Arizona State University (AZ) - TT Assistant Professor of Theatre, Dramaturgy -  CAMPUS INTERVIEW STAGE[]

The School of Film, Dance and Theatre in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure track, Assistant Professor of Theatre, Dramaturgy, beginning fall, 2018. 

We seek a theatre scholar with experience as a dramaturge working on projects that clearly resonate with culturally specific communities and voices in content and form. We are interested in a scholar excited to advance existing Theatre Program curricula in Performance in the Borderlands, Theatre for Social Change, and Theatre for Youth, including dramatic analysis and theatre history, as well as develop new courses in culturally specific theatre and performance that connect with dance and film. This hire will be responsible for fostering undergraduate students and mentoring graduate students with the opportunity to contribute visionary thinking to campus initiatives and community partnerships. Sample areas of desired specialization: Latinx theatre; Native American performance; African-American theatre; Asian American/Pacific Islander theatre; LGBTIQ theatre; hip hop theatre; Immigrant communities and public performance; emerging voices and new storytelling forms; devised, non-linear and community based structural forms that are immersive.

The Assistant Professor of Theatre, Dramaturgy will be responsible for teaching, educating, mentoring and preparing students while advancing the mission of the Theatre Program within the School of Film, Dance and Theatre to increase and diversify numbers of first generation graduates prepared to transform their fields and society.

The candidate will be expected to facilitate student success through active mentorship and innovative new learning experiences that prioritize access, inclusion, diversity and excellence in alignment with ASU and its charter. Our faculty is comprised of theatre artists, practitioners and scholars committed to delivering a curriculum which highly values theatre that address social and political issues, including issues of race and gender, and places emphasis on emerging voices and the creation of new work. We are in the process of revising our curriculum, diversifying our faculty, and asking ourselves what defines a New American Theatre as part of the New American University. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Record of publication in the intersectionality of dramaturgy and film/dance;

Baldwin Wallace University (OH) - TT Assistant Professor of Theatre - Lighting Design[]

The Department of Theatre and Dance at Baldwin Wallace University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor faculty position in Lighting, beginning August 2018. Barnard College (NY) - TT Assistant Professor of Theatre: Race and Performance - OFFER MADE[]

The Department of Theatre at Barnard College invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor level in the field of Race and Performance, with demonstrated secondary teaching expertise in one area of theatre practice, preferably directing. California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo (CA) - TT Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts - Acting/Performance[]

THEATRE AND DANCE - Full-time, academic-year, tenure-track, Assistant Professor, acting and performance position in Theatre in the Theatre and Dance Department, College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, to begin September 13, 2018. An MFA in Acting or Performance is required by time of appointment; one to two years of applicable university teaching or professional experiences is highly desirable.

Teaching responsibilities will include: Advanced Acting Studio, Voice and Diction, Acting in Musical Theatre, Introduction to Theatre; other duties may include directing main-stage productions, coaching for main-stage productions, and supervising student projects. Other teaching responsibilities may include courses based upon applicant's ability to demonstrate expertise in other areas, including, but not limited to, interests in Community-Based Theatre, Devised Theatre, Dialects, Acting for the Camera, Clowning, Stage Combat, etc. Specific assignments will depend on department needs.

The typical teaching load is 12 units per quarter, with correspondingly reasonable research/scholarship and service expectations and with a significant reduction in course load in the first one to two years to help establish an active program of research/scholarship/creative activity and professional development. Outcomes assessment and Learn by Doing are important components of the University curriculum. Faculty members are also expected to engage in service and to provide academic and professional advising to students. California State University, Fullerton (CA) - TT Position - Lighting/Projection Design[]

Position The qualified candidate could teach a combination of undergraduate and graduate courses (up to 3 per semester) in Stage Lighting and Projection Design: Fundamentals of Stage Lighting, Advanced Lighting Design, Automated Lighting, Projection Design, Advanced Topics in Theatre Design and Technology, Graduate Seminar in Lighting Design.  The candidate shall work closely with the Staff Master Electrician and full-time faculty in Lighting Design, supervising student designers from conception through realization, mentoring individual student design projects in lighting and projection, maintain currency with emerging developments in lighting and projection technologies.  The successful candidate could design lighting or projections for selected Department productions.

