Baldwin Wallace University (OH) - Faculty Position – Acting - Open Rank 

The Department of Theatre and Dance at Baldwin Wallace University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track open rank faculty position in Acting, beginning August 2016.  

• The successful candidate will teach acting courses for BFA in Acting, BA in Theatre, and BM in Music Theatre students; teach additional courses in area of expertise (i.e., on-camera, stage combat, devised theatre, commedia, Alexander, etc.); recruit for the BFA in Acting; advise students; service on department and university-wide committees is expected.

California State University - San Marcos (CA) - Assistant Professor - Theatre

Minimum qualifications: An MFA or PhD is required. Degree must be completed by August 2016. Expertise and skills are required in one or more of the following areas: lighting design, projection design, or sound design. Candidate must be qualified to teach introductory courses in theatre design, and must be committed to student-centered education as well as professional development, service, and creative and/or academic scholarship.

Desired/preferred qualifications: In addition, we seek a colleague who can teach courses in an area of theatre history, literature or practice that expands upon our current tenure-track faculty offerings. Applicants should demonstrate strong interpersonal and organizational skills, an ability to collaborate with theatre and dance colleagues, dynamic leadership skills and the desire to educate young theatre artists with passion and effectiveness. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated intercultural competence with diverse groups in teaching, research and/or service. Carnegie Mellon University (PA) - School of Drama - TT Assistant Professor (Acting) - SKYPE INTERVIEW STAGE

Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama, a professional BFA acting conservatory program, seeks a full time Acting teacher at the level of Assistant Professor (Tenure Track).

Connecticut College (CT) - Assistant Professor of Theater (Production Management/Tech Direction/Design) - CAMPUS INTERVIEW STAGE

The Department of Theater at Connecticut College invites applications for an assistant professor of Theater. This is a faculty-staff position in production management, technical direction, stage management, and/or lighting, scenic, or sound design, beginning July 1, 2016. The faculty portion (.8) of the position will be considered continuing part-time; continuing part-time faculty receive multi-year contracts (3 years initially) and are eligible for sabbaticals, but do not hold tenure. The successful candidate will teach courses in technical production and provide production management for a vibrant season of three mainstage performances and a student senior capstone festival. Depending on areas of expertise they may contribute design for a limited number of said productions. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, mentoring students, tracking crew work, scheduling, etc. Weekend and evening hours are required. MFA and a minimum of two years teaching experience required.

Christopher Newport University - TT Assistant Professor of Theater (Acting and Voice/Speech) - OFFER ACCEPTED

The Department of Theater and Dance at Christopher Newport University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Theater, effective August 15, 2016. Applicants must be committed to undergraduate education and demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching and research with undergraduates. The position will specialize in Acting, Voice and Speech. The ideal candidate will be a practicing professional artist, hold professional affiliations (AEA, SDC, VASTA, etc.) and be an energetic and collegial collaborator. The successful candidate will teach courses related to her or his area of specialization, as well as Introduction to Theater and survey courses in world theater history.

Davidson College (NC) - TT Assistant Professor in Theatrical Design and Technology

DAVIDSON COLLEGE, a highly-selective, nationally-ranked, residential, four-year liberal arts college with a vibrant theatre program and excellent facilities, invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor, in Theatrical Design and Technology, with a primary specialization in set design, and secondary specialization in lighting, digital, media, and/or projection design. Position begins August 1, 2016. Essential Functions: The successful candidate will teach beginning and advanced courses in design; preferred areas for advanced courses include set, lighting, projection, and digital media design. Preference will be given to candidates who can contribute to our curriculum through teaching competency in at least one area outside of design.

Successful candidates will also be fluent in current digital tools for design, with the possibility of cross-listing a course in Digital Studies.

The teaching load is five courses per year with one course equivalency granted for the scenic design of two mainstage productions; additional design work for course credit may also be possible.

