESTA CONSIDERADO DE SEGUNDA DIVISION EN COMPARACION CON EL INGLES, O SEA QUE IMAGINAROS CUANDO LO PONEIS AL LADO DE LA MEDICINA, LEYES, ETC...ME HACE GRACIA LA GENTE QUE DICE HAGO RESEARCH EN ESPANNOL...

Offers Made/ Accepted []

I liked this subheading from last year, because it gave you a quick running look at what offers are being made and accepted and when. So I'm proposing it be reinstated this year. (THANK YOU!!!) Example:

Arizona State U- 1/27 (Golden Age?) A: Yes, offer accepted.

Arizona State U - Latin American Cultural Studies (2 positions filled... additional line created during search)

Arkansas State U- 1 offer made and accepted (Latin Americanist 2/20). Still one position open.

Could you specify if it's for the Latinamericanist or for the Peninsularist position? Thank you, R: There are two positions period, there was not one that was specifically LA or Peninsular, so if they made two offers, it is for the two positions

Baylor U: offer accepted in Literature.

Boise State University: offer accepted!

Bucknell- January ?? Extended, and accepted

Boston Univ. - Offer made and accepted (posted on Mar. 14th, see below)

Central Michigan Univeristy (2/24 - email that cultural studies position has been filled)

Central Michigan University (Golden Age/Medieval) offer not accepted..Q: Are they gonna open the position again? A. The offer was made to another candidate and it was accepted.

Clark - offer accepted

College of Charleston - offer accepted

Colorado State University at Pueblo, offer accepted.

Creighton- search completed, email 2/22

Dartmouth (Peninsular) - offer acepted

DePaul University

Duke University

Elon University - offer accepted

Elmhurst College (offer made and accepted)

Emory & Henry (accepted 1/27)

Fairfield (offer made and accepted)

Fordham University (offer made and accepted)

Franklin College (position has been filled, email 2/9)

Franklin & Marshall (offer made and accepted) - There were two VAP positions. Which one was accepted? Colonial or the one in poetry?

Grand Valley State University - generalist - (received email that position has been filled 3/5)

Hampden-Sydney College (offer made, Feb 29) (offer accepted, March 1)

Idaho State University (offer made & accepted, March 8)

James Madison University (position has been filled, email 2/3)

Marietta College - Asst. Prof. of Spanish TT (accepted)

Middlebury College - Asst. Prof. of Spanish TT (accepted)

Middlebury College - VAP Spanish (accepted)

MIT (Lecturer)

New York University/ AP/FF Pensinsular Lit (accepted)

New York University/ Colonialist (offer made) Q: Was this offer accepted? No. Candidate prefered a 2nd offer.

North Central College (search completed, email 2/22)

Northwestern (offer made and accepted)

Ohio State University (offer made and rejected)

Ohio Wesleyan University (offer made and accepted)

Pacific University offer made and rescinded (!) for lack of funding. A: I am sorry to hear that. The same happened to two different people I know of last year. R: Thanks... in this case, it ultimately worked out for the best for the candidate, but man... talk about unprofessional.

Penn State (offer made; second hand).

Portland State University (offer made and accepted)

Princeton University (offer made)

Saint Olaf (offer made and accepted)

Santa Clara (accepted in Dec.)

Sewanee: The University of the South (offer made)

Spelman College - Search ended WITHOUT selection of successful candidate. They intend to search again in 2012-2013. Letter received in mail.

Tufts University (offer made and accepted)

University of California, Berkeley - Offer made and accepted

University of California, Riverside - Offer made and accepted (second hand) (first hand)

University of Georgia, Lecturer in Portuguese - Offer made and accepted.

University of Illinois, Chicago - looks like it (the peninsular position) went to a faculty spouse, so presumably accepted. (Q: Is this the film or the peninsular position? Thanks!) see edit.