Positive tenure and promotion decisions require the successful candidate to have excellent teaching skills coupled with the ability to serve on both Department and University committees. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute and collaborate regarding Department curriculum, policy and practice, as well as pursue scholarly/creative and service activities outside of the academy.

Qualifications Required

  • Master of Fine Arts degree by the time of appointment, or significant professional experience.
  • Minimum 3 years college or university level teaching experience.
  • Experience creating and managing all aspects of stage lighting for a multiple spaces and genres from small to large-scale productions.
  • Significant professional experience in theatrical lighting design.
  • Experience teaching computer skills as related to best current practices in professional theatre. This includes but is not limited to use of VectorWorks Spotlight, 2D and 3D rendering techniques as well as visualization programs such as Vision and WYSIWYG.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of culturally diverse students, faculty, and staff and ability to collaborate as a member of a team.

  • United Scenic Artists, Local USA 829 affiliation is desirable but not essential.

  • The new search is different, or is it? What you'll notice is that this position, as described above, invites those who are scholars/teachers of history and criticism and who also teach acting and directing/are directors. The new listing at the link above leads with the primary objective of securing a prof of acting and directing. Although if you look further down in the description, it requests many of the same duties/responsibilities as here above. I find all of this readjustment to the shape of their search, at the very least, interesting, but more so, a display of disorganization on the part of the search.
  • This is a professor of practice/clinical professor with a higher teaching load of 4/4. My guess, knowing a little bit about the earlier search (4 finalists had campus interviews; a friend who did not get the job was one a finalists and their rejection said NAU found someone) is: if the person who got the TT job was their current lecturer with the qualifications, they might need to fill that gap. They also had an acting lecturer who was leaving, I believe. I think it is a position related to this search, and my guess is that the TT position was successfully hired and this is filling similar needs.

The Oregon Center for the Arts at Southern Oregon University's Theatre Program is located in Ashland, Oregon. The undergraduate Theater Program of just under 300 students produces 5-6 productions each year as well as student showcases and workshops attended by the public.

The position would require instruction in movement for the actor and physical theatre, as well as basic acting skills. The ideal candidate would be qualified to teach a sequential series of movement courses in our BFA acting training program, with a focus on physical theatre, clowning, and masks. The candidate would also teach multiple sections of Introduction to Acting for theatre students and non-majors and possibly direct program productions (depending on candidate's experience). Secondary topics of instruction could include stage combat, musical theatre dance styles, devised theatre, or improv.

The post is a permanent appointment as Reader/Principal Lecturer, serving as Head of Theatre Practice for a three-year (renewable) term upon taking the position.

As Head of Theatre Practice, you will maintain oversight of the BATP programme, working with the Deanery and colleagues across the School under the guidance of the Learning, Teaching and Student Experience plan. You will also ensure alignment with best industry and academic standards of practice and determine how best to fit the changing needs and expectations of the cultural industries in developing graduates in the technical arts, design, crafts and production management. This position is for someone with expertise in contemporary dramatic literature and theatre practice, ideally including Canadian and Indigenous drama. The person hired into this position also has a crucial role to play as occasional Artistic Director of the Black Hole Theatre Company, the performance branch of the Theatre program. The program has strong ties to the Winnipeg theatre community (Fringe Festival, Prairie Theatre Exchange company) and links with centres on campus (Centre for Creative Writing and Oral Culture; Institute for the Humanities; Arts Media Lab).   • I couldn't agree more about the syllabus.  Asking for such a thing at the beginning stages of an application was pretty absurd and the directions were incredibly unclear.  ALSO - the fact that it took them three days before they requested skype interviews makes me seriously doubt they even read poeple's applications - clearly they either had people in mind already or made decisions based on very obvious markers like ivy league degrees
  • [for the search committee from a potential candidate]: After spending a few late nights starting to put together a 2-semester syllabus for this application, I decided not to apply.  I have a PhD from an RI well known for performance studies, a strong publication record, an impressive teaching dossier, and my specializations fit the ad description.  In other words, had I completed the task, I would not have been surprised to have been granted an interview. But I decided that if a dept. was asking for such a thing now, it indicates that their expectations are not reasonable and I would only get burned later. A description of courses you would teach is acceptable; sample syllabi of courses taught is also acceptable. Asking a candidate who is obviously also applying to other jobs and likely also has one currently to create 2 syllabi from scratch is perhaps the most bizarre thing I have ever encountered on the market.

