Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be expected to teach Hispanic linguistics and translation / interpreting courses; demonstrate willingness to explore the development of interdisciplinary programs, create appropriate new courses, establish strong ties with the local community, and contribute to and participate in the life and the development of the department. The standard teaching load is 12 units per semester; the first two years the load is 9 units per semester, and reassigned time may be available for research and/or curriculum and pedagogical development. All faculty members are expected to engage in scholarship and community service and to remain current in their field. In addition, they are expected to serve on departmental, college, and/or university committees and to participate in other service, as needed. The HKBU Translation Programme was established in 1990, and from 1 September 2019 will become the Department of Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies, having been awarded full independent departmental status.
The Department offers programmes at BA, MA and Research Postgraduate levels, and is among the most internationalized such departments in the region, with an academic staff that comprises members from Hong Kong, Mainland, Taiwan, Spain, the UK and Australia. The Department has particular strengths in literary translation, minority cultures in translation, and interpreting, and is also seeking to expand its profile in the field of translation technology.
Associate Professor / Assistant Professor in Translation or Interpreting (Tenure-track) (PR0027/19-20)
The Department is now seeking applicants for the above position. Applicants from all areas of the discipline will be considered. Preference will be given to those with expertise in one of the following clusters: (i) translation technology, translation-related applications of big data, and localization; (ii) interpreting studies; and (iii) minority translation studies. The ability to teach related linguistics courses will be considered an advantage. Given the Chinese/English orientation of the majority of the Department’s course offerings, a command of Chinese is expected.
The appointees will undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and will be expected to play an active role in research and publication. They will also be responsible for supervision of undergraduate honours projects and postgraduate dissertations at the Master’s and Doctoral level. The appointees are also expected to take on administrative duties.
Applicants should possess a PhD in Translation, Interpreting, Intercultural Studies or other relevant fields; have an appropriate research and publication record and teaching experience at the tertiary level.
Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract of three years commencing January 2020 or as soon thereafter as practicable. Re-appointment thereafter will be subject to mutual agreement and availability of funding.
Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

We are seeking an academic with an excellent PhD and a track record in research, who can represent the subject in both research and teaching (in the B.A. study programme Sprache, Kultur, Translation and in the M.A. study programmes Translation and Konferenzdolmetschen). Applicants will have a main interest in Anglophone cultures and language varieties outside Great Britain, Ireland, the USA and Canada, although the focus of their work can lie either in linguistics or in cultural studies. In either case, research and teaching are expected to address questions pertaining to Translation Studies. The new professor will participate actively in interdisciplinary collaborative projects and show a commitment to external grant capture, contribute to the Faculty’s continuing internationalisation strategy, and be willing to take responsibility for academic administrative tasks. Ability to successfully teach Spanish to English and English to Spanish translation and interpreting courses at all levels of undergraduate instruction. Demonstrated scholarship or research achievement. Responsibilities will include working collaboratively with colleagues, the department, and the College. The successful candidate may also be expected to teach Spanish language courses at all levels of instruction. Teaching, service and publication are required. Teaching duties include a 3/3 course load (six courses per year) of undergraduate courses, but beginning tenure-track appointments receive a significant course reduction while working toward tenure. You will have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with staff and students alongside an ability to design and deliver course materials and to assess them appropriately.

The post holder will develop and lead a research group in translation technologies, driving research in CTS in this area and making a significant contribution to achieving the strategic goals of CTS’s expanding research programme. The School of Modern Languages and Cultures seeks to appoint an outstanding candidate to a twelve-month fixed term full-time Teaching Fellowship in Translation Studies and French. The appointment is tenable from 1 September 2019. The successful candidate will be expected to provide excellent teaching and carry out service to the School. We welcome applications from exceptional teachers with an ability to teach technology-based translation (including CAT, post-editing MT, project management software, and corpora) to MA students in Translation Studies, and to contribute to the teaching of translation into and/or out of French to MA students and to undergraduates studying for the BA in Modern Languages and Cultures and associated programmes.
The post is to provide temporary replacement following a recent retirement. The post will commence on 1 September 2019 and will end on 31 August 2020; it is not anticipated that the post will be extended beyond this fixed term.

The School of Modern Languages at the University of Bristol is seeking to appoint a Research Associate with expertise in translation technology. The researcher will contribute to the project ‘Improving Products and Processes in Translation Technology Use’ (IMPETUS), funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (UK). The project will build a body of empirical evidence on several aspects of professional translation practice. It will explore topics including use of neural machine translation and longitudinal perceptions of translating productivity. The job will involve conducting workplace experiments, analysing data, writing research papers and giving conference presentations under the direction of Dr Lucas Nunes Vieira (PI) and in collaboration with Professor Michael Carl (Kent State University, USA), Dr Elisa Alonso (Universidad Pablo de Olavide, Spain) and industry partners. The post will also encompass research impact duties including participation in industry events and collaboration with translation companies.
The following skills and qualifications are essential for the role:
A PhD, or equivalent qualification/experience, in translation studies, natural language processing or a related field Experience with methods of data collection and analysis used in translation process research, user studies and/or machine translation evaluation Fluent English, both spoken and written Well-developed analytical skills Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, including academic researchers, professional translators and industry partners Ability to use initiative, and apply creativity, to solve problems that are encountered in the research context Ability to organise their own time and work, to meet deadlines, and manage competing priorities Organisational and planning skills Excellent team-worker Ability to work independently The following is highly desirable:
Experience with the computer-assisted translation tool Trados Studio Experience with eye trackers Experience with the statistical package R Knowledge of one or more languages out of Chinese, German, Hindi, Russian or Spanish A track record of high-quality peer-reviewed publications The start date is 1 September 2019 and the position has funding for 1.5 years in the first instance.
