Students of the IAC cohort major in a wide variety of disciplines across the humanities, arts, and social sciences. Some are artists, performers, and makers. Through the generous bequests of Robert M. Kingdon and Friedrich and Lieselotte Solmsen, the Institute for Research in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin–Madison is pleased to announce competitions for two Robert M. Kingdon Fellowships and four Solmsen Fellowships for the academic year 2025-2026, to be awarded to scholars from outside the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
Kingdon Fellowships sponsor scholars working in the humanities in the historical, literary, artistic, and/or philosophical studies of Christian and/or Jewish religious traditions and their role in society. Projects may focus on any period from antiquity to the present, on any part of the world, and in any field(s) in the humanities. They may explore various forms of the Jewish and/or Christian traditions; the interaction of one or both of these with other religious traditions; and/or the relationship of one or both of these religions to other aspects of society within or outside of Europe.
Solmsen Fellowships are to be awarded to scholars working in the humanities on European history, literature, philosophy, politics, religion, art and culture in the classical, medieval, and/or early modern periods (before 1700). Projects on the relationship of pre-1700 Europe to other parts of the world are also welcome.
Kingdon and Solmsen Fellows are expected to be in residence at the IRH throughout the academic year (except for short research trips, lectures, conferences, etc.) and may extend this residency through the following summer on a non-stipendiary basis. However, the fellowship may not be deferred for any reason. The award provides a stipend of $60,000, office space, support services, and access to all university facilities. Fellows are expected to present their work at an Institute seminar and participate in the weekly seminars. Applicants must be in possession of the doctorate at the time of application.
Applications are due Thursday, October 24, 2024. Notification of awards will be made by early March. Scholars with projects applicable to both fellowship calls are welcome to apply to both the Kingdon and Solmsen competitions.

The Department of Theater & Performance Studies at Occidental College invites applications for a tenure‐track Assistant Professor of Theater & Performance Studies with an area of expertise in theatrical scenic design for appointment to begin on August 16, 2025.
The Assistant Professor of Theater & Performance Studies, with an area of expertise in scenic design, will teach introductory, intermediate, and advanced courses in theatrical design, scenic design, and preferably (but not mandatory) lighting design. They will be expected to teach courses that rotate across departmental faculty (Topics in Theater & Performance History and Senior Seminar). They also will teach other courses in the program in their area of interest. And, on occasion, in the college’s First Year Seminar writing and community-engaged program. They will collaborate with department faculty and staff to plan curriculum and productions. They will design and paint scenery (and, if possible also design lighting), as well as supervise student designers and prop and design assistants for mainstage productions. This faculty member will be an essential member of a dynamic department, advising and mentoring students, as well as participating in college and department service which will occasionally include assessment, grant reporting, and faculty reviews. The Department of Theatre and Dance at The University of Texas at Austin invites applications from qualified scholars specializing in theatre history. The appointment will be at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level, with an anticipated start date of Fall 2025.
Possible areas of expertise are open with flexibility in focus and scale, including local, national, regional and/or global history and timeframes from ancient to the 21st century. We seek methodological and geographic expertise that complements and/or expands current faculty strengths. We are especially interested in expertise in the theatrical histories of Europe and their transnational influences and routes of circulation. Duties will include development of a nationally recognized profile as a scholar, undergraduate and graduate-level teaching, contributions to the department's core theater history curriculum as well as to the Performance as Public Practice (PPP) Graduate Program's courses, development of courses on the candidate's areas of expertise, and mentorship of graduate students.
The successful candidate will serve as faculty in the highly collaborative and interdisciplinary PPP program. This program focuses on the historical development, cultural and theoretical contexts, and artistic significance of theatre, dance and performance disciplines and institutions, as well as the interrelationships of these fields and the role of performance in public spheres. PPP works closely with the departmental programs in Acting, Dance, Directing and Playwriting, Drama and Theatre for Youth and Communities/Theatre Education, and Live Design and Production. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellence in theatre design and production in professional, community, and/or academic theatre. For consideration, candidates must also demonstrate proficiency as a teaching artist with interdisciplinary interests and their ability to support the liberal arts mission of the college. - As soon as anybody hears back from Bellevue College in WA please let us know here. HR gave an estimate that they'd let applicants know "between one week and SIX MONTHS after submission." As you can imagine, I'd like to shorten that window if possible...
- I called HR too and they gave an update (04/14): The applications are currently being reviewed, however, the quarter just started so it'll likely be a few more weeks before people are contacted for interviews.