The program provides students with the knowledge and skills to prepare for a career in the theatre and its related fields through a combination of academic and production experiences.  The Department offers students training in the foundations of the history, theory and craft of theatre and promotes interdisciplinary and innovative connections while holding itself to high artistic standards of production in the context of a Liberal Arts education. University of Chicago (IL) - Collegiate Assistant Professor of Theater & Performance Studies (Postdoc) - CAMPUS VISIT STAGE[]

The Humanities Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago is accepting applications from scholars and practitioners of Theater and Performance Studies for a four-year, non-renewable, postdoctoral teaching appointment as a Harper and Schmidt Fellow who holds the rank of Collegiate Assistant Professor. The Fellow is a member of the College Faculty whose primary responsibility will be to teach theater and performance studies classes in the College's general education (Core) program. An ability to incorporate theater and performance practice into course work is desirable. The position is open to those who will have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. or DFA degree no later than August 31, 2018. Applicants who have completed an MFA and can demonstrate relevant professional experience in addition to their academic training are also welcome to apply. In most years, the Fellow will teach two sections per quarter of Core courses in TAPS, making a total of six per year. Currently, TAPS core courses includeText & Performance (TAPS 103), Acting Fundamentals (TAPS 102) and Drama: Embodiment & Transformation (TAPS 101).  The Fellow also has the opportunity to design an independent course, to be taught usually in the fourth year.

The Fellow will be a member of the Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts (https://societyoffellows.uchicago.edu/). They will be eligible for one quarter of research leave, typically in the third year of residence, and may be eligible to apply for a second research leave in the Spring of the fourth and final year of appointment. The annual salary for 2018-19 will be $69,500 plus health benefits and an annual professional development allowance of $5,000. Other benefits, based on eligibility, include a publication allowance and a childcare allowance. The effective date for this appointment is September 1, 2018.  This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement with SEIU, Local 73.

University of Massachusetts Boston (MA) – Technical Director (Lecturer)[]

The Department of Performing Arts at the University of Massachusetts Boston is seeking a full time, non-tenure track Lecturer to serve as Technical Director (TD) beginning September 1, 2018. The Technical Director will teach one class, three crew laboratories, and five individual practicums per semester in the area of technical production as well as work independently to implement scenery for the theatre season safely and effectively. The TD will serve as the Chief Safety Officer for the Performing Arts Department and ensure the safe working practices of students, faculty, guest artists, and the greater UMass community. Additionally, the successful candidate will be responsible for engineering scenery for all productions to meet the designer's specifications, create CAD or pencil drawings of technical designs, research and order necessary materials, construct, install and strike scenery for departmental productions. The TD will work with department staff on the schedule and organization of theatre productions, monitor the budget for productions and set construction, assist departmental faculty in planning both the production and educational budget as it pertains to materials for technical theatre, and advise department faculty on play season selection.

Requirements: Minimum requirements: Bachelor's of Fine Arts, Master's Degree preferred, in Theatre Technology or a closely related field and a minimum of 3-5 years in technical direction. Ability to teach basic and/or advanced levels of stagecraft is required. Experience with technical or mechanical drawing, both pencil and computer aided design (CAD) drafting is required. Knowledge of scenery construction, including rigging, welding and lighting technology is required. Experience with computer aided design (CAD) drafting is required. Ability to work evenings and/or weekends may be required. Experience in sound design and technology is preferred. Ability to provide leadership in theatre technology to departmental staff; Ability to educate, organize and mobilize students; Ability to train students in technical direction.