Q: And have you heard anything else post-interview? A: Not yet x 3. Q: any news?? A: Not yet (12/20) x 8 Q: Really? This is so weird...I guess they have contacted someone and that person is just quiet... I have heard about someone being contacted already, can't provide more details. A: A woman, a Princeton grad student. She is still writing the dissertation. Q: They should have three finalists in any case, right? Also, would they not send us a rejection email? A: Well, I guess they do not have a lot of money -the reason why they interviewed via skype. So, I guess they will invite a candidate and, if they are not happy with "her", they will contact two others. However, there are also two other inside candidates... A: I see. It makes more sense now. A: I am pretty sure they will go for one of the "inside" since there is a HUGE difference among them and the one "outsider". A: That's is probably true. The two inside persons: one did not get tenure at Emory and the other has been visiting professor since graduated from Cornell. They probably called an ABD because usually ABDs don't even negotiate salary. Q: This search smells a little...you know...

A: Although looking up people's IP is a bit much, the fact of the matter is that most of the info that talked about how the whole search was rigged was totally true. This was never a real search because they had the inside candidate already picked for the position, in fact the ad was placed to fit that candiate. Q: So, an offer was made? A. Yes, an offer was made to the inside candidate (who is the wife of a faculty in that department), as was stated many times on this page and erased.

University of Louisville - offer made and accepted.

University of Missouri, Columbia

University of South Alabama Offer made 3/9, not accepted.

University of South Carolina Offer made and accepted, (Mexican Literature Position).

Univeristy of South Dakota Offer made and accepted.

University of Southern California (accepted)

University of Texas, Austin (offer made) NOT accepted (!!??) Candidate prefered a 2nd offer. A. Email that position has been filled...so someone has accepted (3/5)

University of Texas, Panamerican Offer made and accepted (2nd hand) Q: Does anyone know which position this is for? Applied ling. or Latin Amerin lit?

University of Washington at Seattle-Colonialist/TT (offer made 2/2) Q: Does anyone know if this was accepted? // A: I think it was finally accepted in late February, but this is second hand info. Search completed email 3/13

Just a comment: I got several e-mails from them requesting extra material and/or making me additional questions. The last e-mail I got was asking me if I frequented any church in my area, and which one was it. Next day they contacted the other candidates, and not me. So for the ones going to the interview, just know this seems to be a very, very important issue for them. If you happen to be a baptist you should be fine ;) (R to R1: I'm not Baptist and they have been fine with that so far) R2: I interviewed with them several years ago; they prefer Baptists (of course) but seemed willing (at least then) to hire other Christians (including Catholics). I feel bad saying this, but it's the truth -- you probably don't want to be there if you aren't of a similar mindset

Rejection post-MLA: Finalist have been contacted. (2nd hand reliable).

Campus visit: extended (3rd hand; please correct if someone has better info.) at least one scheduled (2nd hand) // 2 candidates have been invited (1st hand) Q: Literature or Linguistics? A: both

Campus visit: have not they called for the Medieval/Golden Age yet? they said they were going to do it this week the latest.

Campus visit scheduled (1/21): for which position, if you don't mind sharing? (Jan 23) Med & Golden Age. A: What happened to the generalist position? The internal candidate? In theory, the Medieval/Golden Age position was thought for the husband of a professor in the department but who knows. Plus, nobody knows what is going on with the generalist position. There were campus visits for the generalist position.
Offer made: 2/23 - email that the generalist position was filled

Request for more materials:
Rejection:
Preliminary interview (skype, MLA, phone) scheduled: 11/30 MLA x3 (Are they calling or emailing?) R: emailing. Q: Did they contact everyone on the 30th? A: How do you think individual candidates would know?
Rejection post-MLA:
Campus visit: scheduled. (2nd Hand) Any news? can anyone confirm this? R: Confirmed. First Hand.

