Job List  (Oct 4/2013).[]

This seriously has to be the worst year for 19thC / Victorian jobs since 2009. It is just awful.

I know. I'm applying for some post-docs, but I'm not willing to move my family cross-country for a year, unless the post-doc is the type that will actually give me a leg up in the market next year. So many "post-docs" are positions designed to fill teaching gaps in gen ed courses. Nope. I have some technical skills and I would rather stay put and hone those.  72.208.34.84 16:42, October 5, 2013 (UTC)MEB

  • That is a smart attitude. At some point, you have to ask yourself how much you value your life and sanity (I am 100% in the same boat as you). I wonder how many out there on search committees realize just how bad this market is and has been for the last five years? How many lives have been put on hold or put through hell? If they cut people slack becuase they have been moving each year and/or working a 5/5 to put food on the table? Seriously, this whole profession needs to change. It can't go on like this!

Victorian Jobs[]

(moved from front page 10/4/13)

  • Where are all the Victorian jobs? Two in the whole world? This is weird, right?
  • And one of them is basically Environmental Lit. Really, only one dept. anywhere is just looking for someone to teach the 70 or so years that Victorian covers??
  • Yup, it's shaping up to be a terrible year for Victorian. Cross your fingers for postdocs.
  • It always fluctuates. Last year was a banner year for Victorian and C19. This year...not so much, so far.
  • It's also very possible that a few more jobs will come online over the next few weeks. I know we don't want to count on that, but it's probably something we want to be ready to handle-- especially as that means that many of us will be smack in the middle of very busy (I have 4 classes) quarters and semesters.
  • You can also go back through the past few years' wikis to compare. Obviously this year is not looking good but, besides last year (as the above poster mentions), I don't recall a lot of Victorian jobs being out there.