Other duties include supervising technical staff, overseeing all student design assistants and projects, mentoring student designers, and department and college service. Required Qualifications: M.F.A. or M.F.A./Ph.D., with primary strength in scenic design and secondary abilities in lighting, digital, media and/or projection design. Minimum of three years of professional design experience, and evidence of continuing creative work commensurate with earning tenure at Davidson College.

Experience teaching at the undergraduate level strongly desired. Preference will be given to designers with a broad understanding of contemporary trends in theatrical design and the history of theatrical design and technology.

The successful candidate will be experienced in successful collaboration and problem-solving, able to work effectively with faculty, production staff, students, and guest artists in the development of artistically and educationally successful shows.

The Lighting Design faculty will be responsible for the training and supervision of student electrical crews as part of the Theater Practice course responsibility. The position will oversee the maintenance, troubleshooting, and organization of the theaters’ control systems, lighting inventory, and light shop.

Faculty will contribute to the administration of the department and production management for relevant areas. The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) seeks a full-time, tenure-track Acting and Movement Faculty to join CCM’s Drama Department.

Duties will include teaching two year-long undergraduate courses in Acting and a variety of Movement courses. Directing as part of the main stage and studio season will be occasionally required.   • No.  I wouldn't draw any such conclusions.  I've certainly seen other departments conduct more than one search at the same time.  It may be because funding finally came through after a long freeze, or there were several retirements at once, or a change in admin more receptive to the arts-- there are a variety of reasons why a department might conduct concurrent searches.  The staggered dates are also not unusual-- they give the likely overlapping committees space to go through one set of applications before being inundated with the next.

A knowledge of performance history in a language other than English would be an asset.

Candidates should have the ability to teach a broad range of courses in an undergraduate theatre curriculum, including Western and post-colonial theatre histories, and to combine the teaching of theory/history and performance practice at all levels. Theater Technical Director executes and manages all technical requirements for the department’s production operations, including scenery, props, lighting, sound, rigging, and projections, while also working collaboratively with directors, designers, and other members of the department. University of New Haven (CT) - Visiting Assistant Professor & Theater Program Coordinator

The Division of Performing Arts at the University of New Haven invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor position in Theater beginning Fall 2016.

The ideal candidate is a theater generalist with significant directing experience, a strong teaching record, substantial administrative experience, a commitment to collaboration, and an interest in integrating theory and practice. Ability and interest in teaching and developing courses that include special techniques of acting for film, television and multi-platform content a plus.

The candidate will be responsible for teaching a range of courses including Theater for Community Impact, Directing, and Global Theater History. Additionally, this candidate will direct 1-2 productions a year and serve as Program Coordinator, managing areas including the production season, major and curricular activities, budget, and adjunct and production staff hiring.

DISCUSSION / GENERAL QUESTIONS

What is going on this year? I have just read about yet ANOTHER position that has not been filled or is going back to the interview stage after an extensive search process, delaying a hire to the summer or next academic year. For every one of these jobs that are listed here on this Wiki, there are at least 100 candidates - the average is more like 150, from what I am hearing. Yet, out of those applicant pools, search committees and deans can't find one person to make an offer to? And if they don't get their number one choices, they are just chucking in the towel?? 

• I feel ya, it's crazy. Not sure if it's the people on the committee or the powers above them but it's absurd to think that they can't find a qualified candidate when there's an average of 150-200 apps per position (not including tech/design or in my experience, musical theatre, those are much smaller pools/I think voice is as well but I'm not sure.) I was once on a search committee at an ok/decent, flyover country school trying to fill a musical theatre position and out of the 36 apps we got, less then 10 were even viable and out of those only a few were competitive. In the end 1 of the 3 candidates interviewed was a total dud with the personaity of a piece of toast who asked about the policy on dating students. And no, it wasn't a last minute thing, it was a TT advertised well in advance. It was a few years back and maybe the pool has gotten bigger since then but when it comes to generalist and acting/directing positions the competition is staggering.

Has anyone heard anything from Central Florida, New Mexico, St Mary's of MN or Pine Manor in MA? Central Florida seems like a faux search with an internal candidate but I could be mistaken. I just wish they'd send out rejections already if that's the case.