Cleveland State University - Asst. Prof. Spanish TT - Dec. 9[]

Request for more materials: They called asking for missing materials (12/23) x 5 (12/16) x1
Rejection: (received letter on Feb 13) x 2
Preliminary interview (skype, MLA, phone) scheduled: MLA interview (12/23) x5

Q: How can this be, if still asking for missing materials? A: I have no idea why they are asking for missing materials, but I have also scheduled an interview with them. B: My guess is the missing materials folks are contingently on the short list(?), maybe a last minute MLA or phone interview will come of it, campus closed til 1-3 so we will probably be hearing from them after that... C: It's a bit puzzling, but I'm glad they let me know about the missing materials, whether that results in an interview or no. D: The weird thing is that my materials weren't actually missing. I hope it's the short list...E. I think it's all very fishy. Calling the day before the school closes for the holidays... C2: I didn't think I had missing materials, either, but they did ask for the most documentation of any of the jobs I'd applied for...so it's possible to let something slip in the tumult. And they probably called after they had made their lists. I'm guessing that those who were asked for further materials might get a second look once the campus opens again. Fingers crossed, and all that. C: I was also contacted about "missing" materials on 12/23, but there was in fact nothing missing. Respondent: MLA started today. No word. Harumph.

Rejection post-MLA: 1 x2 (letter, 2/20)
Campus visit: news after MLA? Scheduled (second hand).
Offer made: someone posted 4/14 that an offer was accepted, which was subsequently erased. ?

Rejection post-MLA: (email, Feb 10)
Campus visit: 12/15--Can anyone confirm? On this same day I received a message explaining their timeline, but not a direct invitiation to campus. Confirmed! Q: Did you (or whoever was contacted) in fact get a direct invitation on the 15th of December, or was it more recent than that?' If so, do you perhaps know the date of the visit? Q: Why are all these specifics so important? R: Sorry, they probably aren't that important. I was under the impression that they wouldn't be contacting anyone until January, so was surprised when I saw that invites went out so soon after the skype interviews. Just being hopeful that there was still a chance for me (or a couple of my friends). 'Thanks anyway for confirming.

Rejection post-MLA:
Campus visit: extended 1/12/12 Q: Anyone know how many people they have invited? There are two positions there, so I'm trying to decide if I should hold out hope that they haven't made all invites at once.

I know the job announcement said they were going to give preference to Canadian citizens....? R: Congrats on the visit. Seems like a great place (school and town). Thanks for updating the info. I had assumed that they had completed the interviews when they extended the invitation. Anyway, it was a nice place with beautiful scenery, great faculty, and lively students. R: They must have . . . my sense of the calendar must be screwy. ¡Suerte!

Preliminary interview (skype, MLA, phone) scheduled: 12/23 MLA (x2). A. So considering the info below, this interview info is bull? A. It's true, one of the search committee members mentioned interviewing for the position during his panel presentation at MLA last week. Q: Any news post MLA?
Rejection post-MLA:
Campus visit:

  • Any update post MLA/Skype interviews?
  • Email from dept. confirmiing receipt of materials said committee would meet in January X 8. SHAME ON THE DEPARTMENT FOR MISLEADING INFO. A: No need for caps locks here. Meeting in January in no way excludes interviewing at the MLA.A. Unless you're actually on the committee and are trying to make yourself look good, your comment makes no sense. A: No, I am not a member of the search committee. The note I received stated that the committee would meet in January "to consider all applications received." As I see it, the wording of this note is intentionally open to interpretation, since it doesn't exclude *some* applicants from being interviewed before this meeting.
  • Email from dept. confirmiing receipt of materials said committee would meet in December (x2). Q: Are you sure in light of the emails mentioned above? A: Just seconded this, and yes, I'm sure it said Dec. No reason to think the MLA info posted above is incorrect, although I myself have not been offered an interview.A: Just goes to show how far being "open minded" gets you.
  • Weird. I got snail mail confirmation early (sent in materials early), but no mention of when the committee would meet.

Word on the Street[]

  • Anyone know what is going on with the Assistant Professor of Spanish position at Alvernia University? It was posted in April 2012, and it starts this September.
  • Any word on USC? At MLA they weren't sure the position was going to be funded by the dean. Will/have they continued w/ the search and started campus interviews? ANSWER (2/27/12): 2 of 3 short listers have been to campus. One more this scheduled this week or next.
  • Question: This is my first MLA so I am not sure how thing go. But, if I didn't get any call backs this week does this mean its a done deal or do people think search committees may still be meeting next week. Thanks for any info. R: You can expect to wait at least until the end of this week, if not more. On the other hand, for future reference, it is good to ask about the timeline in your initial interview so you have a sense of their timing. Some schools don't even reconvene until early February! So, hang tight.
  • Question: I recently defended my Ph.D. in what is widely considered a top department. My dissertation committee was not only very strong but also enthusiastic about my work. And, not to boast but simply for the sake of being factual, I went on the job market with a very formidable CV. Yet I received a grand total of zero MLA interviews this year. I wondered - Am I the only one? Is it time to leave academia? Any advice from those who have been on hiring committees in recent years? R: Though you are proud of your recent accomplishments (and well you should be) perhaps your expectations (geographic, top research institutions) may have been out of sync with your actual (or perceived) level of experience. What sort of institutions did you pick? Were you especially selective about the region? Do you have a very specific geographical focus in your research that makes you look like a "bad fit" for the jobs you applied to? I've found that as you do this more, you get a better sense of what they are looking for and what you can realistically expect. That said, there is still a second round this year that extends into May, so, don't give up, it is your FIRST year with Ph.D. in hand. Instead, try to examine how to sell yourself to specific institutions and, perhaps, be willing to settle for something that you may (secretly) consider beneath you! R2: Another thing to consider is that the market has been pretty tough the last few years and that there are many first and second year Assistant Professors who are likely trying to "move up" from their current positions into some of the jobs to which you're applying. IT IS also a matter of numbers: too many candidates for just a few positions. I'm from an Ivy League (HPY), I recently graduated and got "Honors" in my dissertation, and I've published 3 articles in top notch journals. I had 5 interviews but 0 campus visits so far. The thing is, I have many friends of mine, who are 10 years younger than me, working in marketing, law, or computer science, make 4 times the money I make as a Visiting, and they can find jobs very easily. I wish somebody had told me 6 years ago: ARE YOU CRAZY? Don't get a PhD in literature!! But it's too late for that, I guess. I will say that maybe you are narrowing down your search to a specific region. I graduated from an Ivy league school and the first time on the job market, I couldn't find anything. I was, to say the least, heartbroken. However, after speaking with the department head of a department, he was honest and told me: "You'll probably have to go to the middle of nowhere America to work your way up and teach near a region of your liking." With that mentality, I expanded my search and got a job in a regional instituion, after getting tenure, I ventured out in the market and made it to the exact region i wanted. I will say hang tight, expand your search and be patient. If you put all this work, you will be rewarded, it just may not be as soon as you would like it.
  • UMass Boston Hispanic Studies is a dream department to work for. Take my word on this. Whoever lands the TT there is lucky. Yes: I have good intel.
  • Don't limit your search just to postings on the MLA, some schools for one reason or another do not post on the MLA, but rather use the Chronicle or Higheredjobs...
  • Has anyone heard from Clark University? Still nothing? They seem to take their time. The closing date was almost one month ago. I am going on hunger-strike until someone hears from Clark. R: Then you will likely die. They might call people on Dec. 30th. No one knows when these people decide to do this kind of drudge work. R: They acknowledged the receipt of my docs 11/29. R: I was invited to MLA interview several days ago.
  • Any word re: the 3-year non-TT at M.I.T.?
  • 3-year non TT at M.I.T (Spanish): Campus visits (4 candidates) were in November, before Thanksgiving. - R1: No, I meant the 3-year non TT in Portuguese (not Spanish) at M.I.T. --- were these the candidates who did campus visits in November? Also: firsthand or secondhand knowledge? Thank you.
  • To whoever commented (above) on UMass Boston HS Department: Take my word on this: you are too naive to know about it. There is no "dream" department to work for in academia. Good Luck and get the best job! Once you are inside be colegial, and just keep doing your work against the odds. R1: Girl you trippen', and I think you mean "whomever." To OP re R1: ZING!!! Response from OP to R1: It is in fact a dream department to work for. U mad? . Please stop trashing. Wanna be sure if that is a good dept. for you? When you go there for the campus visit, you will see it you like it or not. Then you are free to say "thanks but not thanks", or "yes, this is my life". R2: "Whoever" was correct.
  • I think it's depressing how hostile this wiki has gotten. Someone posts "word on the street" and other people bash. Why? There's no reason to behave like this towards potential colleagues. The market is tough enough. Why are we fighting amongst ourselves? A. This is a good indication of the "tone" in academia. The people who write these things are your current or future colleagues.
  • Does anyone know whether universities contact everyone the same day when scheduling interviews? Is there a norm? A: Not necessarily the same day. "Norms" will depend on each College / U policies. I've almost always been contacted by email first, only once by phone first. R2: Some do not contact everyone on the same day. R3: Take it from an MLA VETERAN..you will find LOTS (about a third to half) of schools doing interviews at MLA will contact you by phone especially as it gets closer to the time of the conference, as they have less time to schedule interviews, also, trying to schedule an interview via email is a pain in the ass if you have several other interviews during the MLA. This is less the case with phone interviews where it is usually a larger group of people doing the interview. As far as the same day, a lot of times it is, but not always, especially if they contacted you via phone, as it is obviously takes more time to call everyone individually, I've gotten a call up to two or three days after the interviews were posted on the wiki, and some committee's consider applications as they come in..the norm is the same day or within a day or two. My advice, send out your application materials, and then forget about it, then its such a lovely surprise when that phone rings asking to talk to you at MLA..and not a frantic two weeks of checking the wiki constantly to see if your dream job has contacted anyone yet.
  • Nobody has heard from St. Olaf? Really? Don't believe it. If anyone knows anything, let us know so we can move on!
  • Question to the more experienced (might sound rather naive, I know): if a skype interview is scheduled, does that mean this is preliminary screening (prior to MLA) or that this is the only interview (no more MLA interview)? Thanks! Answer: It is the actual intervew, it substitutes a MLA interview
  • Subquestion to the above: If a post reports people getting skype interviews, but says nothing about MLA interviews, does this mean one might still get an MLA interview even if one didn't get a skype interview? That is, do some schools do both kinds? Or if there is a skype interview are they not going to MLA? Answer: the different departments choose their own method of interviewing candidates: some interview at the MLA, others on the phone, and others via skype.
  • Delaware: crappy location, mediocre Spanish department....
    • This sounds like sour grapes... or someone trying to manipulate the search.
    • Come on incrédulo/a... All that matters is that there is a "star" in the department! And who would want to teach at one of the top 10 party schools??
  • Does anybody know the average timeframe for universities to e-mail candidates for the MLA? I guess the bulk of e-mails inviting people for MLA interviews would be between now and the 21st or so? I got a couple of phone interviews (substituting MLA interviews) but no MLA interviews so far, and I'm kind of getting a little uneasy here.. A: With email now, depts. stretch interview invitations to the limit. Once I received an email on the 23rd in the evening. That said, you should pretty much consider it a done deal by Friday before Christmas, at least as far as MLA interviews are concerned.
  • Western Washington University is in an absolutely gorgeous location and has a remarkable student population. They're not required to take foreign language classes, but they all do because they *want* to. It seems like it would be a great place to live and to teach. (One disadvantage is their starting salaries are very low, or at least they were the last time I checked a few years ago. But they're also unionized, so you may make up the difference over time with regular increases, though I'm not too sure about that.) R2: Nice people, too. (I'm at a nearby university, and I've interacted with several of the professors at regional conferences.)
  • Has anyone heard from Dartmouth (18th and 19th Peninsular)? It's not even on the list. A: I have heard second hand that they are conducting skype interviews this week.... A: "It's not *even* on the list" .. . . Who do you think puts these things on the list? Put it there if you don't see it . . . .thus functions the open wiki where anyone can edit it.
  • A little peeved here. En mi comentario, dije que "with these ass clowns, you never know." R: Ass clown? Éso fue lo mejor que pudiste producir. Me suena muy raro. Basta con "clowns." Sus culos no entran en el asunto. Ya nos borran, pero bueno. Me da gracia tu explicación. Suerte. R: And I know about somebody, couple of years ago, who was invited to a campus visit at Princeton without being interviewed before (not skype, not MLA). So weird things do happen :(.
